- Award winning Israeli journalist Gideon Levy writes and tells stories that many in Israel do not want to hear and see. The award winning Haaretz-journalist is one of few Israeli journalists that sheds a critical light over the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and blockade and repeating invasions of Gaza. Gideon Levy gave this talk at Under Reported Reality in 2022. The seminar is a part of Transform - Trondheim World Festival.

This conflict has changed me as a person with the help of people like him, from what I watch to what I read. I was already moving away from the Democratic Party since 2012 but finally completely cut all ties, though can’t vote Republican either. Taking a red pill is painful and makes you feel like a total idiot for what you believed in and somewhat of a lonely experience, but it’s never late to help make a better world with the truth.

From a culture who gave us this precedent for the moral society (prophets who call out the complacent & corrupt) - & trades on it when in its interests - Gideon reminds us what can happen when mirrors themselves are covered or only flattering ones allowed. The process one goes through to see an image in the mirror that flies in the face of their previous idea of that image is always uncomfortable and jarring. It's also the most necessary process for humans to go through if they want to become truly empowered. Saying as though certainty is the most cherished value for most, we'll choose to ignore the truth in favor of convenience. We don't want our identities to crumble. But what if that identity was based on a lie? Guys like Gideon are proof positive that reconstituting our identities can result in an empowered clarity. Armed with that clarity, we can lay the cycle of lies/distortions to bed. Doing so is not only good for the individual, but everyone they touch moving forward.

If it is possible for Gideon Levy to have his mind transformed and his eyes opened then it is equally possible for other Israelis to do the same - but they choose not to. If it is possible for some young people to refuse military service then it is also possible for others - but they choose not to. We live in hope but their high opinion of themselves is so deeply entrenched that it will take something radical to effect change.
