Witnessed original Marillion 7 times back in the day. And then witnessed Fish more than that but……. And this song here is one that Fish’s band could NEVER replicate. Only the lads from Marillion can do this number. Don’t know what it is but Rothery, Kelly, Mosley and Trewavas make this sound night & day better than Fish’s musicians. Doesnt really happen with other songs like Heart of Lothian etc etc…… Incubus can only ever be original Marillion.
I know Mr Rothery would approve of the guitar solo it's one of his personal favourites I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen this when Fish was in his prime the story before the song it was a magical time and forever changed my life Fish a lyricist a poet an icon a revolutionary
I first saw fish on the misplaced childhood tour and to me he will always be the singer I remember at 15 whose music and lyrics spoke to me in a way which is still with me now many years down the road. Yes, his voice is shot (never understood why singers smoke?) and the performance is nothing as it was but the new songs are fantastic and suit who he is now. I for one am looking forward to the final album and final tour and I will buy his first book if indeed a book it is as his first project.
I have been a fish follower since the early 80's and as All artists Age....Things change...From Vocals to intensity levels in Shows..Live or Studio....The Misplaced Childhood Album will always be Number #1....and All Songs ....and his Music will effect me in different ways depending on the mood i am in But Its all Good when im in a HEMP STATE OF MIND... :-)
With all due appreciation for Fish's issues related to his vocal cords and such, he is clearly well past prime. The band sounds better than his previous band that always sounded too much like a Marillion cover band. I can definitely tell Fish is not giving it his all, as he's not physically able to do so. All the vocals stop short of the intensity that made him who he is. Whenever I see a current clip or hear audio from a current show, I find myself dipping into his back catalogue to cleanse my palate.
Chris Wilkinson Yes, agreed, Fish is still quite an impressive artist. His newer material is easier for me to enjoy given I don't have a past example of how powerful it can be. I don't mean to be disrespectful to Fish by the way. I feel for the man. I bet he's really frustrated that his voice has given way, thus his decision to retire in two years.
Michael Hull Yea I mean your comments are perfectly valid. Will miss his shows though. Saw the return to childhood show, something that I would never would have thought to have seen in its entirety live.
Chris Wilkinson I first saw Fish in 1987 supporting Clutching at Straws. Wow, there was more or less a religious experience for me. I also saw Fish supporting Sunsets on Empire. That too bordered on a religious experience for me. What an amazing man. I am very saddened to see how things developed for him over the years. Still, my Fish recordings will continue to see a lot of active listening into the future.
Michael Hull yea sunsets was the first time I saw him. Gonna try to get to the Bilston show as maybe one of the last chances. Will drag me mum with me as she always been a fan but never seen him.

Vocals? Unrecognisable from the days gone by, you can’t recreate greatness not with the vocals or the guitar.

Whilst I agree he certainly doesnt have the range he used to have, live he is still outstanding. His latest album in my opinion is one of his best.
