Let's just be absolutely clear on this: Connor's reason for struggling is 100% his basic level of Japanese. It is obvious to everyone that he has both the confidence, the ability to enliven a character and the ability to perform, in voice acting, if only he knew the language better. I mean, the tone of that man's voice is maaade for VA work. So deep and smooth, wow.
It's like the video of that homeless guy that was so good as a radio announcer, he was instantly given a job and is doing really well now. Not that Connor looks like a homeless person... well, actually...

That part stood out to me too! Being overly positive or not upfront is part of Japanese culture and her saying that is refreshing to me. Makes me wonder how Japanese people think of their own culture and if they wanted to change in any way.

@@Woodsaras Yeah, you just can't compare the effort Japanese people put into voice acting compared to voice actors in many other countries. There certainly are voice actors on the same level elsewhere, but they are rare.
I don't think faking a laugh is that hard, I can do it in many ways as well. It just feels natural to me, even if I fake it.

In summary, if you want to become a voice actor in japan:
- Learn the basics of voice acting
- know your strengths and weaknesses
- have balls of steel
- know how to take criticism
- very FLUENT in japanese
- put in the work, prepare and practice
- Never give up and keep trying
In other words, when you take this job you really have to make sure you know what you are doing and your goal. I'm sure there is a lot more but I'm going to have to give that to the comments.

I mean we've always known the voice acting scene in Japan is BRUTAL, but seeing it this up and close..... a SHEESH and a YIKES dude!! They're all SO good! Yet 90-95% of them go underappreciated, but only because the remaining 5-10% are just THAT MUCH better!! So crazy o_o
Then sometimes even the 5-10% are struggling getting big offers because most of the older popular ones are getting those offers. Well unless if they are just better then they'll be selected over those.

Can we appreciate that Connor dove into learning voice acting in a language he's not fluent in? He did so well, and I love that he will always been willing to embarrass himself just to show up something really cool in Japan.
He's just doing it for the clicks and most his content is always "Fixing Voice Acting" crap, like dude your not so good that you can make things better. If he was just a fun go getter that didn't take himself seriously I'd like him more but I feel like he actually thinks he's better than most voice actors and that's just really pretentious.
Edit: Sorry if I rubbed some of you the wrong way, I'm in the minority and just have felt annoyed by his videos for the longest time. Critsim is fine, but "fixing" is just really pretentious.

Episode 1 of “That time I got reincarnated as a Voice Actor in Nippon” was fantastic! It’s great to see this type of content. I fee like a surprising amount of people have a deeper connection to voice acting than they realize. That little segment explaining why VA’s are so iconic in Japan really made me understand that a bit better.

51:38 I remember couple of Polish voice actors talking about how "back in the analog days" they had to be all there together in the booth, and that really allowed everything to feel much more natural. And now, when they record separately often times there's something slightly unnatural (that listener can pick up on) just because you're not actually talking with another person.
"Back in the analog days" it was also extremely rare to have fully dubbed shows in Poland. Movies, rarely, at least for kids (say - Disney movies or Hannah Barbara shows). Regular movies, anime shows? One guy voicing it. And I think the most "prolific" voice actor who voiced like most of 80-90s shows has passed away recently, so it's kind of an end of an era...
Mad respect to Connor for this holy shit. He's what? two years into learning Japanese (his third language?) and is really putting in effort to voice act on a professional level in front of native speakers and aspiring seiyu. And later voice acting along side a professional seiyu to the script of an anime. Great Job my guy!
The second language is the hardest one
@@Zyzzkxx Tbf his first two languages were Welsh and English which he picked up from a young age. Japanese though is not as easy to pick up especially when youre an adult.

Well if you learned your 2nd or 3rd language in a young age its very easy... But your 3rd or 4th language its hard because you either couldn't put time and energy to it

7:37 it might seem too simple, but this is honestly a really good advice. "If you fail, just keep smiling", it's something that a lot of people should do more. (not the failing part lol, but the smiling one)
Well failing is generally a natural part of the learning process when it comes to many things, so failure isn't necessarily a bad thing in most cases, so long as you're making a genuine effort to learn from it and improve.
sometimes you have to fail to learn, cause you be cant perfect right at the start, learning is a lifelong process its a cycle of failure and success.
true failure is only when you give up without even trying or doing your best at it.
I wish I had a teacher like Shirakawa-san, the way he instructed Connor and the class was simply mind-blowing. Not only he adapted extremely well to having a foreigner who barely speaks japanese, he was also considerate, professional and incredibly helpful in general. Just look at the gestures he makes with his hands all the time, so that he can convey his words better. Very cool video, props to everyone who made it possible.

I would like to give a credit to Connor' japanese. He often says that his japanese is terrible but he is very confident while using it. He can easelly interact with native speaker and most important he is not afraid to make a mistake. Most common problem of people who learn new language is being afraid of making a mistake. Good job!

Tbh he is neither confident nor good, but he’s got the spirit. I appreciate his willingness to fight through discomfort, he puts himself in extremely difficult snd uncomfortable situations.
Obviously he doesn’t really have time so I can’t put it against him, but his Japanese is definitely not good, he can barely put a sentence together, barely conversational, and seems well aware of the fact.
We should definitely encourage his trying, but lets not lie to ourselves and him. He isn’t good.

@Jordan Conner no man it’s just as bad as any beginner. You can get to his level in a month or two most likely with moderate immersion (watching movies/shows, youtube videos, anime without subs, generally content for real Japanese people)
@@eresoup7229 i would argue that his Japanese is actually pretty good. Certainly not great, but it seems that he can get the message across using what he is got which is evidence of him having decent pronunciation and a somewhat decent vocabulary.

The voice teacher seemed like the nicest person ever and so helpful. He wanted you to learn and grow, without making you feel like you can't do it.

Sorry to be a prick but voice teachers have to act like that. It is their job to do all kinds of things so their clients will improve and avoid things that would stunt their growth, or else their clients would give them bad reviews, damaging their reputation and thus kicking them out of business.
I just wish all businesses actually care like them since there are some businesses who do not care about their clients because they know it will not put them out of business.

Bruh you guys are so damn ingrate he's been making content like crazy from the past 2021 to now posting long well edit videos every week on his main channel he has a second channel, trash taste, a lot of collabs, voice acting and streaming almost every day this man works really hard, he said he would take a break from youtube only during this month of january 2021 and instead he said he would try to stream every day... be patient he needs a break every now and then.
Man, Connor. You're crazy ambitious to have attempted this. Props. There's a base-level concept being proven in this showcase of what it takes to be a voice actor (or really, to achieve any endeavor): talent is not enough, you gotta put in the time to learn and practice. I like that Japanese culture has a baked-in expectation for every individual to keep learning, no matter how proficient they've become - when everyone is a student, then everyone is unified in their purpose, moving in the same direction despite any disparity in their present levels of ability.

Yes and the same principles apply for many other occupations, example musicians. You can’t get good from talent alone, it takes hours of practice and true dedication.

You're free of restrictions but at the same time people can be rude or even a jerk and no one can complain about it.
If you ever try to be rude to others in Japan, people will immediately stay away from you and you'll get secluded almost instantly.

As somebody with huge 'foreign language anxiety' (I literally skipped parts of Connor's Japanese acting because I was so anxious), I give massive props to Connor for not only trying to converse but act in a foreign language he clearly isn't comfortable with. It's really inspiring to see and I hope to become more comfortable in my foreign language use too.

The main difference between English dub and Japanese VA is they VA together and it really shows the difference in line delivery. If English Dub VAs did it in groups, it would sound so much better
If I were take a guess as to why they don’t maybe a money and scheduling problem. English dubbing does not pay very well, so often times vas have an alternative form of income, like a day job. And if their job is mainly voice acting, they may doing multiple gigs at a time. I heard how some vas would have more than two gigs scheduled on the same day. That does not lend itself to group sessions. It would be nice to have if the circumstance allowed it.
Depending on the studio and the people they do groups. Lots of English VAs talk about how at times they just shoot shit with colleagues on mess upa and they get separated if its becoming troublesome lol
Most professionally produced western cartoons were recorded ensemble pre-COVID. Think Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney, even random British or Canadian cartoons. Connor's view is a little out of sync with how things are done overall because he's mainly been an online voice actor hyper fixated on anime. The former already confines you to one on one sessions because there's a good chance you're not recording anywhere close to the rest of the cast. The second is dubbing work, which is done solo because it's easier to match flaps without the distraction of other actors. I'd be curious to know if Japanese dubs of foreign works are recorded with everyone in the same booth or if they also do it solo.

There are a lot fewer professional voice actors in the US, especially ones that do anime dubbing. She's considered quite prolific, but go to MAL and look at her acting credits vs Christopher Sabat for example. American voice actors are BUSY.
You can still tell he's a professional throughout it's just lots of Western Voice acting is actually pretty transient and solitary. I think the best performance comes w multiple actors in one studio reading it like a play but that is logistically difficult. It's how excellent stuff like Batman The Animated Series was
done.
The fact that he managed to survive being trained, it's just giving me chills and cringes trying to feel what the mood is in the room, when everyone's voice acting in a different language from yours, and that you don't even exactly know all of the language yet. It's like getting put in an art class without even knowing how to draw a proper circle, or maybe even a stickman.

@@DarkG7X You don't learn a language by simply moving to a new country. Take a look at Gigguk or Sydney, their fluency in japanese is still non-existent. Connor has definitely put in some effort on his own.

@Richard H Yea his reading was quite impressive, especially as it’s blind. Blind reading sucks because you sound incredibly stupid (as he did) and it requires actually reading each character, which you don’t normally do especially in Japanese that has kanji precisely because Kana are super bulky

I tried Japanese voice acting before and it was really hard because they speak fast when they're speaking normally so I can relate to Connor's struggle in this video this really gave me the courage to keep trying

Your teacher had such a smooth and calming voice, everyone was very considerate and polite given you're not fluent in Japanese
I would pay for a tape of that man saying nice, gentle things in the face of my failures, and twisting them into positives.
He seems like such a genuinely nice and really caring guy (which you can also tell by his attitude of showing up as his best professional self for his students, + the "you learn so much from your students" bit) that from him it feels more legitimately encouraging than insincere (which is more like what comments like that can sometimes feel like, in situations like this one).
I think his experience as a VA actually might have hurt him in some ways when reading in japanese. He have previously said that part of VA is being able to read scripts very fast and predict the words and this makes it so that he will read out the characters as soon as his brain processes what each individual character means but he have no idea what word that character is part of so his words comes out a bit odd at times.
Japanese VAs tend to get their scripts a few days in advance though, like what Joey got when he got chosen to voice act a game. So technically Connor should be able to get used to the Japanese dialogue days in advance before the recording if he was ever chosen to VA there.

The Japanese VA business is so difficult that most Japanese people can't even pronounce Japanese words well enough to be qualified for the job which is why they have so many schools for it. Trashtaste went in depth on the topic when they had the Japanese VA as a guest.
His only chance would be to land a role of a transfer student who is supposed to have a heavy accent.
@@sebastian-ny1sp True, and honestly, it'd be nice if he did considering the number of anime where the transfer student is actual just a Japanese seiyuu faking a foreign-accented Japanese, or even worse, speaking English. Although nowadays they're improving on being able to speak at least some English with a good enough accent.

Damn! Japanese voice acting school is S tier! So much thoroughness in teaching it. Talk about dedication to the art. I like how they do the tongue twisters. I figure they do them since a lot of the voice acting in the anime is a long stream of lines and you can't make any mispronounciations or stuttering.
I really like how in Connors's videos all interviews are him speaking in English and they answering casually in their language. It makes me forget that they are actually talking in Japanese. You are doing a great job with the videos

That teacher was quite good at his job. He knows how to deal with students who struggle the most and give them a space to catch up and not fall behind.
I respect these people to death but one thing to be said is that if any of those top VAs had to go in an American studio they would struggle just as much. "wait I'm alone in the booth?" Language, local costumes and culture would be such a huge barrier to overcome.
Add to the fact they have to match the tone of someone else for a scene made to suit someone else and match the visual cadence of a scene meant for someone else and it’s little wonder why dubbing us a bit hard
I think they are well aware of that fact. I feel like they have so much respect for Connor getting out of his comfort zone to do this.
