Always a good review, but you seemed a little distracted, or bummed out, and not because of the figure.
i wanted to apologize if my last comment was taken personally or as an insult. You're a great reviewer, and I've come to really count on your vids for my purchases. You're a man of integrity and it's shown in your past episodes. I appreciate a guy who isn't going to tell me to buy a piece of shit just because some company gave you a wad of cash.

I loved the throw away comment "it's badcube, so we're not expecting a fun easy transformation!" This is why I have decided that I think I'm done with Badcube. As my collection has grown I have become tired with EXPLODE formers with just flaps and tabs. I want more like Fanstoys or Maketoys. Mastermind creations are becoming the masters of easy tranformations with complex looks.

I guess I'm kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch new tv shows online?
I disagree about manufacturers needing to downscale the alt modes in order to force the bot modes to meet the Sunbow not scale chart. I always though it was dumb for the cartoon to keep the Minibots mini, just because the toys were chibi style. The TFs were originally supposed to be robots in disguise, so their alt modes should have scaled right together. (Witness BC Warpath, who makes for a very satisfyingly big army tank.) I would not be butt hurt if MP Brawn was as big as MP Ironhide, since they're both light trucks. But it always rubbed me the wrong way that the mainline sports car bots were shown as bigger than macho truck bots.

Unfortunate. But the transformation can't be as bad as that wind charger. I Had to unscrew the arms to get the hands out!!
Yeah, I thought I broke mine when the back sections that cover the screws at the back of the car popped off. Also those arms are a joke. No mini bot transformation can be worse than that figure!

You would expect to get better Gears later, yet almost 4 and a half years later people are happy to be able to pre-order re-release for this guy (and/or BadCube Insecticons), as prices rocketed and this is still the best Gears out there :)
Hey Uncle Skullface, when will you be reviewing TFC Poseidon? Deathclaw's out, and I've heard lots of positive things about the final combination so I'd love to hear your input too.
All that crazy transformation. Maybe its good the hands don't open. SOmething else that can go wrong.

Nice review as always. The transformation seems like a small pain in the ass, but after getting proficient with Lorry this shouldn't be bad. If you get MMC Tarn, hopefully, you'll enjoy the simple transformation.

Have you looked into the Ace Design Immortal Series Ace-01 Tumbler/Cliffjumper? IDK, might be a good finish to the Minibots...might be a piece of dung ;) Great review my good man.

wow...I collect gunpla...and that transformation totally reminds me of like the MG Zeta 2.0 or the MG Delta Plus...what a horrible transformation sequence....and the end result(the robot) really isn't that nice to look at in my opinion...definitely going to skip this one..great skit btw..really smart..keep it up skully.

Badcube always overengineers their figures. Not usually very fun to transform.

Good review fella - pretty much summed up how i felt about him and Slick. The main bugging point was price - one figure is £55 here in the UK, yet there trail breaker version speed bump was only £80, heck FT's Willy was only £65. just can't see the justification of the expense and for it not to show in the character. shame as I was really eager for them.

For the most part I don't mind BC transformations, I quite enjoyed Trailbreaker but I just find this obnoxious. Its straightforward really, but as you say its just such a bear to get everything lined up it removes any sense of fun. And that's a real shame cos if it tabbed together properly without effort it would have been a whole lot better. Still, bot mode is pretty nice.

I wish I could say you're new at this, and this is an easy toy to transform, but... wow. Looks like an absolute nightmare.
I love Gears, and bot mode looks spot on, but this is a TRANSFORMER, so I have to consider the conversion scheme when making a purchase. It pains me to wait it out, but I'm gonna see what the other big boys can bring to the table. Too bad.

I have to ask... What's up with their plastic? I have the warpath and idk he seems cheap on the plastic side to me compared to my fanstoys and dare I say Takara bots. Does it feel cheap to you? I notice when you do a lot of BC you have stress marks almost immediately... It's really been turning me off from Badcube lately. They also should consider changing their name to "NoFunCube" cause those transformations give me anxiety
well... their plastic has changed some. the first 3 felt one way, sunsurge felt another, and trailbreaker and hoist were like a combination of the two. this one feels mostly like sunsurge to me. not the best, but far from the worst
He looks nice in both modes, but Badcube strikes me as a one trick pony. It's like they discovered the 'magical' transformation technique of exploding-fillet-panels and they do the same thing for all their figures. Most 3p companies try to adopt something different, but badcube has been doing the same since Warpath (and to a lesser extent Brawny).

I don't know why 3rd partys have such a hard time with the mini-bots. XTBs minis are a pain in the ass too! They seem to over think it, transformation only needs to be a step above main line deluxes imho. Mp articulation, G1 aesthetics and a fun transformation, why is that so hard?!?!

Darn it. I was really hoping they would knock this one out of the park. Not bad, I'm just not sure I need it after this review. I sure love their take on Sunstreaker though. I may still grab this, love Gears and need him on my shelf!

Something little that I started doing with this guy shaved off tons of frustration:
Those flip out clips in his chest plate? Skip 'em!
They don't actually hold the front together. They just keep the front wheels from collapsing. However, the wheels are plenty sturdy and all of the weight is in the back so it won't collapse. Skipping all of that headache actually leaves a relatively straightforward transformation.

no wrist swivel in this day and age?! I normally buy bad cubes offerings but this is so poor. it could've been so much better. The clear windshield totally ruins the alt mode. why didn't they go for black? The chest flap seems annoying too. Other the that it's nice, but it could've been so much more. Seems like they were a bit lazy on this release. When you compare this to brawn it's really poor.
i agree, but its worth noting that this is significantly smaller and less expensive than brawn, but i would have rather paid more and got more

I got mine last week. And it was annoying as hell. The worst part is trying to line up those tiny gray tabs. To lock into the front wheels. Mine kept moving. So i decided to not even bother locking them in.I used just the bumber tabs instead. And the back was annoying too. If they made him a little bit bigger and thicker. Say like brawny. Then he would be easier to transform.

man Xtransbots still the king of pain in da ass transformations. Badcube is right behind them tho,but they make nice looking bots tho. Badcube payoff to get there not always fun.

Great review, shame as ever getting a degree in Quantum thermal dynamics is easier than a badcube transformation. I know i will never transform sunsurge back to car mode. But i do feel they tend to capture the essence of the character.. there is no mistaking its gears.. just will be another non transforming transformer on my shelf!

We'll see what future companies attempt but this may be a tfcon purchase in october. Its really not an MP look overall, more like a nice classics toy, but gears is an ugly fuck so i dismiss it lol

I find with transforming this figure, lining up the front last makes it easier to tab everything together... lock the legs in, front panels to the legs, wheels to pegs on chest panel, then the front center of vehicle mode hood... going in that order... it's A LOT easier to do.

While I appreciate their desire to honor the original's simple aesthetics, they should have also honored it's simpler transformation as well. :/

I wonder if the gun plugs in with the handle into the undercarriage? That way it's hidden better and the barrel is the tailpipe.

I got both grump and slick in a package deal. man no joke on the transformation. it takes patience to change both of them. The legs were easier than the upper body for me.

I really hope Badcube does a Tailgate and Windcharger, I always loved G1 Tailgate, and I was really excited for the Xtransbots one until it came out, and naturally, being Xtransbots, they botched it, horribly.
G1 Tailgate needs more love.

First video review of this guy I believe. Nice work Bobby. BadCube's minibots stand out on my MP shelf but not in a good way. I'm not sure why that is. There is something off about them.

I really had higher hopes for this and I know that the two of them were ones you were particularly looking forward to attaining. There is a bit of disappointment in your voice. Not hate, but definitely disappointment. To be fair, honest and true though, I still think they do a great job with their bots though. Complex overblown transformations aside, the end results are usually great.

+Bobby “Skullface” Skullface L thats how it was back when Quakewave first came out. I waited and waited till that second release came out. I think when they must have heard that crappy takara one was coming out. They released their variations. This Gears looks as if the factories got the scale wrong. And the designers said to just release it since the toy was already made. Its looks way to small. They should have Kept it Brawn sized.

Bobby, you know I love your reviews best, but I can never agree with these complaints about complext transformations. I do agree that even though this is such a small bot they DID manage to pack a lot of engineering and moving parts in there, but to me that is to their credit. I was a little worried that it would transform like the original minibots, but I sat there for a good while trying to figure it out before I got it (no instructions of course, cuz I'm not a sucka). I think the transformation os super fun, and might be the most "transformation value" we have in the smallest package of any transformer toy in existance. We can also agree both modes hit their desired cues well: bot mode looks goofy as per screen appearance, and vehicle does not scale as for mass-shifting malfunction. Thanks as always for your review!

Great review Skull Man!!! I love his look but holy cow is the transformation deceptively complex. In the end it has to be a pass do to the stress mark. No excuse for that kind of shoddy construction...

I'm coming into this guy years later, and honestly I found the transformation to be downright easy. I guess years of abuse from Fanstoys has made old Badcube figures seem easy by comparison.
It all comes down to order of tabbing.
For the front section pick a side to start and then tab the wheel into the grey tab on the chest panel, red panel into the blue tab from the fender and then the fender into the grill. Repeat on the other side. Once both sides are tabbed together the hood area becomes rock-solid.
When you're doing the roof, fit the arms around the grey armature FIRST and then tab the roof into the hood.
For the door panels, tab the rear fender into the door, fold out the running board and then take that whole assemble at an angle so you can tap the blue tab on the front edge of the door into the fender first, and then just tab the rest of the door tabs starting at the front and working your way to the back. Most will seat themselves.
I actually think this guy is a fun little figure. He's goofy looking but Gears is a goofy looking character.
And speaking from the distant future, despite your predictions no other company has tried their hand at a masterpiece Gears yet.
