Marques Keith Brownlee is a RUclips star behind the massively popular MKBHD channel. Over the span of his 15-year-old content creator career, Marques Brownlee grew to 20 million subscribers surpassing 4 billion total views and that only vaguely illustrates the true heights of his success.
Marques started making content in 2009, when he was still in high school and in a few years, he became the face of technology videos on RUclips. In 2013, a senior vice president of Google called him “the best technology reviewer on the planet right now”. In 2019, he won “Creator of the Decade”. MKBHD’s fame was acknowledged also by his interviews with big tech CEOs as well as Kobe Bryant and Bill Gates. Marques is also a star of the Retro Tech RUclips Originals series produced by Vox Media Studios and he recently became a board member of Ridge, a super popular sponsor of RUclips channels.
His success, fame and wealth is out of this world. Especially at his young age. Marques is barely 30 now and he’s been on the top stop before he even graduated college. But it seems that not even that amount of success is enough, if you think you have a loyal audience of millions of people who will consume anything you have to sell them.
Marques Brownlee decided to embark on another endeavor to attain even more wealth by making an app. Now Marques has a degree in business and IT so you’d think his app must be a total banger. Something humble but with great value.
So what did Marques make? A wallpaper app. And not just any wallpaper app. MKBHD’s wallpaper app that is a privacy nightmare and a shameless cash grab disaster.
The revenue split between artist and the Panels app is 50/50, with the Panels cut further split in half between Brownlee and the Panels developer.

That's kind of what I was hoping for... a venue for him to use brand to lure more people into supporting good artists. But together with his developer, they take 50% off of every transaction.

He just strikes me as a salesman and a schmoozer, not personally trustworthy.

all he's ever been interested in were new shiny tech products he buys every year. he's just a consumerist, plain and simple, and majority of people are the same hence why he's got so many followers. never addressing the actual problem, maybe tip-toeing around it. tech cultists are interested only in the newest hardware and how quickly it boots and opens an app.
I love that you took time to speak about 'crash logs' and 'encryption in transit' for this. Great stuff. The second half of the vid, in particular, is really helpful.

The impression I've got of MKBHD is that he's a brand-safe and reliable influencer for the big tech companies. Feels more at home in 2014. Nowadays, I can't stand that combination of consumerism and Silicon Valley tech optimism.
This is actually everything I hate about Android or similar platforms, and why I love FOSS platforms so much. You can't download a calculator app these days or a wallpaper app without it having a subscription or a million ads on Google Play Store, when I look up apps for my Linux desktop yes I might get fewer results but the app I get will simply do what I need and get out of my way. We should create a culture around donating to projects we enjoy using not paywall everything in the way that somehow your average dev still doesn't get a share of profits.
I do also use linux a lot, but I simply can not imagine "linux" and "get out of my way" put together.
Android is innocent. You have fdroid and Izzy. Gapps on Android is the problem. And apps that ask for gapps are the disease.
I have a degoogled phone with microg to use some apps and have notifications (unfortunately, I need some non foss apps for work and life).
There is f-droid if you want that on Android. Blaming Android as a hole is not fair I guess.

Take it from a web dev - Their app is so absolutely easy to develop and deploy, you could hire a guy to do it for you in 1-2 days - And it would actually scale on iPads (it's pixelated as hell on mine).
What's even funnier is that their API was so terribly secured, I managed to get access to every single "premium" image for free.
It's a disaster.

My guess is that he was approached by the app developer and asked to "put his face on" this app in exchange for a commission or whatever. Easiest buck in the world so he signed not caring about what it does and this is just the result of it. It's very similar to how sportsball people advertise their supposed brand of sportswear while they're not required to give the slightest f-ck about how its made, is it made with quality or whatever. The celeb gets its cut, the maker gets its boost in sales and the fool and his fortune are soon parted.

Speaking of security expertise, the app had an unsecured API and because of that, someone has leaked all of the full resolution wallpapers.
Why is anyone in the least bit surprised? From time 0 he's pushsed big tech, "reviewed" their products without even a passing acknowledgement that the devices are effectively spyware and keyloggers.
He’s just another famous and perceptively well loved RUclips tech reviewer on top of his game attempting to get a cut of the perceptive market in digital wallpapers regardless of how personal info of users of his new app is harvested! He’s really becoming an economic shill trying to get ahead of the game because there’s very little left for him to accomplish facing reach the top. It’s now survival for him or fade into oblivion in the public eye, which is frightening for him!
It's good people are blasting this guy for this useless app, I just wished people had done the same when he, with the insane reach he has on RUclips and social media, refused to cover and inform people about the massive invasion to privacy with the on-device scanning that Apple planned some years ago (maybe they did it anyway and we never knew)

I stopped watching him slowly after realizing the promise on reviewing phones also on a sustainability/repairability basis went nowhere. That was his saying in the Fairphone video.
Never liked his videos - they were mostly advertisements of products he 'reviewed'. I have found Michael Fisher / Geekyranjit (an Indian channel) to be far more reliable when coming to reviewing a product.

It's hard to understand why a wealthy person for which their personal brand is everything would risk it by haphazardly putting their name and face on a thing like this. I assume MKBHD only had surface level involvement in the actual product and signed off on it without looking too closely - not too dissimilar from all those celebrity-endorsed crypto and NFT projects from a couple of years ago.
It's crazy he reviews phones, he would have known that there's a lot of phones that has this as standard. This is just a straight up scam.

TBF he said that there is "a lot more planned" for this app, but I am not so sure after this disastrous start 😂 really sad how out of touch a tech reviewer can be with tech reality. No word about where the money is going, breaking his own advice of not purchasaing based on a promise of future updates, a privacy nightmare, no good value, not even a good app experience... Seems like literally EVERYTHING was done wrong and without ANY thought. It's really a shame. I dont think he has always been like this and I think he doesnt even mean to today, hes just not the same person he started out as. If you watch his first videos, he was just an honest kid talking to a camera. Why does it always have to go this way :(

I like your vids because they are usually well researched. Unfortunately this seems rushed and incoherent. It is possible you want to get in because the story is hot but I don't think that should be at the expense of quality content. This video could easily have been 5-10 mins
i watched the LLT jeopardy show LLT did a few years ago and i was shocked how little they know about the fundamentals of the tech or how any of it works under the hood, they review including MKBHD.

Almost 100% agree with you. Also thanks for the alternatives. But MKBHD taking 50% seems fair. Most employers take more than 50%. RUclips and Valve were not in the same position as an artist being distributed through a WIDELY known brand. Valve and RUclips were at zero and had to make people come to them, not the other way around. It makes sense because more loss per customer BUT higher volume = lower loss per customer BUT low volume. MKBHD has huge distribution and is offering it for 50%.

these kinda app usually have hundreds of "consent" button to toggle off and they never give the single option to decline all at once.
‘Abstruct’ is probably my favourite app for wallpapers. Everything on that app is made by a single artist who also designs wallpapers for oneplus
I don't think this will catch on. I genuinely can't imagine someone being happy to pay so much for a wallpaper app.
You completely missed the value of a curated gallery that also supports the creators. I worked with a few and having less better quality stuff will always beat swimming through a see of garbage. The price tho? It's probably a non issue for people that already spent a grand on the phone, so is the revshare split at this volume. The rest of the points, especially about privacy - solid.
@The Hated One you are still a little behind the curve (if you didnt make a video on this already): any wallpaper (unless really common and shared by mani people with the same exact color coding) is potentially deanonymizing. Look into it ;-)

you do know an ad blocker no more ad games right? as seen in other videos a pi hole or such means just wallpaper is all you see. also paid version is supposedly to support over 50+ artists etc. which you stated at start is good to support artists etc. yes 50 might be to much but who decides this the user. simply do not pay and get. ad blocker at app lvl done then no support to artists. uh me for one don't need this app thingy bc my wallpaper is to basic lol

Never been a subscriber of Marques Keith Brownlee.
Personally I just never thought the guy was really good. Just a guy who knew how to shoot a video and maybe learn about new tech. But other than that I would never consider him for proper reviews of a product. He was always at least the last 6-8 years just a guy to more advertise products for big companies. I have only recently found that he was doing youtube since he was kid.
