For me, my favorite version of ratchet is Animated, he’s such a grouch, but blatantly loves everyone on the team. His background makes him empathetic and tragic in a way. And all around helped make ratchet in general a definitive beloved character
i wish if we can get more solid transformers battlestation like this, this is probably one of my favourite battlestation transformers after energon tow-line(yes there's an actual character named tow line in the energon toyline)
I had to look up Energon Tow-Line to make sure he was the same toy I was thinking of and yeah, what a great toy! Odd that they used the name “tow-line” for a van transformer and not… a tow truck… but a great toy!
I remember seeing this toy at a thrift store when I was a kid. My parents were 100% convinced it was a bootleg it was so unlike other Transformers, so they had me put it back (thanks to the lead paint on kids toys scare going on.)
You can buy 3p heads for this, I think they work really well, they have a plastic piece underneath that fits perfectly and puts the head at the correct height above the glass
Great review of an underrated figure. I have the clip on heads for both Ratchet and Ironhide and they really do enhance the mold. With those heads, it's one of my favourite G1 molds.
I always loved the G1 artwork of Ironhide and Ratchet having a windshield for a face. I wish they tried to carry something of that into a toy today. Not every character needs to have a human face to be endearing in my book.
Have to agree on that. Brawn is my favorite minibot because of the No fave as well as looking drastically different compared to the rest of the minibots.
When Ratchet and Ironhide were reissued in the 00s, there was an add-on that could be purchased that was a head that clipped onto the windshields. It looked worlds better than the sticker on the seat. Also, Ratchet and Ironhide are a type of van called a "Cherry Vanette", much like Skids was a Honda City.
Despite the very obvious wheels on it, I never until this moment realized that the robot exosuit is made from the *bottom* of the vehicle mode, and the battle platform becomes the *top.* I guess I just always assumed G1 Ratchet and Ironhide worked like Energon Towline, where it's the other way around.
Favorite Ratchet... I think it might actually be the Cyberverse Spark Armor version. One of the few times Ratchet has been a dedicated design and not just a leftover Ironhide, and it's a really adorable figure with a quick, satisfying transformation. Chubby little hamster-shaped ambulance. Studio Series Ratchet is also very good, and the DOTM Legion figure.
Always thought the sled was the bottom of Ratchet & Ironhide...like some Transformer version of 'Davros' the creator of the Daleks....which weirdly made Ratchet & 'Hide a bit...creepy for me. Took me 30 years to realise it was just a sled/platform. Fun toys though. Sling an upgrade kit on these boys and you get a more standard toy. Nice to know these toys are so adaptable. Fun stuff!
I still don’t think Takara’s Diaclone / Microchange moulds get enough appreciation. ‘Good for their time’ even sounds too condescending. Many of them are excellent toys for today.
I like to think that this could be a cybertronian robot mode of ratchet. Like before they came to earth, he looked like this but when he was rebuilt he became more humanoid to appeal to humans.
G1 ratchet really had a rough time during G1, didn't he? He dies in the Movie, he get's "The Fly"-ed with megatron in the comics, his toy looked nothing like the one from either the cartoon, or the comic. Poor dude...
I really love my MP30 Rachet a lot. Reminds me of the cartoon version of Rachet. I also like my Bumblebee movie version. I never wanted the gen one version until I saw your video, now I have to agree, I need my own. Thanks for the great video.
It's so interesting to me that because of the original toys original intentions we have G1 characters who become guns and boomboxes somehow the same height as guys who become jets what a world
Some people will automatically decry anything that's even vaguely connected with Christianity, even when it's an organisation that actually helps others. And then you've got the actual Red Cross, who object to having their symbol used on toys and in video games, which is why toy ambulances and video game "medpacs" now have heart symbols or ECG graphics on them instead of internationally-recognised reddish cruciform symbols. I now await the shitstorm of Internet World Experts who will shortly weigh in on this debate . . . . 😉
My favourite is actually most likely Animated, so you're probably pleased to hear that. Like any old bastard still holding on to childhood memories I do love the G1 version though and I have a NewAge one which is simply Class.
Fun video! Thank you! On its own, this was indeed a cool and fun toy. But with the comic / animation model looking so wildly different, it's no wonder so many were disappointed by it. I can't think of an incarnation of Ratchet that I DON'T like, but if we're getting down to which toy version I like best, it's iGear's Medical Specialist. Oh, yes. I WENT there. And if you don't like it, tough noogies.
Friend of mine had an Ironhide from a car boot sale when we were lads and we were convinced it was broken or something and that's why it had no head. If only Chris McFeely had lived on my street we would have known the truth.
I look at this toy and think: "Man, I wonder why it didn't get a head." But when I think about it a little bit more, and seeing the "heads" some had tried to give it I think: "Why should it have a head?"
The figure itself is really cool and fun to mess with, you really just have to get past the fact that it’s suppose to be Ratchet😂 In all honesty I’d be fine if it was it’s own separate character, he could hang out with Whirl in the weird looking autobot club
If they made a modern toyline with a Ratchet that went from ambo to battle platform WITHOUT A ROBOT MODE but came with a little Diaclone guy, I'll be honest with you, I would absolutely buy it It's a very, very cool concept and it's due for a Renaissance
I bought the eHobby reissues back in the early 2000's. While I did it largely for being a completist for the first couple seasons worth of characters, I was already an adult then so it's really been about displaying them as opposed to playing with them. That said, I did get that third party upgrade that gave him more on character model head and arms. But no regrets on purchasing them. I did get the MP versions, but I doubt I'll ever transform those again. Mostly because I can't remember how. Now excuse me while I use some heat to temper some protein cylinders...
honestly I kind of like that robot design, would deserve an actual new figure and character name like other diaclone versions of existing characters. it's a robot with normal proportions if you think the seat is the head, though a weird head, and a windshield over it. gonna make an art of it be right back, can I mention you on twitter when posting it?
An interesting fact about Rachet that doesn't get talk about nearly enough, but "he" was actually suppose to be a "she". The Hasbro excs. at the time made the Transformers show runners change the character into a male.
My favorite ratchet will have to be Animated that version is a great new take for the character that will influence later incarnations most notably Prime version
Everyone saying Animated Ratchet is correct, but I gotta give a nod to Prime Ratchet, who really took that template and refined it. Jeffrey Combs’ line deliveries second to none.
never was a fan of the actual ratchet/ironhide figure itself but damn if Ive always loved the battle sled/repair bay/weird boat. always gonna be disappointed that the partsforming on the new van mold is just some shield instead of this. looking forward to the next newage ironhide/ratchet tho, with the sled teased in the single image.
Okay, here goes nothing! IDW MTMTE Ratchet is my favorite. Hard to beat a worn-down character who gets a new lease on life and even possibly finds love along the way. Okay, how'd I do?
My favorite is ratchet from Animated. It was the first transformers show I watched so I might be biased (imagine my surprise learning magnus wasn’t the original leader,etc,etc.). That being said I wonder if that’s where DJW got the inspiration for Animated’s version of Red Alert, considering g1 ratchet was also originally going to be female....
I love this mold conceptually. I've gotten into the Diaclone Reboot line and would love to see a reimagining of this and/or Ironhide in the same way they remade Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus' predecessors.
The only reason people dislike this one is cause he doesn't match people's image of ratchet, Anyway I would love a mech for ratchet that looks like this, also the best ratchet is energon towline
This is a brilliant toy really, I'd jump at a new Ratchet that felt more like this. Or at least gave him red hands and silver pants and some little hexagons on his thighs.
If this ratchet had a silly little cartoon sryles head instead of that seat id want this toy in a hearbeat. Still inset and everything just he had a ratchet head there instead would make me hapoy
Say have you ever reviewed Energon Tow-Line? He’s unique in a way you might enjoy, except for his weapon..........a sniper rifle is made of translucent red plastic
G1 was such a weird ride. Ratchet looking like this, Megatron being a lumpy mess, BumbleJumper, Enemy, etc. There's so much creativity, unlike now. Seriously, a GI Joe Megatron, Hasbro? That's what you're coming up with for the next crossover figure?
Never had Ratchet, but Ironhide was my first Transformer. I really liked him, but this was before I saw the Cartoon, Then I made him a head from polystyrene and painted it. While I liked G1 toon Ratchet, Animated is a better character. I thought G1 Ratchet was bit like Dr "Bones" McCoy.
Ratchet? More like... Rat Shit! Nah, but I love that toy, I almost wish they had gone more that direction with the earthrise ones, ya know? Like, upgrade them all the way to voyager and leader class, give them a big ol sled with little tank treads and everything, maybe then they would've had enough money to re-enigneer the feet. Heck, if they had just ditched the head at that point, just given us this guy with modern engineering, I mean, come on, I wouldn't have said no.
oh you KNOW it's tfa ratchet for me. how many times has tfa given us the best possible version of a character? more than any of us filthy fools can count and ratchet is yet another, YET ANOTHER, example of tfa being the best transformers series on this god forsaken planet
Fun fact : the original ratchet toy in diaclone was supposed to be a mecha, that's why it designed in this weird way,and hasbro tried to add a face to the u.s release of the toy by using a sticker
perpetually mixed on this figure, i want to appreciate what it is but with the battle platform and absence of a proper face it’s just really hard to read at a glance
For me, my favorite version of ratchet is Animated, he’s such a grouch, but blatantly loves everyone on the team. His background makes him empathetic and tragic in a way. And all around helped make ratchet in general a definitive beloved character
Agreed. The best
It's Prime Ratchet. He's voiced by Dr Herbert West and his deluxe toy is great fun.
I love his catchphrase, "Bulkhead, I needed that!"
I thought it was Jeffery Combs.
@@mechanwhal6590 Herbert West is the main character from the Reanimator movie, who Jeffery Combs played.

I bought those clip on heads years ago and they made this one of my favourite G1 molds.
Completely agree. Those head upgrades made for this mold and repaints really made it great.
Great review of an underrated figure. I have the clip on heads for both Ratchet and Ironhide and they really do enhance the mold. With those heads, it's one of my favourite G1 molds.

Favorite incarnation of Ratchet? Has to be animated.
Animated forever
I’ve only owned Animated Rescue Ratchet in my 26 years and he’s been a good little fella to me
Despite the very obvious wheels on it, I never until this moment realized that the robot exosuit is made from the *bottom* of the vehicle mode, and the battle platform becomes the *top.*
I guess I just always assumed G1 Ratchet and Ironhide worked like Energon Towline, where it's the other way around.
I was so disappointed when I got this as a child. I honestly though the head was missing.
Studio Series Ratchet is also very good, and the DOTM Legion figure.
this was the first time I actually watched a G1 Ratchet review 😀 And I must admit, it does look really fun
TRDQ is turning into Toby Reviews Done Quick and I'm here for it
Always thought the sled was the bottom of Ratchet & Ironhide...like some Transformer version of 'Davros' the creator of the Daleks....which weirdly made Ratchet & 'Hide a bit...creepy for me. Ditto
My favorite incarnations of both Ratchet and Ironhide…
…is Energon Towline
That igear rachet and ironhide always looked awesome and had a bucket of Accessories.
favourite ratchet is probably idw ratchet I love seeing him interact with the members of the lost light
I wish they’d revisit the sled concept to give a mobile repair bay vs a big fuck off shield like the ER version.
With Ratchet at least you could excuse the thing as a mobile medical bay or something.
I still don’t think Takara’s Diaclone / Microchange moulds get enough appreciation. ‘Good for their time’ even sounds too condescending. Many of them are excellent toys for today.

this is no animated ratchet i'll tell you what
great video as always
I saw the infamous PE Twitter post yesterday so it’s interesting to see an actual review of it while going into detail
Chris McFeely reference FTW!!
I really love my MP30 Rachet a lot. Reminds me of the cartoon version of Rachet. I also like my Bumblebee movie version. I never wanted the gen one version until I saw your video, now I have to agree, I need my own. Thanks for the great video.
It's so interesting to me that because of the original toys original intentions we have G1 characters who become guns and boomboxes somehow the same height as guys who become jets what a world
Why whould a red cross on an ambulance bother anybody? It's like hating pizza, because there is cheese on it.

Ugh. They were acceptable substitutes for their time, but in the age of WFC and Legacy, those spindly panels on antennae give me nightmares.
@@benvoliothefirst Nah, those WFC and Legacy figures have terrible vehicle modes.
I've been considering acquiring this figure (or G1 Ironhide) for awhile.
I think I'll press the Pay Now Button
Friend of mine had an Ironhide from a car boot sale when we were lads and we were convinced it was broken or something and that's why it had no head. If only Chris McFeely had lived on my street we would have known the truth.

I personally love the look of this figure. I'll pick him up one day! In terms of favourite Ratchets, I love the Prime iteration. Great review!
Even though I never grew up with G1 or Beast Wars, I enjoy the G1, Bayverse, and Aligned versions of Ratchet.
One of these days I'd like to get one of the animated Ratchet toys, though in the media, the Prime version is the one true Ratchet in my eyes.

What if, 80s kids enjoyed it as an ambulance van robot toy and didn't care if it was a Ratchet or Ironhide?
If I had to pick my favourite ratchet, it would probably be the STANLEY 3/8" 72 Tooth Ratchet (STMT82664-0).
An interesting fact about Rachet that doesn't get talk about nearly enough, but "he" was actually suppose to be a "she". The Hasbro excs. at the time made the Transformers show runners change the character into a male.
I wish we had more transformers like g1 rachet/ironhide and just duo cons in general even though they aren't they're close enough in my book lol
Watching this video makes me realize they should made a Commander Class Ratchet based on this toy lmao
My favorite ratchet will have to be Animated that version is a great new take for the character that will influence later incarnations most notably Prime version
Prime Ratchet will always be my favorite.
Everyone saying Animated Ratchet is correct, but I gotta give a nod to Prime Ratchet, who really took that template and refined it. Jeffrey Combs’ line deliveries second to none.

There's an upgrade kit for this, and Ironhide toy on BBTS.
Slap the head upgrade kit on and then this mold is perfect
What if I start, huh Gavin? :P
As for favourite, it's a toss up between Animated and Prime.
I hate that I didn't pick up one when it was rereleased several years ago.
I only have the animated ratchet figure and he's missing a leg
I love this mold conceptually. I've gotten into the Diaclone Reboot line and would love to see a reimagining of this and/or Ironhide in the same way they remade Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus' predecessors.
I've only owned and own the shattered glass ratchet
I wish Takara bring these idea to modern daiclone.
