I was playing Metal Gear Peace Walker and I was cheking the Outer Ops, I had a soldier that I send to so many missions that he already had all his abilities at maximum and his life and psique at 9999, he was Dingo. I really felt like a great Comandante with that guy, if the game let me I would have named him leader of the combat unit. That day I saw what probably was the hardest mission in Outer Ops. I make sure I had all vehiucles at 100% and I send all of them along with my best soldiers and, of course, leading all of them, Dingo. The mission was acompllished, two of the vehicles were destroyed, and three soldiers were sent to the hospital, but I have sent 4 soldiers. I slowly skipped hoping that no one was dead, but no, one of the men was killed in action. He was Dingo. When I saw that I was about to reset the emulator and send another man to the mission. But I stoped to think, if he was the best soldier then why he was killed unlike the rest of the team? Then I realized, that he died protecting them. And I learned, that losing your best men is part of war, you must have the strenght to carry on, and make their sacrifice be worthed, cause that's what he would have wanted. It was only a screen saying "Dingo died" but is incredible how this game can make you feel something like that.
NemesisWesker i think something got in my eye, IM NOT CRYING, YOU ARE!
NemesisWesker I used to feel the same way about two soldiers in the combat unit. Both died in action. RIP Garfish and Trout.
NemesisWesker Wow. It's... really moving. 😢
I'm sorry.
Yes, that hypothesis fits well with the story. I guess the great Kojima thought about that, too. Outer ops were very addictive, i remember.

Leon8937 but it needs that crescendo or it would get boring and repetitive easily. It needed that "spike" and the slow but steady decrescendo after that to remain interesting. It's simple but effective and that part also opens up different ways to perform the song. That moment you realize that "Heavens Divide" is Snake's response to The Boss' "Snake Eater"...
Also, the metaphor of “heavens dividing” could also mean the sky splitting effect of a nuclear explosion, like Big Boss’ threat of nukes as a deterrence/means to an end… all in the hopes of “leaving a trace for love to find a way”. Or it could just be a clever way of saying "when pigs fly".

Almost cry at that part trying not to crack because my sister is in the same room I am in…

That´s so cool, just the moment image changes.
The "ending" for Peace Walker was one of the moments in MGS where it's actually ends in a happy ending.
Shit. Big Boss stopped two nuclear wars, a virus and the Patriots. And in result? He lossed everything. His mentor, his friends, his base, his nation, his people, his lover (sort of), his sons, his phantom and finally... his soul. Poor bastard. Atleast he could finally rest. With his son in his arms.
And then MGSV happened.

She was a True Patriot to raise a fine soldier like you.
Did she, in any way, also given you weapons, taught you techniques, and endowed you with knowledge?
Man ... I can relate to this part of lyric so hard
All mothers around the world are like The Boss from that game series
As much as I wish Snake would've remained the face of the series, I think we can all agree that Big Boss is one of the most well crafted villains in video game history
ainsley toledo there’s no good and bad guys there’s only viewpoints
Kayn The shadow reaper I never agreed with that idea. It's close to impossible to justify Big Boss's actions. Yeah he's right about soldiers not having much of a place to go once a war is over and once there's peace, but that doesn't make it okay to create a world of eternal war. His use of child soldiers, his nonchalance towards Venom Snake's existence, his refusal to let Kaz in on his Outer Heaven plan, and his relationship with Solid Snake make him a villain, and the way he's presented as a messiah on the battlefield and the hero of military figures is what makes him a good villain imo.
You're wrong. Have you ever heard of the zero-approval gambit?
Big Boss may seem like a villain, but he actually wasn't throughout the whole entire game. I see your arguments about child soldiers and Kaz and everything, but don't forget that the Foxhound unit and MSF were both meant to disable nuclear capabilities across the world so that it could be a safer place. Big Boss purposely did those things to make himself seem as though he'd been the enemy so that the world had something else to focus on rather than going at it with each other. Much like Lelouch from Code Geass, if that makes sense. He not only was the main character, but he made himself look like a villain so that the world had a much more pressing matter on their hands and thus, unifying the world by making them have a common enemy.
Let's not forget that the Patriots are the real villains, and technically at a time, Solid Snake too, because they sought unification through much more radical things, like engineering diseases and creating super soldiers in order to follow through with their plan. Unifying the wrold through surveillance and showing a distrust to those who may have seemed suspicious, re-engineering HISTORY to try and make this goal a reality.
Big Boss I'm sure cared about Kaz, and I'm sure he wanted Kaz to know about the OH program but Kaz proved himself to be unstable after the events of MSF's downfall. Instead of being sane, Kaz wanted revenge, Kaz drove himself mad about it. Instability in a plan like this could compromise the whole thing. What I'm trying to say here, Big Boss wanted to cut some ties because the bigger picture, a safer world, could have been jeopardized.
Finally, Venom was a good soldier. He took it up in HIS OWN HANDS to run Mother Base -- and.. Major Zero made the request to clone Big Boss in the first place. It's not like BB could even make the request himself since he too was in a nine year coma. Don't forget that Major Zero is also the leader of the Patriots.
So, a short summary, Big Boss isn't a villain because while yes, he did do somewhat heinous things, there was a bigger picture, about peace and safety through the union of a common enemy, and of course, having a battlefield where a soldier could live his life in a constant battle.
hideyoshi yasho I never thought of it that way. Funny how one can see multiple perspective at one thing can reveal many colors.
@@hideyoshiyasho1269 i see your point but well i still see him as a villain. The best villains always think they are the hero, no matter how much they refuse that name. They do follow ideals that are certainly great but go to heinous lengths to accomplish those. Any villain who's worth a dime is a hero at heart. That's what makes them compelling and fearsome at the same time. They cannot be reasoned with as they could perfectly reason their deeds if they wanted too. And ofc due to 3 games from boss perspective we can argue if he's a protagonist or villain but in MG and MGS1 he certainly is. Throughout the entire series i see him as a villain but i certainly understand everyone seeing him as a hero/protagonist. But as i said, a compelling villain has to be both. I hate "boo I'm so evil and want to kill you for no reason" villains like Voldemort from Harry potter. They certainly create a simple narrative but that's it. No reason to think about their points. They are evil and that's it. Villains like big boss are much more fascinating. Because yes, they DO have a point usually a pretty strong point. Just their methods are hurtful and cruel to many and even if they care, even if it hurts them, it does not stop them. And in the end this makes them villains. Be it big boss creating an eternal war industry or Madara from Naruto shippuuden forcing the whole world into an eternal dream, because otherwise he does not believe peace can be achieved.
That line "Time will come to softly lay me down, so I can her face that I long to see", brings me to tears every time man. I feel so bad for Big Boss. What a fucking phenomenal series.
Remember: all of this brilliant storytelling ended up with wormholes and zombies.
brainz
The story ended with 4. Kojima was clever to make the final chapter ahead of time.
Technically Revengence is last in the timeline.
redlol123 Sure, but it was Raiden's story. The Snakes' stories ended with 4.
I guess.
Big Boss's salute is so symbolic. Despite his position as a leader fighting for freedom, deep down he's still a soldier following orders from himself. Believing one day he would've repaid his debt to his mentor.
*Which he did, at the very end*
To be honest, I think the only person he follows other than himself is The Boss. At 3:07, he only saluted to one person only: His mother of war, The Boss.

The interesting, and somewhat unsettling thing about this song, is that it's Big Boss singing. Those lyrics are coming from his heart, although of course he'd never be able to openly express his emotions in this way, most of the time he keeps them bottled up inside, but this song reveals bluntly what is really going on inside of him all the time. All the while he's building his private army, becoming a legend, attaching soldiers to balloons and shooting down Pooyans and doing goofy nonsense, while all of this is going on, in his heart, Big Boss is broken. "And all the hearts, once new, old and shattered now." It describes his descent into villainy, because the disturbing aspect that I mentioned, is that despite being so beautiful on the surface, when you actually pay attention to the lyrics, this is actually a very dark song. It describes Big Boss's heart as old and shattered, his words becoming frosted (meaning he's growing cold), and how the hate is gradually growing within him, burning wild. At the same time, the song also shows Boss's growing ego and developing insanity, claiming that he will "shine like the sun", setting himself up almost as some Messiah figure to soldiers around the world, and declaring that he will "scorch" his name into the sky so people will never forget him. The beauty on the surface underlying this disturbing content is a clever parallel with Big Boss himself, the way he portrays himself on the surface as a beautiful, larger-than-life hero, the legend who saved the world and wants to shelter and protect all his fellow soldiers, belying a man intent on watching the world burn in armageddon just to satiate his own ego and need for thrills.
Damn...
I never noticed that last part about him scorching his name into the sky. I can kinda see why you would interpret it as showing his insanity. The video itself shows this part as the petals turn red too. The way they created his character is really brilliant.
His descent to villainy also correlates what his role is in the future as mankinds biggest terrorist out there just to fix what he broke and continue on the bosses dream of a perfect world
The Boss' dream is not a perfect world, but a "free" world.
00vondough00 fuck I should have used free instead thanks man

Five years ago I was replaying Peace Walker. My father, someone who never liked videogames, but loved music, was staying at home all day due to being jobless and sick. One thing I desired was to finish the game so he could listen to Heavens Divide, for I thought he would like the song. Didn't want to just make him listen to it on a cellphone, always found that awkward. I wanted for him to listen to it as I finished the game.
I was listening to it on my iPod one day, while coming home from college. I found my building's doors wide open and an ambulance outside.
My father had died of a heart attack while I was at school. He never got to listen to this song.
This song means... A lot more now to me, for I also wait for the day when I'll lay down and see his face, that I long to see.

After he died I felt lost, It felt like I was losing an old friend and mentor. After his funeral I listened to this song again and it felt like the whole meaning of the song changes. When I heard the lyrics “When heavens divide time will come to softly lay me down” I broke down and looked into the sky. To this day this song still reminds me of that time. But I don’t feel sad when I listen to it, it’s almost soothing to me now.

I watched this video well over 100 times since 2 years ago, and only now I see that this wasn´t an official music video made by Konami to celebrate MGS´s aniversary but a fan made video. I can´t even describe how I'm feeling rn. Liked and subscribed, thats the best I can do.

As sad as it is to see Metal Gear gone and done, maybe it is better this way. The legacy of the series we live doesn't have to be dragged through the dirt by more tripe like "Metal Gear Survive". It may be over, but while it lasted it was beautiful.

Big Boss aims the Patriot at the Konami logo. Isn't that so symbolic? Rightfully and deservedly so. Great job :)
