    Bro, get yourself a better lighting setup and back drop asap. Make the investment. I’m not saying this to be disrespectful, but the contrary - you are clearly very smart and well spoken and could probably speed run to more viewership by doing the (unfortunately) necessary aesthetic upgrades to have that professional studio feel. I’m not sure how much you care so obviously you do what effort allows, but I can genuinely say that I stumbled upon this video and was not expecting much.. little to no views, low lit - but was quickly won over by an extremely well articulated and thought provoking take on the movie and other themes discussed.
    You’re good. Treat yo’ self and get that fancy setup cuh

      Thank you. I know it doesn't look the best. I'm trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, and I know the current setup doesn't lmao. I have some plans for lighting in the future and I'm trying to figure out how I want everything like the camera placement, where I'm filming, my background. That all will come in time but my main focus right now is trying to make the content and what I talk about enjoyable. Thank you again for the feedback it's extremely helpful.

    I was tentatively interested with the idea of this movie when I saw the trailer and I was kind of itching to hear other people’s thoughts. As a white queer writer I love seeing media that talks about other media while interrogating it’s purposes etc. etc. (nerd stuff). So I was kind of excited to see a movie that appeared to comedically tackle a really prevalent troupe. But it sucks they went more formulaic with the plot in this movie? It’s such an provocative idea I feel like trying to make it more ‘pallettable’(?) may end up alienating more viewers. Excited to see the conversations/critiques around it when it does come out lol

Saw the teaser in front of a trailer for Outlaw Johnny Black, and was like “yo that sounds good” but then say the trailer..
    my main issue with the American society movie is that it doesn’t look like what it should be. Why is it a romance film with the black hogwarts thing as the backdrop? I was expecting some funny ass commentary, but it looks like an earnest attempt at a romance film?

    I generally thought this movie was going to be a comedic one abt magical black ppl that's it. With like little black comedic anecdotes (jives,etc) here and there. Evb was saying black harry potter black harry potter, but I'm like huh? I thought this was gonna just be like a funny school society thing with magical black ppl I didn't rlly see how they got harry potter, still don't honestly. If anything going off of what I first thought it would be more like black umbrella academy. Not just one in your face all abt them protagonist like a good group. Rlly like again Hargreeves ahs : coven esque but all black. I guess it's all the same, or similar enough but, eh. I did skip the trailer after some seconds so this could be why but thinking what I thought abt it, it was kinda sad ish to me that someone darker like a dark skin or brown skin in general didn't show up right away. And if it needed to rlly follow one main protagonist for all of that they could at least be brownskin/darkskin idk thats just me. My only real complaint before I started seeing ppl down talking it was negroes. Idk, besides nobody liking it bc its not giving what's it's spose to and its downright icky, was that it "had to be" called negroes. To me, it's just odd it's 2024 and it just doesn't seem all that right or necessary even. who even uses that to address black ppl anymore w/o the micro aggressive tone or negatively connotated in general. It was just like all the wrong ppl that will use colored or blacks or the blacks when they could literally just say AA or black ppl it's not that hard. Thanks for the video tho bc I've been wanting someone to explain well and briefly (in a shorter video n all that) so I could truly understand where the hate and backlash is coming from. This was rlly something I wanted to watch, which is sad cuz idk if I would want to watch it now hopefully tho this could be done again and better and what we all actually expected, like very self explanatory an actual academy institution society (w.e) for magical negro that's it. Little bit of comedy here whatever whatever a good all black movie. I will say tho, it's tiring getting a black movie greenlit and promoted esp to the GP+ and it has to be watered down, "palatable", or generally under categories it shouldnt be esp when you analyze it and it's taking on certain things. Or it ends up like this. It rlly sucks that this isn't what it could've been esp when American fiction just happened and he was in it too (Jeffrey wright), and then there's things like Atlanta and others that also happened previous years. Jmt, again great video🖤

    The American Society of Magical Negroes really gave me a glimpse into what it's like being Black in today's America. It nailed those subtle workplace and everyday microaggressions we often overlook. And sure, some parts were funny, but they missed the mark on a few jokes. Plus, the main character felt a bit one-dimensional. Why so timid? Where are his pals? I wanted more backstory on everyone. But hey, maybe that was the point - to show how the 'magical negro' trope falls flat in real life. Overall, it's a thought-provoking flick that could've dug a bit deeper into its characters. I will give this a 6/10

    So say Hallorann from the shining and john coffee didnt have self preservation is literally insane to me, “theyre just 2-dimensional characters who only serve to help the white main characters”. You are very clearly being willfully ignorant and cherry picking because John Coffee is such a complex character and literally the best thing about the movie, he wanted to die because he was a literal angel with so much empathy and heart that he was suffering because he could feel all the hate in the world. I grew up watching that film and it had a huge impact on my life, to write it off as a white author following a racist trope comes off as nothing but brain rot. Oh no! The best character that everyone loves is the black guy! How racist! Ya goofy. And Hollorann??? He couldnt just go to the police and say “the little boy is speaking to me with his mind and theirs evil spirits in the hotel, could u go check on them?”. He was literally the only person who could have helped, did you just want him to do nothing???

    • @xovstheworld
      @xovstheworld  6 месяцев назад +1

      Dick Hallorann lives in the book. He had no reason to die in the movie. And magical negroes don't always have to be intentional. I don't think anyone goes, "Ah yes, I'm going to create this character to specifcally follow a racist trope." And at the end of the day whether he was a good character that people love or not, John Coffee is still a magical negro. He's the textbook definition of one.

    • @SoloCrafter378
      @SoloCrafter378 6 месяцев назад

      @@xovstheworld what does that even mean “whether he was a good character that people love or not john coffee is still a magical negro” you cant just say its racist just because. Authors are going to write main characters that they relate to and more often than not theyre white because they are. Look at jordan peele, notify me when he drops a movie about a white person, or spike lee, or donald glover. Im not saying its unheard of to write a main character thats not your own race but it usually will be because authors write about themselves and their experience because thats what theyre most inspired by. And i know this is a wild concept, but out of all the “tropes” a black person can be in a white persons story, being the “magical one” that everyone loves and adores isnt the worst thing in the world.

    I thought the trailer for this movie looked funny. David Allen Greer, Nicole Byers, yes please. A lot of people who are angry with the concept of the movie don’t seem to understand the magical negro trope. I see this as not a movie taking place in real life, but within the universe of American cinema itself. I saw another video that described the plot and terrible writing, though. It seems to me that the biggest problem is that it’s NOT a movie about the magical negro trope. It’s a movie about the black best friend trope, which is more like the gay best friend trope. Side note: I’m noticing a lot of ironic outrage from the “it’s just a joke” and “I like dark humor” crowd. So you like dark humor, until the dark joke is that white people need to be placated at all times to avoid violence against black people? 🤔 side side note: I was also surprised to hear she wasn’t white. When you said she was a person of color, I said, “WHAT color? Griege?”

    I went to go watch the trailer half-way through the video before you critiqued and expected a black Harry Potter trailer. Clearly my expectations for a black led fantasy/supernatural movie were far too high. The romance sub-plot really throws off the entire concept and the overall vibe was definitely uncomfortable in the way you described. Won't be hate watching it either.

    I would disagree with your thoughts around John Coffey and the Green Mile. The guards ask John if he would like them to help him escape, and he says No, I'm done living with all the hate and hurt in the world. So they let him go through with it. I guess I can't understand what you think would be a better outcome for him. If he had escaped, he would have been hunted down and probably had an even worse death. What kind of self-preservation would have worked for John?

      @chasrn64 can't forget about the fact that he brought something back from the dead. Also it doesn't really matter, at the end of the day he's the definition of a magical negro.

    in the green mile i got the feeling that john coffee was more of a angel or a god archetype manifesting a human and thats y he sacrificed himself and less of the tope wdyt?

    • @xovstheworld
      @xovstheworld  6 месяцев назад +2

      I think with that you could say he's even more if a magical negro. Because an angel or a God manifested as a black man and took on so much pain and hurt to help the white characters.
      You can kind of argue the same thing about Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty, but not to the same degree because God isn't suffering or losing anything because of helping Bruce or Evan. That's just my opinion.

    From the title and previews I've seen it just seems like it's having a go at white peoples stereotypical racism towards blacks by using stereotypical black racism towards white people in a way that the writers thought was some kinda comically racist irony but completely fail and just made some horribly racist woke trash. If it was the other way round the uproar about how racist it is would be deafening.
    Maybe it was made with the misguided premise that black people can't be racist. 🙄
    And like ya say, I don't know who it's made for as it seems offensive and degrading to black people as well. What a friggin joke. 🤷‍♂🙄

    Pretty sure there are way more "magical white people" in entertainment and that's not considered racist or condescending. Even when it's something like the kid in Powder or any other number of films.

      Do you understand that roles for black people are already limited? So if the roles they are cast in are magical spiritual stereotypes that's messed messed up. You can't say the same thing about white people.
