I do not miss my GPD Win 4 6800u. The device doesn't get hot but it gets uncomfortably warm and it's the loudest device. While I absolutely appreciated a physical keyboard and mouse, there was virtually no software to improve the experience or adjust the device. The calibration software was in Chinese and not clear. It makes me appreciate how much work and nuance is in the Armory crate. The ability to adjust TDP, updates to firmware, updates to bios, set macros. Also, the ability to quickly adjust settings Like CPU boost, controls, resolution, FSR etc. In addition each game can have specific adjustments including CPU boost, TDP, Gyro. Lastly you can calibrate all the sensors and controls. Sure you can use third part apps but nothing comes close to having it all in one spot and per game profiles. The only thing I do miss is the design and the mouse nub.
I moved from the Win 4 to the Win Mini, and I absolutely loved for the form factor over the Win 4. That said, there's something about the girth (pause) that made the Win 4 feel premium to other devices in the same range.
As someone who has been using the 8840u version, I could not be happier with how I've been using the device. It unfortunate you tried dealing with the stock software to handle all of those settings, because the correct answer would be to use Handheld Companion instead and have 0 issues. I never felt the need to calibrate anything on the device in my time using it, and as for all of those updates, Windows handled almost everything except graphics and CPU drivers. Everything else was set. But the elephant in the room is absolutely the heat that's created from this device. Specifically the right hand side, I can only play about 35 minutes of Wukong or any other high-intensity AAA title before it gets UNCOMFORTABLY hot to hold. An easy fix for that is buying or printing a grip for the thing, but that kind of defeats the slim form factor.
Have to agree. I owned the GPD Win 4 8840U and surprisingly running Black Myth Wukong is a breeze and I am running between 15-18w and getting above 50-60fps easily on low settings.
@@Kaiqi107 I’m not saying using it is wrong. But measuring fps with it turned on doesn’t make sense. Here your 50-60fps is generated by algorithm and that doesn’t count for the device’s rendering capability.

I own one and I can tell you that the only time I would ever want to type on the thing is if my kids are using my phone. This means I have another device to use but otherwise I would never want to. However the one thing that the keyboard is extremely helpful for is hotkeys. Sure something like the steam deck can have four different hot keys mapped to the back but being limited to four is a problem. I can access all of them with this and I honestly can't imagine using a handheld that can't do that.
BIG TIP for anyone using this device or anything else from GPD; DO NOT use the stock software for adjusting TDP, use the paid version of Handheld Companion to enable Auto TDP and get a bunch more controller settings in addition to some other things as well. Using this has it so I can switch from Wukong to playing my Switch games without making any adjustments in the settings and still not using any excess power
A perfect device with AR glasses like Xreal or Legion glasses. All that holds it back is cooling & fan noise. I'm sure this will improve with more efficient chips & TDP in the future. Exciting times!
I like my gpd win 4, it's my device I take with me on the go instead of my Legion go or rog ally. Simple fact is that it is much smaller than all the other handhelds, it's easier to pack and you can fit it in your sweater pocket. Having a device with a lanyard that goes around your wrist really takes away the worry that you might drop your device on the hard floor or pavement while walking around. Plus the battery life isn't that bad tbh, it's a 45.62Wh battery which is bigger than the original rog ally, but smaller than the Legion go. The SSD is also a 2280, I have the 4tb 64gb ram 7840u and it's just loaded with games lol
Fan noise and Battery life seem to be the biggest issues with these things. I heard from other reviewers that steam OS is just so much better with the UI too. I really hope these handheld manufacturers either start putting in steam OS or Microsoft does some heavy software engineering and has like an "xbox" mode where it just turns windows 11 into and xbox.
What most people don’t know about GPD is that they have a GPD OS available for download on their website for all of their devices, and it’s Steam OS running on Manjaro. I feel like the mainstream market has already influenced people away from these Chinese developed handhelds, offering more features at lower prices.
