- Terry Evans personal footage of 1966 Daytona. Converted from super 8 to vhs to dvd to this.
"As an original Cobra owner I was lucky enough to be in Florida for the 1966 Daytona Continental and 12 Hours of Sebring because of my job at JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Pasadena, California. I was on temporary assignment at the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral. After watching "Ford v Ferrari" the first thing I did was watch my personal DVD of Daytona and Sebring, the next thing was check the internet for the results at Daytona because the finish in the film did not reflect my memory. The Ken Miles/Lloyd Ruby Ford Mark II at 678 laps was 8 laps ahead of the Dan Gurney/Jerry Grant Ford Mark II, and 9 laps ahead of the Walt Hansgen/Mark Donohue Ford Mark II.
Some general observations of the 1966 Daytona Continental. Prior to the race there were many articles in the local papers about the upcoming race and the one I remember most was in testing the Ford Mark II they found that when the cars came off the banking at 170 mph and into the infield road course slowing to 35 mph the wheel base shortened by one inch under braking.
It seemed to me that prior to the race there were more people on the starting grid than were in the grand stands. In the middle of the night there was no one in the grand stands
During the night the temperatures got down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit, I spent a lot of time in line at the infield cafeteria, going in getting a couple of donuts and coffee, nursing same, then leaving, REPEAT.
One other thing that counter to "Ford v Ferrari" the pits were extremely primitive compared to the ones in the film. I read that they used the pits at Fontana which is a modern racing facility.
In the middle of the night I was wandering around the pit area and someone called my name so I turned around and it was Lew Spencer of Carroll Shelby and Lew Spencer's Hi-Performance Motors in Los Angeles. I had only met him a few times in 1964 and was surprised he remembered me.
