  • After an INSANE Grand Prix season the 2019 final did not disappoint. Nathan Chen, Alena Kostornaia, Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron and Sui Wenjing & Han Cong are your champions. That and Alexandra Trusova dressed up her chihuahua in a Game of Thrones costume. Can't miss.

    I completely agree with Dylan on this. After his long program, Nathan looks as if it's no big deal and he swaggers off the ice. Yuzu and Vincent Zhou and Shoma Uno all have a rag doll as if they've been rode hard and put away wet. Nathan has incredible stamina.

    I love watching so many new young talents performing amazing programs and tough jumps challenging eachother. But I personally would like to watch Yuzuru Hanyu's "sloppy"/"noodle body" performances. Because being a non figure skating fan few months back, I used to just randomly watch these famous figure skaters routine and used to close the tab after 1-2 minutes because they were not able to hold my curiosity. Only this guy , Yuzuru Hanyu made me watch his programs back to 2009-2008... Eva Yuzuru has never used his asthma as an excuse and he’s been skating for 21 years. He was tired, because he did two extremelly difficult jumps he had never done together in a program, then had to still skate 3 minutes of the most difficult men program this season. His asthma has nothing to do with it.

    • @melody3239
      @melody3239 4 года назад +18

      I think another factor is how much content there is in Yuzuru's free skate vs Nathan's. There's a lot more choreography, difficult transitions, etc throughout the entire program, versus Nathan's free skate which is relatively empty and has longer set ups for jumps. It would also explain Nathan's consistency with landing his jumps (which is impressive!). But it does make it easier for Nathan because of his programs.

      Why are you surprised? He has so many transitions and actual skating in his program that he will be a lot more tired than other skaters who do not have as complex program components involved. Moreover, this FS program was designed as a four quad program. He never had to up his tech to five quads until he messed up the SP and then decided to throw caution to the wind and just do five quads in order to try to max his BV. Essentially, he YOLOed this free skate and no other skater as far as I know would have had the balls to do a program they really didn't practice much at a Grand Prix Final of all places.

      @Tommy80 When we say the best ever, we are surpassing scoring systems and records and time. It's not something you can measure, as all those things change and evolve. "Best ever"s are a subjective measure for outside of the sport, a colloquialism. And it's becoming so well used as to lose meaning.
      And this applies to Nathan as well as any skater. This is the current highest score. Was it the best skating ever? Was it even the best that Nathan as ever skated? Ever? By your reasoning, yes, by mine, not necessarily. And here lies my complaint.

    Hanyu has always had a slack body posture and lifeless, hanging "noodle" arms in his programs. He hangs his head and looks down at the ice, not the audience, much of the time, too. He does this at the beginning of his programs before he's spent any energy, but it gets worse when he's tired. I've heard judges rightly criticize his poor posture, but it never seems to show in his PCS. Nathan and Uno are good examples of how every part of their body is energized, right down to their fingertips. Every arm movement has energy and intention. For the best posture, look no further than Paul Wylie or Denis Ten. Hanyu just looks like a rag doll out there most of the time.

    So Nathan Chen's PCS was higher than *Patrick Chan's highest PCS* - and that's just 'subjective'? EDIT: my mistake, I thought his score at GPF was 97 but it's actually 95, which is still way too high imo when you look at the other men who have achieved similar scores. But Chiddy's highest is a 97, so I was wrong. Apologies!

    • @Rachel-rs7jn
      @Rachel-rs7jn 4 года назад +2

      @@Rachel-rs7jn Patrick Chan's highest is over 97 and Samarin's PCS in his highest scoring free skate is less than 90. Components are judged out of 10 so there should be no year on year inflation the way there is with the technical score. @mish098aimer That's actually exactly my point. The original commenter was trying to argue that Nathan Chen's PCS is too high because it's higher than Patrick Chan's best. But, we can't use old PCS as a basis for comparison since Patrick Chan doesn't even make the top 10 list while Samarin does - that shows just how much the PCS have been elevated over the past few years. So now all we can do is compare to each other on the day and not really think about the actual number. Yes I wish it weren't that way. But unfortunately I don't see it changing any time soon. I agree that Nathan Chen's actual number was too high at GPF, but then in that case (IMO) so was Yuzu's because he did not have his usual magic. But then everyone's would have to be lower and they won't start suddenly doing that. :/

    I am not disagreeing Chen's victory, as Hanyu made errors and Chen did not. I am criticizing an unbelievable level of high score Chen received. Hanyu should have received more PCS scores, or Check's PCS scores should have been more realistic. (Believe it or not, I like Chen next to Hanyu.) I just wanted any sports to be played and judged fairly, so that we can enjoy sports more. Also, fairness would give players more motivation to work harder, and, consequently, they will enjoy their victories more. First off: I LOVE seeing such passionate commentary about figure skating from fans. It is important and healthy for people to have differing opinions. This is a key factor in what makes skating skating. It’s subjective and that is one of the things that makes it so special and unique.
    I am not biased towards Nathan or against Yuzu. I say it as I see it. I have been out there and lived that life and have the utmost respect for everyone who makes it to this level and puts themselves out there. These are some of my opinions based on my understanding of skating after competing for 28 years. I used to train with Yuzu and have nothing but respect for him. He is a legend and in no way slowing down.
    In the heat of competition, moments are created and they leave you with a feeling. Nathan’s skate was something very special. Not just for his technical content but for his confidence, quality and sureness of execution. This in no way takes away from what an amazing skate Yuzu had. But based on those two performances, Nathan’s skate was stronger. Yes it was a wide margin. And yes Yuzu had mistakes. I in no way think that it’ll be a blowout if both skate perfectly. We are looking at a continued evolution in the sport and that is going to cause controversy.
    You can agree, or disagree, with our opinions. We are two people who lived our lives in the sport and are trying to share some insights while entertaining audiences. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Your opinions matter to us and we look forward to enjoying more skating with you as the season continues.

      Dylan Moscovitch Can’t agree with you more and thanks for sharing your candid insight out of your own professional experience. While creating the hype of rivalry between Yuzuru and Nathan benefits the figure skating industry and a lot of stakeholders, I disagree with the note some have put out with - that both are equally great. The fact is, they are not equal for the time we are in. Nathan is way better, a class of his own and no one is even getting close. A point difference of 1 to 5 might suggest equal rivalry. But we are talking about almost 44 points. And even back in March World Championship, It was already a whopping 23 points. So my point is, with all my respect to Yuzuru who was the greatest for his time, in today’s men’s single skating world, there is no real equal rivalry existing. Nathan dominates so much in every way that in reality it is Nathan and everyone else. Nathan doesn’t need to be recognized as anyone’s rivalry to stand out in lime light. His performance speaks for itself (and what a performance considering he didn’t even seem to sweat over it, and he did it part time amid his full time Yale study)! In addition, His humbleness and kindness despite the huge achievement shines even brighter as a great human being and role model!

      I don´t think anyone disagrees with Nathan winning. We are just saying that his scores were massively inflated. Nathan is a great skater and amazing at jumping. However, I can´t see him ever being even close to the level of adoration that Yuzu has. It´s simply because Yuzu has that je ne sais qua, the it factor that just makes you completely mesmerized when he skates. He is from another planet. Nathan is just a really good skater. I agree with what Tatiana Tarasova said during the broadcast: Nathan is amazing but Yuzuru is a gift from God himself. I could not agree more. Plushenko was similar, there have been a lot of really good skaters in Russia but there is only one Evgeni Plushenko. He is loved because he can make people feel when he skates, even those who don´t usually watch the sport.

    The commentary is quite funny must it must also be acurate. It was not Hanyu’s first quad lutz landed in competition. Chen’s program is NOT the best program of all time of Men (are you seriously out of your mind?!?!? Has anybody even watched it more than once?!?!) Hanyu has a completely different body structure than Chen, plus the most complex/difficult program in Men, plus he, against all advice, always gives his all: he doesn’t do “saving energy”. All of that, combined with a program he had never skated before is like... watching the theoretically impossible happen right before your eyes.
    As for Chen, yes, this was just another clean runthrough, but with a worse costume. lol Just wear your practice clothes, Nate.
    Finally, just a note to complain about the outrageous and shameful attribution of scores to Nathan. He won because he deserved to win. He doesn’t need his fed to buy him scores. The US fed is bringing shame and disrepute to all their athletes with this behaviour.

    “Yuzuru Hanyu is the greatest skater (or the best skaters) in history”. This is actually said by more than a few top foreign figure skating commentators in the world in the past. This year, “Euro Sports" figure skating competitions seem to have been blocked, so, we can no longer watch, read, and/or hear their comments over an internet. However, up to the last year, most major figure skating competitions' comments by leading European commentators were translated, at least, into Japanese, and some of those commentators did say “Hanyu is the greatest skater in history.” If it was expressed as “one of the greatest figure skaters in history”, then it was said by even more commentators. It is notorious that American judges often give questionable high scores to American skaters. In some cases, these undeserved scores were so high, many people, including some foreign commentators, couldn’t figure out why. In my opinion, America’s Skating Union wants to create American super stars to obtain more figure fans and audiences. Of course, American super stars must hold the world records, so American judges give “very high” scores to their skaters. ISU appears to pretend as if they knew nothing, maybe because a certain American TV station is a big money source to ISU. Don’t American judges realize that what they do is actually an insult to American figure skaters? I think that American skaters work so hard to win fairly based on their own performances, and not by obvious unfair favoritism.

      @@kristenjames318 They state that Nathan's performance is the greatest of the history of the men's event...a bold claim which has never been given to anyone else since everyone has their personal opinions whenever anyone tried to bestow that title on any performance before. Not sure why it's ok to hand it out so freely now...?
      They mention Nathan's skating skills have been undervalued when in fact, that mark, was the one most skating fans all agreed (whether you like Nathan or not) that was incredibly inflated for the GPF... They say that this was Yuzuru's first Quad Lutz in competition when it is his second, his first was COR 2017. They say that Yuzuru missed one jump when he actually missed three, almost four (the combo in the short with the triple toe, the two triple axels in the long, and the under-rotated triple flip in the long)...all of those would have accounted for at least 30 points, give or take a couple more, and boosted his PCS and GOE...thereby making the two on par.
      This perception of one annihilating the other seems very biased if they haven't even mentioned that fact to viewers. The difference between the two men being tired is based on age, stamina, physical attributes (asthma) and comfort (Nathan having done a 5 Quad program before while Yuzuru has not). The floppy and sloppy comment is unnecessary since we can list so many other people who have other ways of showing fatigue or even poor technique (such as Nathan's stiff knees on landings). The difference in energy is also a factor based on what is being done in the programs...transitions and deep edges contribute to tiredness...which Yuzuru showcased.
      Quite amazing to see the two men go "toe to toe" except...they didn't, one had a great day and the other did not...it would be more accurate to say "toe to toe" when both have skated their best and cleanest.

      @L.S. Thank you. I think people don't know that Hanyu had to rearrange his FS program essentially overnight to fit in five quads and the fact he trusted himself and his body to deliver that kind of performance at the Grand Prix Final without having practiced it before is gutsy as all hell. Leave it to Hanyu, who has to challenge everything, to pull a skate like that without preparation. He truly is a legend.

    Yuzu missed 2 jumps, his last jump was supposed to be a 3A+3A sequence...20 points. Missed combo in short ..15 pts, plus under rotated Flip-5 pts. So yes, point differential is accurate. Yuzu was gassed after the last quad, he PCS was hurt because he was not trained for a 5 quad program. He basically stopped skating last minute of program. So his PCS suffered. When you give Trusova/Samarin like skaters 7-8 on PCS , they have no choice but give Nathan types 9-9.5. If they judged fairly, Yuzu 9-9.5, Nathan 8-8.5 and other men 6&7s. But since everyone starts at 7.5, there is no choice but put Nathan in 9-9.5 range. Johnny Weir said it best, Trusova is an acrobat doing tough tricks with nothing in between, her PCS should be 5 to 6, IMO.

    The French are great but they turn me off with the music and the sameness of their free skates. I was really surprised when they picked the retro outfit and music but then we get to the free skate and all the excitement leaves my body.

    It used to think of America as an egalitarian country, but now it's disappointed. Enjoying the care of the ISU, the protection of the judges, and being so proud ?!This is the Christian spirit? The American spirit?
