Wow I can’t thank you enough for this. Jacob’s guitar playing has always blown me away, and to see how accessible it can be is truly inspiring

You’re welcome! I’m glad it all made sense. I, too, was blown away at how accessible his playing really is. It says a lot about how his music can be so compelling and harmonically rich, without needing to be overly technical to play. That is the beauty of altered tunings - the repeatable shapes. Usually I’d have more chord diagrams on the video itself, but I wanted to get that one out as close to his release as possible. Grab the transcription for the full map. Stay tuned for more tutorials on his songs coming soon. 👍

@3:39 I mentioned that Jacob basically “grabs the strings“ which is a crude, over simplification of his fingerpicking. To clarify, I’m just trying to say that the pattern is not overly specific, so we don’t have to worry so much about the right hand at this point.

I think the G String could also just be tuned up to A, that way you don't have to worry so much about muting/not picking it

Thanks for the comment! Tuning the G up may result in breaking the G string, especially if you use medium gauge strings. Tuning the D up to E, it’s better if you have light gauge strings, which would be a .032” gauge. My Jacob Collier Chord Voicings Video explains that Jacob uses a custom .030” gauge for his raised string to allow for the added tension. I also demonstrate that if it’s too high for your vocal range, you could tune everything down a whole step to CGDGGD and then no longer have to worry about the third string, which would be just like you suggested with the doubled second and third string, just a whole step lower, and then you could adjust the capo wherever you need it. There are also chords in which the open G string works over them, but I’m just demonstrating the voicings to be as true to what Jacob actually plays. The transcription study notes explain which chords can use the open G string without changing the extensions that Jacob uses.
