It's just a good reminder to anybody who might take their bike too seriously. I love this bike because it's meant to be abused, dropped, crashed, etc. When I dropped my old VS800 I felt sick for days. When I drop this, I just laugh, pick it up, and get on my way. That's the beauty of a KLR.
Gittin' it done right! Seriously, why worry about paint scratches etc when you can just quick-mask and paint over any problems? Bikes like the DR and KLR are meant to be ridden.
Hmmm, that's too bad. This does require a few prepping steps... sanding the surface with a light grit (so that it's not super smooth) will help the paint to stick. Also, several coats within the recommended paint/repaint dry times was helpful. Another youtuber recommended a clear coat over the spray. So far on the KLR the paint has held strong except for where there has been serious scratches/scrapes.
I've only ever had a KLR for a dirt bike, and I assume checking the timing is different for different bikes. I'd wait a week after painting before you get serious with riding it. The nice thing about spray painting a bike like this is that if it chips (it's tough stuff, but it still chips on a hard crash) then you can just touch it up with a little spray here and there. If it gets to the point where it starts to look ugly/oversprayed, then you can take off the plastics, sand, and paint again. :)
Man the old crappy 90s ones are the best because you can kick the crap out of them and never feel bad ;) If you plan to be on dirt, may I HIGHLY recommend the DRZ... it's a little honeybadger! For longer trips or commutes though, the KLR is MUCH better. They both get similar MPG. Oh, and by the way, I might be changing the name of the KLR from "tractor" to "warhorse" as per your suggestion! :D
I do. I love this bike! Check out the description and a few of my other videos and you'll see that this bike is like another family member to me. Not everybody puts the time and effort into the initial paint job like I did. If the KLR was a dog it would be a loyal basset hound: ugly, lives forever, useful, but still worth taking care of on the inside. It's certainly no show poodle.
Yep. This is awesome. My Honda Transalp needs the same kind of relaxed paint job like this. Maybe when I'm done I'll post a vid. Thanks for this. It's the tutorial I was looking for amidst the overdone millions of others. Cheers.
My KLR is subdued (all black and dark gray). For painting stuff that gets hot, I use black high-temp engine paint, or fireplace/stove paint. Tough, chip-resistant, and doesn’t care about heat.
ColoradoDualSport this video was my first experience with the man, the myth, the Batcho Libre spawn of an over-fed post-Thanksgiving dinner dogpile mishap (hope that's not offensive mr. T!). Ever since then, I've been enjoying the videos from this rascal I now call friend. Enjoy man!
I just hit this point on my eveRide journey though the ages. Sadly I haven't had much free video watching time so my progress has been slow. But, hey, it's a KLR, it'll be just fine until I can get to it. HAHAH!
Very cool man! I checked out the vids and didn't see a finished product. Let me know! I'd love to see it! I saw a sand-camo painted 09 the other day and thought it looked AWESOME!
I have a 67 TC250 that I rebuilt and painted. I painted the engine with matte black BBQ paint and the exhaust with VHM Flame Proof paint. The BBQ paint is really cheap and works 100% with no issues at all. The VHM paint also works well but a little more pricey. I used it on a properly prepared chrome surface but the paint still scrapes off if rubbed with a boot or zipper. I'll be using the BBQ paint o my KLR engine, as well as trying out this truck bed liner. - Does it scrape off?
I did almost the same thing, used fusion silver, masked out the decals, carefully pushed in the tape along the edges then cut it along the decals. Painted the plastics two coats, removed the masking tape and I still have my decals!! What was Kawasaki thinking on a silver tank and green plastics anyway? Great Vid!
Great message... Yeah my 94 XR 650 l had the ridiculously stupid paint scheme.. but carefully painting the plastic has helped.. anyhow, your klr looks great.. love it.... Robert jr NJ here Asbury Park
I certainly haven't done the cruise control thing... but it sounds cool! Man there's nothing like a dual sport, but don't neglect the cruiser! I love V-stars. I've been riding on MrRojoNeck's 2012 KLR and I seriously love the thing. He might have a hard time getting it back from me when he and DuhFactor are done with the DRZ.
Could you tell me the exact name of your bike including the year. I'm brand new to bikes, as in I just started looking into them this morning but Im starting to like the klr model. Just trynna learn some more about them thanks
Thanks for the tips. I painted my XR650L about 6 months ago after watching this. I made a quick walk around video and gave you credit in the description.
Hey there, am curious if you are using a aftermarket plastic tank. I just got a drz and was gona tidy the old coversets. I also had the Safari tank, which alot of peeps mentioned the material itself was vaporous, leading to bubbled pain or for some reason it won't stay. Was hoping I could learn a thing or two if you are on the same plastic tank setup.
I'm thinking of getting a DR some day for more local riding. I rode my brother's and it felt great. The KLR is huge and gets the job done in almost every way, but the DR is so nimble comparatively. Both are great bikes! Nice paint job man!
Just got mine a month ago and its faded red from the California sun. Thinking of doing something like this in the summer. Right now it is entirely to wet out. Live in the PNW.
Is your tank the stock OEM tank or is that one of those IMS tanks ? I’m trying to paint my tank but I don’t know if the truck liner will turn out well on the metal tank
Hey, I really like that. When I scrape up my new 2016, I think I will do this. I'm curious ... you seem like you are about my size and build. Are your feet flat on the ground when sitting on your KLR? The balls of my feet are on the ground, but I don't want to lower it and lose ground clearance.
I’m planning on doing this with my KLR because I think it looks amazing!! 🙌🏼 With the truck bed coating, did you have any issues with the screw holes or any small parts getting plugged up?
That KLR is UHREEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL CLEAAAAAAAAN!!!!! God damn.... I must do this.... You have inspired me.... I just have one question... Did you have to take your tank off??
Yeah I took everything apart before I painted it. Plastics, tank, all that stuff was on the ground and coated a few times. However, the paint is STILL going strong, even in the desert sun!
Dope that's what I planned on... Now I just gotta see if anyone has down the liner on a metal tank... I'm assuming I could sand it down, primer and spray and it should hold
i just bought a 2005 KLR, it's red and pretty scratched up so i was planning on painting it..i was thinking a hunter green...but you're idea might sway me to your color scheme..Why is it that people only do this to KLR's? No one seems to do this to DR's or or any other dual sport, not on youtube anyway..what is it about the KLR that makes people do this to the KLR? I find it interesting but it makes me glad i bought one.
Great vid. I like your gung-ho attitude towards painting, although I would probably have taken the saddlebags off. Here's a quick tip to open any can of spray paint: Loosely bang the side of the cap against any edge. If you plan on using the whole can, don't worry about the "loosely" part. I found your vid because I plan to paint my '87 Bronco II in Krylon 'Sand' and wanted to see how the paint looked. I'm now a huge fan of your wipe-n-paint cleaning method =)
Does your krylon chip off after a little while? Mine only lasts like 6 months, and that is with riding it a lot on paved roads. I barely take It off road. But it looks like I've laid the thing down 20 times and then have to repaint it. I might just get a vinyl kit. I'm losing brain cells from that good krylon $h!t 🥴
Thank you very much! To paint it like I did the first time it requires taking off all the plastics and tank--then letting the paint cure for a week. I can't bare not to ride it for a week, even when it's ice cold outside :)
Oh my gods, I knew I know you from somewhere, today I ++subscribed to your channel and got that feeling - hey I know this guy... Obviously from my prior KLR researches, neat!
It was actually Kalani who coined the name warhorse once, I really like it as well lol. As for them tractors - search on youtube for combichrist - tractor, never mind the music if your taste differs but them lyrics are nothing short of describing a KLR650 - try to get that out of your head next time you ride it, good luck!
haha, I saw this after inheriting my bro's '93, that's literally sitting in his backyard (in Maine) for 3-4 years; no juice, no charge - fired right up haha. Did you use the "Krylon" Vinyl paint for the seat? And I've been sanding and priming all my stuff after seeing your chips, assuming you didn't do that? What about a clear coat, or clear "Matte" coat on any of it? cheers & thanks.
You know it's kinda wild, but I sold that bike. It has been sitting in the hot desert sun for nearly a year and the paint is still holding strong where it hasn't been scratched. It's tough stuff!
one of these days my dr650 will look like that. the only reason i painted mine the way i did was because i needed the practice and thebike made a nice canvas
I loved the video, thought the colors were a good choice too, but I think I heard you say something about using wd40 on your chain. Basically oils come in two types, penetrating and lubricating. The penetrating variety will get in there, dissolve some of the gunk, and free things up so that they can move. But, after they dry, they leave no real amount of lubricating oil behind, and can result in ALOT of wear. WD40 is a penetrating oil. Use chainsaw bar oil, or even motoroil, its much better.
It's the KLR mentality I think. You know what though? I've got a bright yellow DRZ400 that needs re-coloring. I think it's going to end up looking a LOT better after I'm done with it.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!Out standing!!! Who Gives a RATS ASS its a KLR!!!! Thats My Line also!! I think it Looks Great!! Most will not understand the KLR thing!! But you do!! True Spirit of the KLR riders!! Hilarious vid I'm Fav ing it!!
your better off waiting the week for it to dry, I only waited a couple of days for mine to dry, and it ended up chipping so bad I did the whole thing again , then I waited a week and I had no chips since, just 1 or 2 tiny ones. the hardest part is not driving for a week, I tried to avoid driving off road to for about a week just to be on the safe side.
+World Scum Yeah I was very cautious the first time I painted it. It's been almost 5 years now and most of the original paint is still going strong other than the places where I have crashed it, and even then it's not too bad. A few re-coats would make it look like new again... the Krylon is good stuff!
Marcos Gil Umm... that's kinda top secret at the moment. I hadn't used this bike for a very long time because I sold it to my brother in law for the last 2 years. It happens to be back, though, and better than ever!
@eveRideorg Yes, it makes me want a KLR. I've been in an unfortunate motorcycle-less situation for a while, but I hope to change that soon. A KLR is definitely on my list, for just that reason!
Supertetor Yeah that's a Stearns or Coleman seat cover... they can usually be found at WalMart for $20. Really, though... I'd snag a Seat Concepts seat. They're not too expensive and are WAYYYY better than stock. I just did 5000 miles over 3 weeks on a Seat Concepts and it was quite pleasant! I couldn't do more than an hour on this seat in a day, even with the cover :)
Prepping with sand paper was a key. Giving the paint a surface to hold on to. Hilarious! Mr. Papa EveRide. Thanks for the chuckles. New to the KLR world. The V-Star classic could be spending more time in the Garage this year. About to hit the roads and trails with a 2012 KLR, And some interesting ideas with your vids. Have you tried the 25 cent cruisecontrol mod using a zip tie?
If you have any friends who ride, see if they will teach you with their bikes... I taught my wife to ride on a little 250 in a grass field and she picked it up pretty quick. If you're in the US, maybe check out a MSF course?
Thanks, I was looking for a way to get paint on my bags.
you should leave that to the professionals
It's just a good reminder to anybody who might take their bike too seriously. I love this bike because it's meant to be abused, dropped, crashed, etc. When I dropped my old VS800 I felt sick for days. When I drop this, I just laugh, pick it up, and get on my way. That's the beauty of a KLR.

BBQ paint... genius! I have beaten up the truck bed liner pretty good... not a scratch. The stuff is super durable. Good luck man!

I like the look, and its an easy way to update older or mismatched plastics
I enjoy your "straight up" videos
I bought a '96 KLR 250 a few weeks ago in the Barbie colors. 2,200 miles on it. No way I'd paint that beauty :)
2,200 miles? wow that's rare. Our 93 came with 33k
kiraanimerawr1 j
I've got a 95' Barbie colors, pristine with 1900 miles. Just flipped over 2k on it.
"And I'm just gona pour petrol all over it, stand back and throw a match at it. And you can do that - because it's a KLR"
Or give it to me because... it’s a KLR
My KLR is subdued (all black and dark gray). For painting stuff that gets hot, I use black high-temp engine paint, or fireplace/stove paint. Tough, chip-resistant, and doesn’t care about heat.
Next time you strip and paint metal... use Aircraft Stripper... it'll take the paint and stickers off no problem. Really saves the elbows.
Awesome tip! Thumbed it up and thanks!

Ehh, just drop the bag, it'll be fine! Love it man! That is exactly what KLR's were made for. Rigged up just how you want them to be.
Ps. I'm glad you fixed your audio. :-) No more tunnel effect.
People who see them as anything other than utilitarian beasts of burden are probably better off with BMWs.
Very cool man! I checked out the vids and didn't see a finished product. Let me know! I'd love to see it! I saw a sand-camo painted 09 the other day and thought it looked AWESOME!
YES! I'm so glad you get this! Dual Sport motorcycles aren't trophies, they're mules!
I think it would still work fine. I've seen a few newer KLRs with the paint scheme and they look AWESOME!
LOL, I was like, "What's he going to do with that bag?" And then FLOP, right down on the wet paint! Good job!
I have a 67 TC250 that I rebuilt and painted. I painted the engine with matte black BBQ paint and the exhaust with VHM Flame Proof paint. cuz its a KLR.. you are a good man. thanks for the video and the good laughs. Happy trails friend!
Very cool man, i like the color.
Cool color combo deff has that army look
I've been trying to decide how to paint my KLR and I think this is it.

Did you get a bike?
Great job. I am doing the same thing to my KLR. Just the plastic for now. The fusion paint works great.
DUDE, The color looks good.Better than lime green.
Thanks for the tips. I painted my XR650L about 6 months ago after watching this. I made a quick walk around video and gave you credit in the description.
Thanks! Hopefully the Krylon stuck as well as it did on my old KLR. I'll check out your channel.
Yup. That how to get'er done.
I like it!
Hey mister man , where is your videos for the rebuild of your klr??? I cant find them.
+NIGHTWING I believe those are on Mr. Duhfactor's channel. Check i tout! ruclips.net/user/MrDuhfactorplaylists?sort=dd&view=50&shelf_id=8

the indention on the paint lid, use your thumb and pointer finger to pinch the top of lid. Works for me and you wouldn't expect it to.
I have a street glide and Wana get a klr been wanting to get into adventure stuff even though it's all ways an adventure on any bike!
I'm thinking of getting a DR some day for more local riding. I rode my brother's and it felt great. The KLR is huge and gets the job done in almost every way, but the DR is so nimble comparatively. Both are great bikes! Nice paint job man!
Well in my own opinion I think the bike is beautiful. :)
Just got mine a month ago and its faded red from the California sun. Thinking of doing something like this in the summer. Right now it is entirely to wet out. Live in the PNW.
+Outdoorsnomad 03 While there's a lot of water in the PNW, I am forever jealous of the trees and trails you guys have!
How many cans did you use to get the whole thing and did you also paint the inside?
Dude, you rock! Great video.
Is your tank the stock OEM tank or is that one of those IMS tanks ? I’m trying to paint my tank but I don’t know if the truck liner will turn out well on the metal tank
Do u know the gray/ silver color used to touch up most dirt bike frames doing a CRF 250 swing arm. Thanks. Great job!!!!!
Ah man I don't know... but you could try a few different paints and see what matches? Hopefully it all goes well sir!
eveRide ADV Thanks Bud, I found a Gun Medal made by VHT engine paint and came out Incredible....
@koehlerkevin Bwaha! Yeah.. can't be too careful with a KLR!
I know this is an old post, but how did you get the seat that color? did you just buy a new seat?
That is a fantastic idea. Spray job 2.0 will be happening soon with my wife's DRZ... we're still picking out the color she wants :D
How many cans did you use to get the job done?
I was thinking 2-3 but I can't get this paint locally so I have to have it shipped.
Montell Holder-Smith I think that it took me 4 cans, and I did several coats on most parts. 3 would probably do it just fine! Good luck, sir!
Gonna rhino line or do some sort of bed liner on my bike on Monday. I'll make a video of how it turned out!
+KiwiCruiser RIght on! I dig the flat black of the truck bed liner!

Great vid. I like your gung-ho attitude towards painting, although I would probably have taken the saddlebags off. Here's a quick tip to open any can of spray paint:
Loosely bang the side of the cap against any edge. If you plan on using the whole can, don't worry about the "loosely" part.
I found your vid because I plan to paint my '87 Bronco II in Krylon 'Sand' and wanted to see how the paint looked. I'm now a huge fan of your wipe-n-paint cleaning method =)
My spray can lids tend to go flying across the driveway when I try to remove them.
Dude... You make me laugh!!! And your right! "It's a KLR"...... :)
:) Truthfully any motorcycle is just a motorcycle. If you own it, might as well enjoy it, right? :)
Oh my gods, I knew I know you from somewhere, today I ++subscribed to your channel and got that feeling - hey I know this guy... Obviously from my prior KLR researches, neat!
Why don't you use clear paint protector?
It was actually Kalani who coined the name warhorse once, I really like it as well lol. As for them tractors - search on youtube for combichrist - tractor, never mind the music if your taste differs but them lyrics are nothing short of describing a KLR650 - try to get that out of your head next time you ride it, good luck!
Awesome man, I think I'm painting mine this year. :P
It's successfull because you already painted the whole bike with the same color, right?
haha, I saw this after inheriting my bro's '93, that's literally sitting in his backyard (in Maine) for 3-4 years; no juice, no charge - fired right up haha. Did you use the "Krylon" Vinyl paint for the seat? And I've been sanding and priming all my stuff after seeing your chips, assuming you didn't do that? What about a clear coat, or clear "Matte" coat on any of it? cheers & thanks.
That's how i paint my DR 650.... :)
How well does the bed liner hold up against gas spills on the tank?
I dumped the bike plenty of times and had gas on it quite a few times, but never had any problems. Pretty decent stuff!
thanks for posting this
Final wipe before spraying with 70% isopropyl alcohol. It removes oils, dust, grime etc....and is an adhesion promoter for the paint. Works great.
How well does the Krylon hold up to scratches from branches etc? Thanks
march11stoneytony I've still got the original paint on there several years (and several crashes) later and it's holding up well!
eveRide ADV awesome! Thanks!
march11stoneytony
how durable has this turned out to be? I'm having commitment problems with mine. Worried I'm going to regret it!
You could always do plastidip and just peel it off when you're done
because it's a KLR...love it. Maybe would have taken off the bags before paint, but very amusing commenst. Thanks for posting
Do you sand it if it's glossy or sand it no matter what?
Really enjoyed the video, sharing on FB.
I am literally sitting next to all my plastics from my KLR, did the paint peel at all after you painted it?
You know it's kinda wild, but I sold that bike. It has been sitting in the hot desert sun for nearly a year and the paint is still holding strong where it hasn't been scratched. It's tough stuff!
will gasoline dissolve the Krylon Fusion paint ?
one of these days my dr650 will look like that. the only reason i painted mine the way i did was because i needed the practice and thebike made a nice canvas
Oh my God was your Klr one of those teal jobs from the eighties?
Bigwoo hahahahaha
I loved the video, thought the colors were a good choice too, but I think I heard you say something about using wd40 on your chain. Basically oils come in two types, penetrating and lubricating. lol great video, awesome ending :P "it's a KLR... HEHAEHAEHAHEAEHAEHA!"
that was funny as hell!!

Wow, looks great! I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the same thing when I get a KLR. I wonder how hard it would be to paint the metal parts of the bike?
I haven't tried the metal parts other than the tank... but if I ever re-build a KLR, I think I might bed-liner the frame and metal bits.
I personally would top it off with some satin clear coat to just give the krylon some extra protection.
Bam...Just like new!
I hear ya. My KLR looks like it went through a war. :)
Awesome! It's a KLR and you can us truck bed lining. haha!
Damn I want to get a bike like this but don't even know how to ride a bike yet!
If you have any friends who ride, see if they will teach you with their bikes... I taught my wife to ride on a little 250 in a grass field and she picked it up pretty quick. If you're in the US, maybe check out a MSF course?
Love it...
