Good to see you have Your first Milky way image for the New Year I'm still trying for mine due to clouds ruining my to two outings! My tip would be to do sky first and foreground last and make use of the blue hour ? And Richard comment is good too about the bloated stars gives a different look
Thanks so much John. Such a shame the weather hasn't been playing nice for you. Great tip about using blue hour for the foreground - and that is in effect what I did for the 35mm shot. It was definitely a balancing act between leaving the sky shots long enough to maximise the height of the core above the horizon, but not so long they get washed out with dawn and/or zodiacal light.

@@JauneMacReadyI recently acquired the dji Osmo pocket 3 and am very impressed so definitely would be looking at a DJI drone too. Was considering the Fly 3 as it has the 2 cameras but the mini might be a better intro to drones
@@GrowPhotography I'm so tempted with the Pocket 3! Fortunately for me, and my bank balance I'm controlling myself 🤣 Have a check about any laws on drones in your area of the world. The Mini ones are under 250g so can go pretty much anywhere without worry. Anything above that weight can have restrictions. But if you're flying out in the wild that isn't going to be such an issue. Happy drone hunting 👍
Great video Greg. If I heard you correctly, when you mentioned your camera settings for the time lapse, did I hear you correctly to say you use Program Mode? If that is right, would you mind expanding a little on your experience using P Mode for night photography. I have used P Mode for night photos on a very limited basis and find it an interesting alternative. Thank you for sharing your work.
Hi William, yes I often use P mode for timelapses, especially if there is going to be variable lighting conditions like night to day and vice versa. The Nikon Z cameras have excellent capabilities in this area - basically doing exposure ramping. I have auto ISO enabled, but have it limited to a max of 3200. The timelapse settings also limit the shutterspeed so it can't go over the interval setting (usually 15s to avoid star trails).
Thank you for the update Greg. You are the first photographer I've come across using this interesting technique. My D780 incorporates some of the Z-6 features so I think I'll give it a try. Really appreciate you making and sharing your videos.

I think you are right Paul but it was a bit hard to tell because Venus was so bright as well, but considering the time we were shooting there should have been zodiacal light.

I live in Sydney, but one of my daughters is moving to Perth within the next month, so my fatherly duties will require some visits to the west, which will have to include my shooting some nightscapes in your part of our country. I now know of one location to try when I get over there! What brand/model is the bag you have slung between your tripod legs? I need something like that, so any info you can give me would be appreciated.

I bought the stone bag from Amazon a few years ago now but just had a search and I think it is a Vanguard SB-100 Stone Bag. Very useful when you're fumbling around in the dark - I even put stones in it one windy night 🤣. Happy to recommend some locations when you're planning your trip.

The one photo of the tree with blob stars...was that intentional? Better to get stars slightly out of focus and larger so the star trails are more impressive?
It wasn't intentional but rather a happy mistake 😊. I forgot to refocus on the stars after shooting the foreground tree resulting in slightly out of focus stars 🤦It does result in a bolder style of star trails.
