  • Macedonia and Bulgaria are neighboring countries in the Balkans that have walked together in many stages of their history. They represent the past, present, and future of a region with a special relevance in the history of European nations. If you ever have the opportunity, please take your time to visit these two fascinating countries, definitely, the pearls of the Balkans. This travel documentary is not intended to provide an exhaustive review of both countries. It simply reflects my views and experiences during a sixteen-day family trip in August 2014.

There was no war in Macedonia in the 90's, the old looking buildings you saw (some under construction) were brand new (skopje 2014 project).

There was a war in Macedonia in 2001 but also the 1999 NATO bombing near Macedonia and the 1991 tense breakup of Yugoslavia.

The other very historical town they at least showed is Veliko Tarnovo - the the Ancient Bulgarian Capital. Veliko Tarnovo, originally Tarnovgrad (Търновград), become the strongest Bulgarian fortification of the Middle Ages between the 12th and 14th centuries and the most important political, economic, cultural and religious centre of the empire.
In the 14th century, based on Tarnovo's preeminent cultural influence in Eastern Europe, the city became often referred to as the third Rome, with only Constantinople and Rome being more influential cities in Europe.Тhe political upsurge and spiritual development of Tarnovo were halted when the Ottoman Empire captured the city on 17 July 1393.
/ The siege lasted for three months, with the Bulgarian Patriarch Evtimiy leading the defence. The siege of Veliko Tarnovo (Grand Tarnovo) in 1393 by the Ottomans after more than three months succeeded and the city was only broken into and subsequently burned down due to a treachery from an insider/

I don't understand what the argument here is all about. Check academic resources or simply google it. Bulgarians say that Macedonians are Bulgarians and Greeks say that Macedonians are Bulgarians. Besides that, the whole world besides Macedonia agrees with that. Genetic research, historical data, Archaeological data etc. have reached the same conclusion- Macedonians are Bulgarians and Alexander the Great was Greek! Macedonian language is a Bulgarian dialect. Also, anyone who says that Bulgarians are mongol turks bla bla bla, it means they havent been there. We have minorities of Jipsies and Turks as most European countries do. But saying that Bulgarians have nothing to do with Macedonians is absolutely stupid because the languages are almost identical, countries are right next to each other, and native people look identical. The world and science agrees with Bulgarians. The world and science LAUGHS at "Macedonians".

What is the difference between Greek and Bulgarian physical looks? Lets be realistic. You cannot call out by appearance a Greek from a Bulgarian from a Romanian from a Serbian from a Macedonian. We are all Balkan nations and we have merged our genes for thousands of years through Bulgarians taking over then Byzantine taking over etc. etc. I have a Greek friend. Very cool and open minded guy. He calls me a brother and I call him that too because we both know that the only difference between us is language and somewhat culture. Cheers brother ;)

Nestor Lichev - this was planned a long time ago - the Propaganda began 24 years ago that I know of...
I personally marched to Washington DC when the 1991 name change took effect - We Greeks thought it was a joke at first - because there was NO connection to Greeks ancient or otherwise to Vardarskians/Yugoslavs at all, the reporters all asked the same question of us... "what's in a name, what is the issue" -- WELL AS IT WAS APPARENT TO US THEN AS IT IS NOW --- Our Name / Our History --- that's what's in a name!!! For those of you who don't understand it - it's called Propaganda 101

*“Propaganda and the Macedonian question.* Those aspects of the FYROM's policy, both at home and abroad, which lie at the heart of the tensions with Greece, are as follows:
      i) *The undermining of the history of geographical Macedonia, chiefly by disputing the uninterrupted Hellenic presence and influence in the region.* After *the official birth of the 'Macedonian' state on 2nd August 1944*, its intellectual leaders launched a systematic campaign for international recognition of the 'Macedonian' nation. Their aim was twofold: first to establish the unbroken continuity of the 'Macedonian nation' after the first Slavonic tribes appeared in the Macedonian region in the 7th century AD; and second, to cast doubt on or nullify the historical and cultural presence of the neighboring peoples -the Greeks, the Serbs and the Bulgarians. *The outdated notion that the [ancient] Macedonians were not Greek was completely demolished by the archaeological investigations and excavations in and around Vergina in the 1970s and 1980s*.
ii) *The systematic cultivation of a spirit of vindication and the consequent by the FYROM of territorial claims against Greece.*
iii) *The constant and escalating accusations against Greece of systematic violations of the basic human right of the so-called 'Macedonian minority in 'Aegean Macedonia'.* In the case of Greece in particular, the self-styled 'Macedonians' who are demanding their rights so vociferously are a handful of known individuals.
iv) *The periodical appearance and activity of Slavomacedonian extremist and paramilitary organizations, which encourage subversive activities against the Greek state through statements, proclamations, calendars, and propaganda leaflets.*“

95% of ancient Macedonia is in todays Greek region of Macedonia. Here's a map of ancient Macedonia after Philip II of Macedon death.
    upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/95/ExpansionOfMacedon.jpg
    upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/LocationMacedonia-MAC-1-z.png
And a map of todays Greek region of Macedonia.
    upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/LocationMacedonia-HEL-1-z.png
And that includes: Pella, Vergina (Aigai), Dion, Philippi, Amphipolis, Pydna, Thessaloniki and other minor ancient Macedonian sites.
Pella, second capital of ancient Macedonia and birthplace of Alexander the Great and Philip II of Macedon.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pella
Vergina (Aigai), first capital of ancient Macedonia and the Macedonian Royal Tombs including the unlooted tombs of Philip II of Macedon (including Philip's armor and bones in a golden larnax with the Vergina or Macedonian star on top) and Alexander IV of Macedon. UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE today.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vergina
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larnax
Dion, the sacred city of ancient Macedonians.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dion,_Pieria
Philippi, city founded by Philip II of Macedon and named after him.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippi
Amphipolis, with the largest Macedonian tomb ever found (500 meters).
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphipolis
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasta_Tomb
Pydna, one of the most important cities of ancient Macedonia.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pydna
Thessaloniki, last important city of ancient Macedonia, founded by Cassander of Macedon and named after Alexander the Great's sister, Thessalonike of Macedon. It's the capital of todays region of Macedonia in Greece. Also second largest most important city of Byzantine Empire (called co-reign city with Constantinople in Byzantine times) and site of 17 UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessaloniki
And I shall not mention the hundreds of Macedonian tombs discovered in Greece while none in FYROM.
Now let's go forward and see what Wikipedias of English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish and Russian Wikipedias have to say.
Yes, all of them say ancient Macedonia was Greek.
    English
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia_(ancient_kingdom)
    Spanish
    es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reino_de_Macedonia
    French
    fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royaume_de_Macédoine
    German
    de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makedonien_(antikes_Königreich)
    Italian
    it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regno_di_Macedonia
    Turkish
    tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makedonya_(antik_krallık)
    Russian
    ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Древняя_Македония
Rest of languages of Wikipedia also say it's Greek. Only FYROM language wikipedia says otherwise... strange isn't it?

Panayiotis Bosmis That's a good question. As far as I know, he spoke an ancient version of Greek, derived from the Atica, known as common Greek. Apart from that, I guess he also spoke ancient Macedonian. Am I right?

Lonely Visions Aleksandar the Great spoke Macedonian. and yes he also spoke Greek but his mother tongue was Macedonian. Just like in todays society the universal language is English, well...in Aleksandar the Greats time, Greek was the universal language. So, everyone had to know how to speak Greek to communicate with different 'tribes' and regions.

MKD ZED ''For all these reasons me as a descend of Hercules and Hellas(Greece) will fight for our revenge and freedom against Persians''... Alexander the Great in Aryan's Alexander's Anavasis
''Thank Gods I was born Hellene(Greek) and not a barbarian'' Alexander the Great in Plutarch's Parallel lives
Macedonian was a Greek Dorian dialect and that is very clear in all ancient scripts.
We native north Greeks speak even today that same language cause we real Macedonians are a Greek tribe since ever, since the first day Greek prince of Argos Karanos founded the Greek kingdom of Macedonia in 8th c Before christe.
You speak a Bulgaroserbian language, you are pure South Slavs, you came in Balkans in 6th century AFTER CHRISTE and you have NONE relation to all these stories!!!

“The Slavmacedonians (FYROMians) have only a connection of geography [FYROM corresponds to ancient Paeonia and now borders with real Macedonia, Greece] to the ancient Macedonians, whose most famous son, Alexander the Great, died hundreds of years before Slavs even arrived in the Balkans. *It's an insult that the Republic of Macedonia names the airport of its capital city 'Alexander the Great'*. Pursuing *a fraudulent identity*, Skopje has built statues to a Hellenic-speaking tribe *with which it has no lineage*. Only *an accident of history resulted in the southern part of Yugoslavia (FYROM) having the same name.*”

Alan Piersonn There is a lot you didn't know, my friend... “The cultural identity of the people of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) has been an issue of contention and confusion. From the start the new republic aroused antagonism in Greece, which objected to its use of the name *'Macedonia', a Greek word*, since *the people of the FYROM are ethnically and linguistically Slavic*. Slavomacedonian nationalists of the FYROM regularly claim as part of their cultural identity architectural and artistic artifacts [and the history] *of the classical Greek period and earlier.*”

You are correct when you say Alexander the Great was a Macedonian conqueror - but then you completely ruined it because you lost me - when you said that Skopje has 66% Macedonians, 10% Albanians and 5% Romanians --
Macedonians are Greek - Then in Ohrid you said 80% Macedonians, 7% Albanians, 5% Turks...!!!!!!!!
The group "Macedonians" does not a one ethnic group make there... Only in Greece would that be a true statement -
There it is a "mix of peoples" stop there!!!!!!!! Clearly you are not a historian - you are a travel guide - travel broker or something to that effect??? Understandable... lived in Bulgaria for two years,Sophia is nice and so is Varna as long as you are in the city centers or the tourist areas,Plovdiv is gorgeous too,but the outskirts of these places the infrastructure is bad in some areas,ok as a tourist, but to live if you come from a non communist era country it can be bit of a shock, but you get used to it and take no notice after a while..found the people of Bulgaria hard to get to know but once you do they are very helpful people but in Varna some do like to portray the macho man image, was often out for a few beers and found that people in bars(Varna) do not seem to mix with each other, they like to stay in their groups where as in my country everybody talks to everybody and mixes...Macedonia I found it just as nice in places when I visited and no offence to Bulgarians they seem to be more open people, more friendly in Bars etc and mix with people more and they smile!!!that is one thing I noticed about living in Varna people commented on that I smiled a lot...then I noticed people seemed very serious even my Bulgarian friends agreed on this, even a taxi driver told me and my girlfriend that we seemed nice happy people because we were smiling!!...I grew to love Bulgaria and the countryside there and got to say I miss it.

Fantastic job and well done presentation, something that people who do not know much about other places can easily feel the spirit of the Balkans. Great approach to both countries without any prejudice or political insinuations. What I do not understand is why some individuals have to ruin almost every beauty of youtube with their aggressive political terrorism? Why the Bulgarians and the Greeks always have to attack the Macedonians? Nestor Lichev, panel linismos and so many others, what gives you the right to tell others who and what they are? Do you REALLY know who YOU are? Instead of spreading around your political venom, enjoy the BEAUTIFUL scenery and show some appreciation to this wonderful man and his great work. Love the world so it can love you back!!!!

it's a big mistake to say that there are 5% Romanians. Perhaps there are 5 Romanians in whole country. There are about 500 000 Bulgarians is what everyone knows.
