    Dan you are amazing designer, it is a pleasure to even look at this tent. It is great you decided to keep both doors (I was worried they will be sacrificed). I hope you have some plans for next year of making a kill and introduce it in 1P version as well. If I count correctly you shaved off around 437g from 2P (hats off), so assuming you can save around 300g on 1P, it would weight 525g. Cannot wait... :-)

      I don't know if 1/2 kg is an important weight factor. What IS important is one hand close up, 4 peg stakeout, 2 pole design, tight tub floor, and steep angles. Add to that width and length and small pack size and it's a winner. Great job. Wish I could afford one.

      I have a duplex and have been waiting for this thinking I’d make the change, but there’s no way. A nylon floor at that price? No. And now I have to carry a ground cloth when I don’t with my duplex. The floor misses the mark and ruins the tent, especially for the cost.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  2 года назад +12

      @@andilowry5784 The 15D nylon floor is at least as durable as the 1.0oz floor in your Duplex. That 1.0oz DCF is very strong, but definitely more prone to abrasion and punctures than a 15D nylon, and those are the main stresses on a floor.
      The key advantage of the woven floor is a way smaller packed size. The Duplex is literally 50% more bulky (500 cu in vs 340) because of that floor which doesn't even improve durability. Also while DCF is super waterproof, it does form microholes from abrasions, so the the nylon is more waterproof overall.
      So you're basically getting a more durable, more waterproof, and more compact floor.
      As for the cost, yes nylon saves cost but other aspects of this add cost so it's not a cheaper to make tent than the Duplex. The Duplex is sewn construction which is way cheaper and less good than hot bonding, and it is a smaller tent so it has less DCF.

      @@durstongear and anyone else coming into these comments. I don’t know Dan but followed his original 1p design on drop for a while. He would always comment back and answer any questions some one had. Anywhere he would answer questions even over on section hiker. When his pack first went on drop I asked if I should get something else vrs his pack. He gave excellent reasons and answers for why I should and would do well with the other pack vrs his. On any podcast I’ve heard him on like backpacker radio or on with Jeremiah and JK he was awesome to listen to. Knowing this dude went out and blazed some trail for Justin Outdoors on the GDT last year. He just seems like an awesome dude and his knowledge of his products and the reasons he has done what he has done with his gear is just simply amazing. I can not say enough good things about a dude I don’t even know but has an impeccable reputation! I love using my 1p version and would definitely purchase this 2p version once able. Dan knows his gear and has the answers to why he has done what he’s done so if 15d was acceptable to him vrs 1.0oz dyneema you can trust it!

    Please make a double-walled tent with a dyneema exterior and a 50 inch wide floor. You know, something between the x-mid 2 and the x-mid 2 pro. As far as I can tell, tarptent has the lightest double walled 2-person tent. But their pitch is really awkward and troublesome. You are so close to making the perfect tent for me!

      I like the idea of this but with about twice as much dyneema what would you guys think the price would be? Roughly.

    • @amythinks
      @amythinks Год назад

      @@dgriffo1369 That's a good point. But honestly, cost-of-materials is like the smallest factor in price. Design hours, marketing, paying human beings for their time is the true cost. But as it is Dyneema, sellers definitely try to capitalize on mark ups.

    • @0verfiend
      @0verfiend Год назад +2

      Well if it’s a double wall, he could just offer each part in multiple fabrics, maybe even with the ability to buy them in parts or modular. I mean hypothetically. I know it’s not realistic. But maybe some combination or modular options will be in the future. Like a mesh inner and dyneema outer. Or dyneema both. Or polyester or nylon outer wi5 dyneema floor, or vice versa. Or maybe even just to replace stuff that’s damaged without having to buy an entire package. Anyway looks like they are all selling well, so I’m sure we will see something new, whatever it is.
      Great work.

    • @amythinks
      @amythinks Год назад

      @@0verfiend The appeal of something like this is the light-weight aspect. If it's not full Dyneema, it loses its marketing punch. Also, I don't think Dursten is the kind of company to keep lots of skus. They're going to do a few things really well. Too many options are really hard on small companies. Personally, I wouldn't buy it unless it were full Dyneema. And if we're talking just materials cost, while Dyneema is expensive, it's not going to be the lion-share of the cost. The cost of doing business is much more than materials.

    My goodness does this design just make me giddy. Congratulations on bringing legitimate innovation to the tent game and designing what looks to be a spectacular tent that checks all of the boxes without sacrificing anything! As a proud owner of the 1p and 2p, it's not likely in the cards for a purchase, but when the time comes for a single-walled DCF tent it 100% is at the top of the list, and it doesn't really even seem close.

      Dan - not sure if you’ll see this reply, but I wanted to let you know I received my X-Mid Pro 2P today. Despite how high my hopes were, it far EXCEEDS my expectations. I can’t believe how simple it is to pitch. I can’t believe how much functional headroom there is the way the peak runs across the entire structure unlike other tents whose usable headroom is limited to the few inches at the peak of the pole. I’m 6’1” and have tons of headroom in this tent. That’s the biggest surprise for me. I can’t believe the attention to detail. Even the floor is taut and everything just lines up perfectly. 4 stakes is really all you need, and I staked out the two doors with some small stakes just to keep the vestibule taut when the doors are open. I can open and close the tent with one hand. This thing is unreal. And all for only 20 ounces. Thank you for designing and building this. It will make my trips even that much more enjoyable. I think it’s certainly the best tent design I’ve ever used.

    Ideas for improvements // Maybe Dan will see it :)
    1) Higher bathtub walls and/or to continue into a thin solid side wall panel for around a feet of hight, so less wind will blow inside.
    2) A small piece of fabric to cover a bit and protect the bottom end of the outer zippers, so it does not get damaged by abrasion from the ground.
    3) A small loop from elastic or solid cord attached to each of both peaks and hanging to inside so a longer cord can be attached between them to hang small pieces of equipment under the roof, like a headlamp, shirt or socks to dry etc. A quick solution would be to stick on the inside side of the peaks patches with small loops like those Zpacks is selling.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  Год назад +4

      Thanks for your feedback.
      1)With the X-Mid Pro 2 the fly comes lower to the ground than most tents so it already blocks wind better. Most tents have a higher bathtub also a much bigger gap below the fly. By making the fly come lower it shelters the vestibules more and already does a good job blocking wind.
      2) We have never seen abrasion on the bottom of the zipper in any of our tents. I don't think there is a problem to fix here.
      3) Yes we could add a hang loop. We have these in our other tent models. The Pro is lighter so it doesn't have as many features, but we might add these - although most people don't want them so it is lighter to just add the stick on ones if people want them.

    After a LONG time of searching and comparing I finally landed on the Mid-x 2p. I finally found a double wall with enough room and light enough, and now you have me here. Considering a single wall tent. Never did I ever think that would happen. LOL! Great build! would be nice to see a bit more of the interior where the mesh meets the exterior. though. To see how many and how much exterior walls are directly exposed without mesh.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  2 года назад +1

      The mesh connections are carefully designed to be a functional as possible. There are full door walls on the vestibule sides, and then short mesh sections that connect the top edge of the bathtub floor to the bottom edge of the fly. That acts as a gear shelf and means condensation won't drain to the floor area. The fly is also a 'full coverage' fly which means it extends pretty much right to the ground, so it does a really good job of blocking rain splatter/exposure/drafts.

The fact that both tents have met and exceeded all of their design and performance goals during the last two seasons has made the decision to purchase the Pro 2 an easy one. I'll be looking forward to the Pro 2's arrival!

    I have an original X-MID 1 and it is the most innovative tent I've ever owned. My only two critiques were that it was restrictively narrow and constructed with heavier material. Both of those concerns are addressed here. The easy, DRY setup is invaluable. This looks like an utralight grail tent.

    Every time I see some killer AF ultra light tent I am interested.....until I see the price. Then I am reminded why my Tarptent Protrail Li just cant be beat. Did AT thru hike in 21 and had no problems that would make me come off more than double to cost. Great looking tent. If money was no object I would consider.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  2 года назад +1

      I don't think this is double the cost of your Protrail Li. The Protrail Li today is $529, so the X-Mid Pro 2 is actually a good value at $639 considering it's a 2P tent (vs 1P) and quite a bit larger with a lot more DCF. DCF is really expensive and has only gone up in price since you got yours, so yours was probably less than the current price but still over $400 and not half the cost of the X-Mid Pro 2.
      The Protrail is a nice tent, but the Pro has a lot of advantages like a ton more space, headroom, and vestibule room. Dual doorways, dual large vents, no poles in the doorway, simpler pitch etc.

    • @durstongear

      @@jeffozimek2178 It comes with regular cord. That plus DCF works quite well in high winds, but ironwire is even better in high winds and is noticably better under snowloads where the sheer weight of the snow stretches out regular cord.

    Must have watched about half a dozen videos where this tent is either in use or being reviewed. Even one's that listed things they didn't like had no real deal breakers for me. It ticks all my 'what I most want in a tent' boxes and the sad thing is that they sell so quickly :.) . Fingers crossed by this time next year, which is when the department of work and pensions say I can retire, then by then I will have taken out a mortgage and can buy one - eithert that or a packet of Ramen Noodles.... whichever cost less going by current rates of inflation.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comments. We recommend the X-Mid Pro 2 up to 6'4" when used with two people but with a solo occupant it does work for a much taller person. The parallelogram shaped floor gives one diagonal that is very long - moreso than almost any other tent - so we recommend it up to about 7'0" with a solo occupant.
