- Sejanus (played by Patrick Stewart), commander of the Praetorian Guard, is tricked and presented before the Roman Senate. This is a scene from the BBC legendary series, "I, Claudius."
I adore that wee smile Stewart gives about 4.20
Very much a “well played Macro”
And the man who plays Macro also played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings.
I like how Sejanus smiles in the end approving how good Macron got him
It reminds me of the type of smile that Macdowell would do in Clockwork Orange.
He is Picard
@@mkatakm they are The Borg ...
Which film is this ?
@@rustualtili it's a television series called "I Claudius" . It aired in the seventies ... It's not action packed, but as an adult you can understand the terror and violence of the era .
Wait until Bickus Dickus hears of this...
*/SNORT* 😂
That comment really DID have me laughing out loud.
I love how some of the senators begin leaving immediately once they realize what's the contents of the message
Supporters of Sejanus. :)
Notice Sejanus makes a rueful grin - an intriguer who has been outsmarted appreciates a clever move...
"well played.."
Stewart seems to make this his signature response. In the production of "Hamlet" with David Tennant as the Prince and Stewart as Claudius, in the final scene when Hamlet hands him the poisoned goblet, Stewart just looks at him, shrugs with that wee smile, and gulps it down.
He plays it so you can practically *hear* him think," Oh well, I tried. "
Sejanus still has the guy to the left of him at 4.21
Pontius Pilate had been appointed governor of Judea by Sejanus and the religious authorities in Jerusalem were aware of this and that Sejanus had fallen from Tiberius's favour as well. This is what they were referring to when they called Pontius out as being no friend of Ceasar, basically threatening him with being denounced in Rome as a Sejanus supporter who released a leader of a rebel movement in Judea.
Nobody knows what happened to Pilate Some say he was allowed to retire to his estates After all he was efficient
"Get me out of here Data! I'm in trouble!"
🤣
😁😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was my first exposure to Patrick Stewart. He knew how to play a bad guy.

Sejanus: I'll see that you take my command
Macron: Oh, don't worry about that
Stewart is bloody brilliant in this; as is all the other actors and actresses.
Good pair of legs as well
One of the greatest scenes in televised historical drama.
"I'll see that you get my position." Oh, he will, mate; you can bloody well bet your life on it! 😮
The Holodeck finally had enough of his shit and ended the "Ancient Roman Debauchery" program.
You can't get any more commanderly listening to both Patrick Stewart and JR Davies.
Macro got the same treatment for being just as corrupt as Sejanus.
He helped Caligula to power but Caligula became suspicious of him (probably one of his less deranged moments) and made him commit suicide.
After his Ascension, Caligula sent him to Egypt, which Macro believed as a reward and make him its governor. But actually, the moment he touched land he and his family were ordered to commit suicide.
@@nothisispatrick4644 wow, that's sick
I don't think I would have ever recognized John Rhys-Davies without the beard!
I didn't until he was without the helmet in another scene.

He's taller than I expected.
When Gimli meets Jean-Luc Picard in one Roman Empire scene.
When you have extraordinary actors and a rock solid script there is no need of special efects, CGI, not even brath taking stages.
@The0d0r1c Senators: "Sejanus is finished. Let's quietly leave so the emperor doesn't link us to him."
This was such a great series. Even more means and effects wouldn't have improved it much. It was all in the acting.
writing directing and camera work.
Agree. It helps that many of the actors came from a Shakespearian background. With a bare bone stage, acting was even more important. There is no distractions to disguise any shortfall in skill.

This is the best BBC.
the ruthless purges committed by Tiberius after this were worse than anything Sejanus ever did
Just an other day in Rome.
Akshually, Sejanus was still worse. When Tiberius went out for a purge on Rome hunting down Sejanus' allies, many were charged yes, but a significant lot of them got off free from the lack of evidence. Comparatively, Claudius had a higher execution count that Tiberius.
4:23. Kingpin: Farewell, Professor Xavier.
Prof. X: Well played, Mr. Fisk.
One big take away is that Sejanus changes to the structure of the praetorian guard set it on the course to become a corrupt emperor killing body later.
Sejanus didn't actually die, Data just turned off the holo-deck because Picard had been in there for far too long and the power had gotten to his head
Computer, save and end program!
Patrick Stewart in one of his first roles♥️🥰
Dear god the legend is true .... patrick stewart did have hair !
Professor Xavier before the X-Men (21st century).
Sorry that manuscript of this scene was lost forever. It is said that the impeachment address by Tiberius is masterpiece of Roman speech.
Nothin prooves it is true.
Computer Exit !! .. Computer execute complete shut down of the holodeck. It seems Moriarty is hacking the computer again.
Computer, end program.
Patrick Stewart is awesome
Not anymore.
I kept on waiting for the crew to arrive with phasers
Is this on the Holodeck?

Macro looks so happy :P
This was Pontius Pilate's backer which explains why Pilate is untouchable regarding his massacre of Jews until Sejanus was killed by Tiberius.
Wasnt the soldier in the Biggus Dickus sketch as well?
They're like:
"Senator senses tingling"
@The0d0r1c :) Yes, when I read this passage in the book, I had such a fit of hysterical laughter that my parents though I was quite mad.
I remember standing in the Senate House in Rome with my dad in 2009, telling him this story. (I also told him about Domitian being stabbed, which is the other famous story that I know about that place - Caesar was stabbed at Pompey's Theatre, not the current Senate House).
This is honestly kind of a tragedy. Sejanus would've been a better emperor than Caligula, no doubt.
I don't know. While Caligula was mad and cruel to the Senators, he was quite popular with the common people, and the empire was stable under his rule. Sejanus would have a tough time securing everyone's loyalty, being a usurper with no legitimate claim to the throne. His rule would most probably end up like Galba's and Otho's, unless he was a political genius, which he doesn't seem to have been.
But it was Tiberius, not Gaius (Caligula)
Well anyone was better than Caligula, but don't forget that Caligula only became Emperor because Sejanus had killed off all other remaining men in the Imperial family besides Caligula, Gemellus (who was too young to rule) and Claudius (who was perceived as a cripple and simpleton and ignored). Postumus Aprippa, Castor, Drusus or Nero (son of Germanicus) might have made decent Emperors and at least would have been better than Caligula. And these were just the deaths that Sejanus was responsible for. Sejanus got what he deserved.
@@MrAlexkyra even nero or elagabalus or commodus
Possibly. But then so would Incitatus, advisor to Caligula and senator.
He should have adjusted his Macro settings.
I had to watch this series 3 times before I realized the fat centurion is John Rhys-Davis, aka Salah, Prof. Arcturus, and Gimili
A HA HA HA HA HA................JUST LOOK AT THE POOR SOLDIER WHEN THE GUARD WAS CHANGED.............HA HA....THAT ONE AT THE LAST LINE ON THE RIGHT as we watch the video..............
I don't get it. Why didn't he just say "End program!" and leave the Holodeck?
6-foot Gimli backstabbed hairy Picard.
Does anybody know what eventually happens to Macro? He plays such a big role behind the scenes during that volatile period, and is instrumental in some key actions - then he suddenly just disappears from the film - is there a deleted scene somewhere w his fate?
All I remember from this when I was a little kid and my parents watched this is when the guy orders the kids head to be cut off cause he coughs too much.
Macro is such a badass!
one of the best tricks in history, but Pikard would spot it.
You can see the subtleties of his performance but the edition quite missed it.
Fantastic knees! ;)
If only all Rome had just one neck to chop!
That's what you get for starting your career as a walk on in Coronation Street.
I knew it Sejanus was so familiar!
But how often do you REALLY think of the Roman Empire 🤔
GIMLI!!! IS GIMLI!!!!
Jean-Luc: Computer, end program I Claudius.
Computer: Voice command is not in my store in my data bank. Program continues.
One, armed Legionaries weren’t allowed in the city. Two, Sejanus had a heavy beard
Praetorians were allowed
and the enforcement of the weapons crossing the pomerium became less common as the Empire grew.
He had hair!
As always the Legions loyalty is to Rome
Within a few years of this there was literally a war where the legions named 4 different emperors at the same time lol, the legions' loyalty were to their commanders because their commanders made sure they got paid and rewarded with land after their service. PS. these were Praetorian guard not legionaries in the clip, they were the Emperor's personal army and Sejanus was their commander
@@wolfganghendery8298 Wrong it was intimately to Rome even today their ultimate loyalty was to their country and ruling seat at the time was Rome
Don't tell an ex serving soldier any different
Just as in Australia our loyalty is to Canberra and our Govenor General we merely obey our commanders because they are the ones that give us our orders

Tiberius after 31 AD was a lot more ruthless than Caligula who was extremely depraved and insane but actually wanted to move to Egypt after a disastrous trip to Germania and rumors of multiple conspiracies on his life.
Tiberius' purge after 31 AD was an age of pure terror, with dozens being executed every week, guilty or not.
Yes indeed. At least Caligula could use insanity as an excuse. The ageing, jaded Tiberius became a total monster. Many of the treason trials were allegedly a complete sham, as wealthy senators were found guilty of ludicrous 'crimes', and they and their families were executed just so that Tiberius could lay claim to their estates. And then of course there were the supposed atrocities that he subjected young children to, during his last years on Capri.
Generally speaking, Tiberius was apparently reluctant toward confiscation - the proofs are not consistent. Only three cases are explicitly recorded: the fortunes of C. Silius, of Sejanus and the mines of Sex. Marius. Still, it does not seem, as per Cassius Dio, that the value of the properties themselves prompted legal actions under Tiberius. After all, he had always displayed a frugal lifestyle, and he was not in shortage of money.
Tiberius =Vozhd Stalin / Kim Il Sung !!!
Make it so.
Patrick Stewart in a toupee.
Nope, this was back when he had hair.
is this star wars?
A brutal barbaric empire
Brutal and barbaric is what all empires were (and are).
similar to the trial of Q in star trek
1:01 is that Spock? xD
So the rumors are true that Gimli and Professor X are actually acquainted.
Sejanus was a terrible traitor. His children were raped and killed.
Tiberius called him the partner of my labour's. The show trials and executions of the weak senators was a reign of terror. He ruled by a spies and terror while the big T was in capri for years.
We have a soccer day called the macron Cup.i laugh when I think of macro who strangled tiberias and let caligula rule until he was executed for treason 😊
The changing of the guard bit's awful. So hard to take it seriously, especially with the crab walk the other captain does at 2:08.
That 'crab walk' is actually part of modern military drill. Well, at least here in Australia.
ha ha............look at the last guard how he walks like he was shit in his pence
Damn that's an old comment. In the years since, the Tory-disfigured BBC has blocked this video in the UK, so i can't even see it. Noice!

Is this a comedy ? The soldiers seems to be wearing plastic armour and holding plastic shields... they tried to look serious. But actually they looked funny.... 😂
The American can't ignore the superficial insufficiency, he needs his CGI Hulk!
The series was made on a shoestring budget. Forget the cheap costumes and stage scenery, just look at the magnificent acting and direction.
