There decendants who are located every where but you can find specific influence in certain towns. For example, Corsicans in Yauco. Corsicans were well known in PR for the cultivation of Coffee crops. Another example the French influence of Mayaguez alot of French migrated to the western part of PR after the Hatian slave revolt.

Now there were 31 different tribes brought to this island and according to what century or time and what politics was going on in Africa you can determine what kind of West African or Central African tribes were brought to the island. Lo que sucede es que en el caso primero esa clave está presente en otros patrones rítmicos, a veces melodicos o de cuerdas, mientras que en el segundo caso la clave ya estaba presente en los ritmos africanos y eran claves con una pulsacion ritmica ternaria y pasa a ser binaria al pasar a la musica popular cubana. Otra cosa que se debe decir, y es que en el Seis Moruno jíbaro está presente el ´tumbao´ en clave 2:3, asunto que etno musicólogos han estudiado ampliamente en latino américa y sobre lo cual hay amplia documentación que yo con mucho gusto te puedo proveer, sobre todo leer sobre Sones y Seises para educarse al respecto y, si quieres ahondar muchísimo más y abrir los ojos bien abiertos, pero sentado porque te puedes caer al piso, leer Cuerpo y Cultura: Las Música Mulatas del Caribe, en el que se hace un análisis exhaustivo de al menos 21 ritmos de la Bomba Puertorriqueña. Dentro de esos 21 de la Bomba Puertorriqueña, que dicho sea de paso tiene raíces diversas que son ajenas al territorio de Puerto Rico, del mismo modo que el Son cubano tiene raíces en la tumba francesa haitiana, por más que los cubanos muy convenientemente lo olviden. Pues, dentro de esos 21 ritmos que tiene la Bomba, algunos de los cuales vienen de Haití, otros que vienen de las antillas menores y hasta Curacao, hay una clave 2:3 en el ritmo Holandé. Lo que sucede es que estas personas lo que están tocando es un ritmo Sicá, que es del norte de la Isla y es el más popular porque es el que los puertorriqueños consideran el más sabroso. Con respecto a la salsa, ya César Rondón y Ángel Quintero y hasta el propio cubano Leonardo Acosta han diferenciado y distinguido, al igual que señalado los aportes particulares de los puertorriqueños en la innovación musical que resultaría en lo que se llama Salsa, que no es un ritmo, no es un género, sino más bien una manera de hacer y expresar la música de manera abierta, indeterminada, en la que en un solo número se mezclan diferentes tipos de ritmos puertorriqueños como puentes al ritmo principal del Son Montuno según lo hemos adoptado y ADAPTADO en Puerto Rico desde principios del siglo pasado, en un formato orquestal que es basicamente un grupo de Jazz. Carlos Eduardo Cataño describe esto en Genealogías Salseras ejemplificando esa manera de hacer música utilizando ejemplos tan diversos como la obra de Willie Colón, Willie Rosario, Raphy Leaviit y La Selecta (véase canciones como Panameña (Aguinaldo y Son Montuno), las Guarachas de El Gran Combo que mezcla melodías guaracheras puertorriqueñas con nuestra manera de hacer ritmo de son montuno (más rápido), Somos el Son de Leavitt, que incluye puentes enteros de Seis Jíbaro y recombina e intercala en un solo número rumba, bomba y tumbao, al igual que la canción Siembra de Rubén Blades. Y te puedo ejemplificar con cientos de ejemplos como estos si nos metemos en TODA la música de Tite Curet Alonso y Roberto Roena. Otro asunto que se tiene que reconocer es que, nos guste o no, ambas islas SIEMPRE han fornicado musicalmente, al punto que 3 de los mejores compositores de la ´´supuesta música cubana¨, que yo llamaría antillana, del mismo modo que hablamos español pero cuando escribimos le llamamos literatura cubana o puertorriqueña y no española, son Rafael Hernández, Pedro Flores y Bobby Capó. Por otro lado, y contrario a lo que se dice en Cuba, que ha tenido hegemonía en los círculos académicos hasta muy recientemente (que han tenido que admitir los aportes de etno musicólogos latino americanos), el bolero y la guaracha nos llegaron de España al mismo momento y tuvieron un desarrollo paralelo en ambos países, tomando estilos muy particulares en ambas islas. De hecho, muchos cubanos, en su nacionalismo irredento y etnocéntrico (asunto que como sociólogo algún día abordaré en una tésis doctoral), no solamente ignoran el origen haitiano del son cubano, sino que ignoran que en Cuba también han habido influencias puertorriqueñas en su música, sobre todo la huella inmensa que dejó allí Rafael Hernández, quien sentó las bases para lo que sería la orquestación de las agrupaciones cubanas que servirían para la base de La Salsa. Es notorio que Benny Moré y Arsenio Rodríguez recurrían a él para consejos sobre cómo arreglas ciertas composiciones. También ese nacionalismo irredento (véase Michael Hechter) etnocéntrico, cuyo propósito principal es engrandecer la identidad nacional y que desemboca en imperialismos culturales, produce disloques cognitivos de tales niveles que composiciones de Rafael Hernández como EL Cumbanchero, que es mayormente una composición clásica con elementos de Jazz, es atribuida por cubanos como música cubana, pese a que los propios musicologos cubanos no lo han considerado así historicamente (otro caso sería el de Cachita). En fin, cuidado con abrir la cajita de pandora hablando de estos temas, que somos muchos los boricuas que SIN DESRECONOCER el gran aporte cubano en la SALSA, sabemos muy bien el GRAN APORTE boricua en el desarrollo de la música cubana, puertorriqueña, antillana y hasta afro americana (nadie en Cuba lo quiere admitir, pero Juan Tizol fue el primer antillano y boricua en tener contactos y aportes significativos en el mundo del Jazz, influyendo en cómo ciertas corrientes musicales luego se convertirían en Latin Jazz). Aquí a sus órdenes.
Many of these Africans were brought to the coastal areas of PR. Initially they were sought after as cheap labor to replace the Tainos at the gold mines. After the gold was exhausted the industry switched to sugar and later on coffee. The sugar cane industry didnt pop off liked the Spaniards expected so slavery wasnt needed as much as Cuba. Slaves were able to buy their freedom cheeply hence a big free black population.

Aight lets break it down European: The majority of our European ancestry come from Southern Spain, Majorca, Canary Islands and Corsica. To a lesser degree French, German and Dutch. From the Middle East we have some Lebanese people that migrated to the island.
You definately right but Bomba specifically from Mayaguez is more influenced by Haiti than any other region where Bomba was and is played frequently on the island. Mayaguez has a great deal of French and Dominican influence in its history. Perfect example Ramon Bentances' father was Dominican and he was educated in France and was mixed with African heritage.

Taina, European and African, (the mother of them all), among others, are the 3 most prevalent ones. Each has its own characteristics and must be highlighted individually as well as together.
The word Guajiro is not Amerindian. It is a remnant of the Spanish-American War in which US soldiers called their Cuban counterparts, "War Heroes." Over time, this became known as Guajiro, what we called our campesinos...

Dicho eso, la clave 2-3 no es una invención cubana, pues está presente en otras tradiciones musicales, tanto europeas como africanas. Lo que sucede es que en el caso primero esa clave está presente en otros patrones rítmicos, a veces melodicos o de cuerdas, mientras que en el segundo caso la clave ya estaba presente en los ritmos africanos y eran claves con una pulsacion ritmica ternaria y pasa a ser binaria al pasar a la musica popular cubana. Otra cosa que se debe decir, y es que en el Seis Moruno jíbaro está presente el ´tumbao´ en clave 2:3, asunto que etno musicólogos han estudiado ampliamente en latino américa y sobre lo cual hay amplia documentación que yo con mucho gusto te puedo proveer, sobre todo leer sobre Sones y Seises para educarse al respecto y, si quieres ahondar muchísimo más y abrir los ojos bien abiertos, pero sentado porque te puedes caer al piso, leer Cuerpo y Cultura: Las Música Mulatas del Caribe, en el que se hace un análisis exhaustivo de al menos 21 ritmos de la Bomba Puertorriqueña. Dentro de esos 21 de la Bomba Puertorriqueña, que dicho sea de paso tiene raíces diversas que son ajenas al territorio de Puerto Rico, del mismo modo que el Son cubano tiene raíces en la tumba francesa haitiana, por más que los cubanos muy convenientemente lo olviden. Pues, dentro de esos 21 ritmos que tiene la Bomba, algunos de los cuales vienen de Haití, otros que vienen de las antillas menores y hasta Curacao, hay una clave 2:3 en el ritmo Holandé. Lo que sucede es que estas personas lo que están tocando es un ritmo Sicá, que es del norte de la Isla y es el más popular porque es el que los puertorriqueños consideran el más sabroso.
Con respecto a la salsa, ya César Rondón y Ángel Quintero y hasta el propio cubano Leonardo Acosta han diferenciado y distinguido, al igual que señalado los aportes particulares de los puertorriqueños en la innovación musical que resultaría en lo que se llama Salsa, que no es un ritmo, no es un género, sino más bien una manera de hacer y expresar la música de manera abierta, indeterminada, en la que en un solo número se mezclan diferentes tipos de ritmos puertorriqueños como puentes al ritmo principal del Son Montuno según lo hemos adoptado y ADAPTADO en Puerto Rico desde principios del siglo pasado, en un formato orquestal que es basicamente un grupo de Jazz. Carlos Eduardo Cataño describe esto en Genealogías Salseras ejemplificando esa manera de hacer música utilizando ejemplos tan diversos como la obra de Willie Colón, Willie Rosario, Raphy Leaviit y La Selecta (véase canciones como Panameña (Aguinaldo y Son Montuno), las Guarachas de El Gran Combo que mezcla melodías guaracheras puertorriqueñas con nuestra manera de hacer ritmo de son montuno (más rápido), Somos el Son de Leavitt, que incluye puentes enteros de Seis Jíbaro y recombina e intercala en un solo número rumba, bomba y tumbao, al igual que la canción Siembra de Rubén Blades. Y te puedo ejemplificar con cientos de ejemplos como estos si nos metemos en TODA la música de Tite Curet Alonso y Roberto Roena.
Otro asunto que se tiene que reconocer es que, nos guste o no, ambas islas SIEMPRE han fornicado musicalmente, al punto que 3 de los mejores compositores de la ´´supuesta música cubana¨, que yo llamaría antillana, del mismo modo que hablamos español pero cuando escribimos le llamamos literatura cubana o puertorriqueña y no española, son Rafael Hernández, Pedro Flores y Bobby Capó. Por otro lado, y contrario a lo que se dice en Cuba, que ha tenido hegemonía en los círculos académicos hasta muy recientemente (que han tenido que admitir los aportes de etno musicólogos latino americanos), el bolero y la guaracha nos llegaron de España al mismo momento y tuvieron un desarrollo paralelo en ambos países, tomando estilos muy particulares en ambas islas.
De hecho, muchos cubanos, en su nacionalismo irredento y etnocéntrico (asunto que como sociólogo algún día abordaré en una tésis doctoral), no solamente ignoran el origen haitiano del son cubano, sino que ignoran que en Cuba también han habido influencias puertorriqueñas en su música, sobre todo la huella inmensa que dejó allí Rafael Hernández, quien sentó las bases para lo que sería la orquestación de las agrupaciones cubanas que servirían para la base de La Salsa. Es notorio que Benny Moré y Arsenio Rodríguez recurrían a él para consejos sobre cómo arreglas ciertas composiciones. También ese nacionalismo irredento (véase Michael Hechter) etnocéntrico, cuyo propósito principal es engrandecer la identidad nacional y que desemboca en imperialismos culturales, produce disloques cognitivos de tales niveles que composiciones de Rafael Hernández como EL Cumbanchero, que es mayormente una composición clásica con elementos de Jazz, es atribuida por cubanos como música cubana, pese a que los propios musicologos cubanos no lo han considerado así historicamente (otro caso sería el de Cachita).
En fin, cuidado con abrir la cajita de pandora hablando de estos temas, que somos muchos los boricuas que SIN DESRECONOCER el gran aporte cubano en la SALSA, sabemos muy bien el GRAN APORTE boricua en el desarrollo de la música cubana, puertorriqueña, antillana y hasta afro americana (nadie en Cuba lo quiere admitir, pero Juan Tizol fue el primer antillano y boricua en tener contactos y aportes significativos en el mundo del Jazz, influyendo en cómo ciertas corrientes musicales luego se convertirían en Latin Jazz). Aquí a sus órdenes.

After the gold was exhausted the industry switched to sugar and later on coffee. The sugar cane industry didnt pop off liked the Spaniards expected so slavery wasnt needed as much as Cuba. Slaves were able to buy their freedom cheeply hence a big free black population.

Aight lets break it down European: The majority of our European ancestry come from Southern Spain, Majorca, Canary Islands and Corsica. To a lesser degree French, German and Dutch. From the Middle East we have some Lebanese people that migrated to the island.
You definately right but Bomba specifically from Mayaguez is more influenced by Haiti than any other region where Bomba was and is played frequently on the island. Mayaguez has a great deal of French and Dominican influence in its history. Perfect example Ramon Bentances' father was Dominican and he was educated in France and was mixed with African heritage.

Oscar. Our heritage is made up of a whole spectrum of ethnic ingredients and backgrounds from different parts of the world. Taina, European and African, (the mother of them all), among others, are the 3 most prevalent ones. Each has its own characteristics and must be highlighted individually as well as together.
