If this is an "honest" review this has got to be the most ignorant and inaccurate person to review of the Tidradio TD-H8. Straight up Turd Merchantism. No idea what he's talking about.. other than if he gets in to politics then I get what he's doing.
Me and a friend have Baofeng Rados we were camping and I went to go home I left him at camp I drove out of camp down the mountain to the main road that's about a 7 Mile Stretch between the main road and where he was camped at we talked all the way down the mountain 7 MI heavy trees when I turned left to go home I talked to him about another mile before I lost him so that was a good test for those radios I was impressed
Totally terrain dependent; in my area, it’s about 2 miles max with standard antenna.
I recently got the same performace with Baofeng, I got about 7 miles, thick pine forest and rolling hills
I've been playing with my radio all weekend trying to work out the kinks
Appreciate your honest reviews. Keep it coming.
They sell batteries that can be charged with out the charging stand but you have to buy a different USB cord that plugs into those batteries for the beo funk
Bonus, those batteries are the extended capacity ones.
As a HAM I don’t like BaoFeng because of the spurious emissions. Of course in an emergency who cares but for regular use I don’t like the bleeding over into other frequencies as badly as BaoFeng does.
I’m also a ham operator, I agree. It works in an emergency, definitely not for everyday use. 73 Aloha 🤙🏽
I don't like all the rfi I get from the Baofeng chargers, horrible noise on my other radios when the Baofeng chargers are plugged in.
@zathrasnotzathras9435 is there a handheld that you DO like for regular use? (Newbie to HAM here) trying to figure out if there is an "everyday driver" to learn on that can function as my bug out / emergency radio...
@@hankmerkle5928 there are many hand held radios at various prices that are ok. Currently I’m using a Wouxun KG- UV9D plus. Think about what you want from a bug out radio. I’m not convinced an HT is the best. Even with a good roll up antenna or something you can get higher in the air, if repeaters go down you may only get a few miles. I recommend looking at videos discussing ham radio and emcomm. But if all you can afford right now is an HT I’d take a look at Wouxun, Yeasu, Kenwood, and put money into upgrading the antenna. Many good roll up J-poles are on the market for a reasonable cost. Just understand the limitations you’ll have but that’s true with any set up. Have fun learning and enjoy the hobby!
Can it be jailbroken like the Baofeng? Does it have a waterproof rating?- that seems to be the main complaint against the uv5r. I believe the baofeng battery upgrade can charge right off usb.
Yes it can be jail broke and no not waterproof .
Good video Bill
Question:
Do you have a setting that stops the video whenever a viewer clicks on a link, etc?
I clicked on the links, and video stopped, I also noticed that on an earlier video. Wanted it to play/listen in the background but couldn't.
Hmm. Probably a device or browser thing. I checked on my phone on this one and another channel both continued playing as I scrolled around a website.

Old School Is Sometimes The Best! I Like CB Radios For Close Range Comm's, Like Highway/Freeway Traveling, Hiking And Camping, Since Most Don't Have Such Older Style Radios! 😎
How did you sneak this past me, Top?! 😂 I have been checking out a Baofeng 8 watt hand-held that just might do the trick in my area. My GMRS license should cover me on the legal end. I want to learn how to setup the repeaters on my Midland 50 watt mobile unit to see just how far it can transmit & receive....
With a good antenna, I can hit 12 miles with my mobile through my vegetation and micro terrain back to the house.
Working on setting up repeaters for our use but they are too easy to set up in your radio.
www.radioreference.com/db/browse/coid/1
Search for repeaters and plug in the info. Is easy but also easy to miss plugging in a tone or offset.
@@STOKERMATICThank you, Bill. I'm going to see if I can do this without phoning a friend... 🤣 🥃 Cheers!
only thing i dont like about the uv5r is you cant make changes to memory channels on the fly. For instance if you wanna turn on ctcss on a saved channel you gotta remake the channel in the vfo then save it to another channel. Unless im missing something. TIdradio lets you change it. SO does the uv17r. Look at the bottom of the radio and your usb issue will be resolved
Please unlock the TidRadio and do another review.
I hear what you are saying about he DMR but there is a reason to have the others. Simply put, for OPSEC, you need those internal coms secured as is possible. But for enemy .onitiring or misinformation you need the other. I dont think its a one or the other situation. But rather both. Having that capacity to listen in on the GMRS and analog stuff gives you information about who is moving through your area if you are listening.
I think you might of got one of the first Gens of the Tidradio H8 the second Gen of the H8 the charging slot is on the bottom of the battery . I ended up getting a hold of Tidradio about the batteries for mine and they sent me two batteries for my radios do to the fact they both where not charing right.
Curious what frequencies it transmits on, is it UHF only?
Link goes to a "10 watt" radio. For $89.00
I have a couple of the Baofeng radios, guess they have a place, if you actually take the time to program them. Most of the preppers who have bought them, don't even take the time to learn how to program them, or learn what frequencies they can use. The two I have, one was given to me and the other I payed $5 for at a pawn shop.
The Tidradio is GMRS TRX only.
And too true about programming radios.
It ain’t hard, and better to do it now. Make some cheat sheets for family, etc

Bow(front of a boat)-fang is the Warlord special and you just can’t beat it for $30
“Bow Fang” is how we say it, but Top is correct, we *should* pronounce it “Bow Fung.”
And here I've been calling it a the Buff wang...@@jukesjointOG
@@bafumat I mean… if, if, uhhhh… you could, if that’s what’s on your mind.
@@jukesjointOG I was thinking buff as in muscular... But wax on wacks off works too.
Yeah they're controversial. XD! The Tid? Radio is more than likely just a BuFung hidden in the knock off body of a Anytone UV-878 HT. Talking about a blunder bust. I'm going to use a Baofeng in Airsoft if I break it? I'm out 20 bucks. When I need a robust reliable EDC HT. I well use a Yaesu FT-60, 70. I'm not interested in rodger beeps, verbal chatter while moving through menus or fancy colored screens that soak battery life. The point of the radio hobby in my opinion is to craft communications whilst making the smallest imprint on the airwaves with the least amount of power possible. Awesome Video!
I thought you could reset those to transmit
My thoughts are. If these don't reach farther than 2 miles why not just have a walkie-talkie other than it being GMRS?
Because a walkie talkie only puts out .5 watts and will go about a quarter of the distance as these radios, and they're limited to specific 'channels' which are widely known and pre-programmed into other walkie talkies so anyone in the area can easily listen.
@@vitogriffin8902 okay thanks. I didn't know the distance was that short.
Also we can use repeaters
Well I have a boefeng UV5r Ham and I have the Boefenf 9r GMRS that’s IP67 rated water proof. I do have my GMRS license looking to get my Ham license here soon, stoker they make a separate battery for boefeng that take a usb cable. Thought of FCC MM said it best F the three letter agencies
Uv9r/uv9g are 8w/splashproof and are usb rechargeable
And the uv9r can be unlocked to work on frs/gmrs murs and vhf/uhf
Baofeng uv
Baofeng 17 Pro is USB rechargeable plus does other things you would like just saying
Check out $22.00 signal stick antenna to help the Baofeng get out.
I got one and I love and I jailbroke it
I like tidradio for the build Quality..... built way better than baofeng.
All the cool kids know it's pronounced, "Boof-Wang".
Good review!! I'm "allergic" to white lights. The white flashlight would be a deal breaker. If I had no choice red nail polish takes care of things like that. Red lens tape takes care of displays. Do try the tape at home. You're putting a red filter on the display. That could filter out some of the data.
White light, when you're trying not to be found, is a big Bozo No No. (Don't get me started on things people carry for light.)
White light has a place. You can't see red and green always.
@@landrecce For signalling, sure!!!! Make sure it's hooded so it can't be seen from the side. No sense advertising.
But not being seen is my point.
Taking this a little further than saying, "I'm Here" Do you know Morse code? Is your white light set up to send? (more so than an on / off switch). Can you send / receive a SITREP? lol I'd better quit. (Daytime use your t shirt and a stick. Morse, not semaphore. Wigwag is a good search term.)
@@mervmartin2112 um. Have you ever been in the bush? You use white light whenever you're non tactical.
@@landrecce Certainly. When I'm thinking of getting away, hiding, escaping, etc. It's tactical. No white.
Why the hate for Baofeng? They work great and are cheap.
There are 2 main problems with the UV5r, other baofeng models, and similar cheap radios. 1) they transmit on the harmonic frequencies, so when you're transmitting on a given frequency you're also transmitting on multiple others. 2) they're prone to easily breaking and/or failing completely for no reason whatsoever. They're decent toys and training aids, but they're not tools for serious comms in an actual emergency situation. It's not a matter of if the radio will let you down, it's a matter of when.
@@vitogriffin8902 you sound like a guy that would say Tiger Stripe will get you killed and only Gen 3 PMAGs save lives.
@@landrecce I don't know what you're talking about. I haven't said either of those things, but what I said about the radio is verifiably true. Feel free to play with whatever radios, mags, camo or whatever toys you like. It doesn't matter to me.
@@vitogriffin8902 Here is my point. I'll use Bart Simpson walkie talkies if they get the job done. Most of what I do is overkill and I'm not afraid to spend but the average cat just can't keep up and I'd rather run with 12x comms than none at all. You always take a risk when you transmit. That is the game. Movement is a risk. Involvement is a risk. Existence is a risk. There are pros and cons to all things. I'm not sure who you are, but Bill is qualified to make absolutes. He's also qualified to hear another man talk. I am disappointed with the UV5R radios being turned into a joke, but that's just my personal opinion. I run a team that employs them in a limited capacity and they've served us well thus far. Have a good day Sir.
👍
Okay, so all these posts and nothingness... whats the best radio then?
