  • I was sent this Bachmann WD Austerity by Stephen who told me it had suffered a drop and was now in a state of disrepair. I've decided to serialise this repair and edit it less so this will be Episode 1 of me trying to get it back together and running again.

What a great idea Bill. To actually see all of what you do in repairing a loco with all the waffle will be really interesting. Not only repairing but showing how to purchase parts, where to find them etc. Hope you keep all the bloopers and mistakes in as well to show we are all human. Looking forward to the next episode! 👍

I like this format Bill, not every time of course. But it explains your thinking and the best thing is how you go about getting spare parts. It’s like being sat on the other side of your work bench.

WDs have a reputation for being run down and clanky, mainly due to neglect. The KWVR one steams really well if fired correctly, it always liked a nice front to the fire, the key as a fireman being able to get the coal right to the front. It was always satisfying to hear the coal hitting the tubeplate. It would then need the injector on to prevent blowing off while climbing out of Keighley.

I think that this was of doing some of the videos is a good idea. You could always use the dramatic “Coming next time……” ending 😄😄

I have 2 of these…. Both failed miserably due to the Bachman grease turning to concrete on the final driver one suffered a burnt out motor and the other luckily because I came across the concrete grease managed to strip and clean it and save the motor

I have one of these that unexpectedly stopped and proved very reluctant to go. I could hear an occasional spark. What had actually happened was that the pick-up strip had lifted slightly and was shorting out on the metal chassis above it. One wonders why it does not have a separating strip.

Great video but Your Bachmann site and what we have in the States is entirely different. Very little parts are available here, so we need to rely on Ebay and other sources. It was a shock to see you navigate that, clearly well built, Bachmann site. I have repair envy, lol.

Given that this model represents one of the WDs used on the continent, I suspect that the damage on the right-hand side of the smokebox occurred when a Westinghouse air brake pump was knocked off. If it is not present in the kit of parts, you might want to see if a replacement is available from Bachmann. Very interested to see how the new format works out.

Bill found the part in the bag with the front bogie. It will be the Westinghouse pump, I agree.

Bill, the cab handrails should be attached to the cab doors first and then when the body is refitted the bottom re inserted into the chassis. Trying to fit them into the cab doors when refitting them attached to the chassis will be a nightmare. If you check the parts diagram you will notice the handrails are attached to the loco body not the chassis. Hope this helps on re-assembly

These type of repair are always a very slow start while examining and deciding what needs replacing. I find there is often a bit missing at the end and have to pay an extra £5 for a part that costs £0.50p !
