Thank you for another fantastic video! I wanted to mention a super easy gadget for vacuum sealing jars which is made by Food Saver: It is a "cordless handheld food vacuum sealer" (V1100 Cordless Handheld Food Vacuum Sealer, Black). I bought one for my 100 year old mother who still does a lot in the kitchen and one for myself. We both love it! Mom says this is the best gadget she has seen in years! I use mine to vacuum seal freeze dried food in to jars, vacuum seal any extra oxygen absorbers, and to vacuum seal food in to the special zip lock food saver bags for freezing food. It is much less expensive than a full -sized vacuum sealer! This works with the lid sealers you show in this video.
I always keep @ least three 64oz Ball jars full of hash brown potatoes. I've used both the shredding & julienne discs for my food processor. Since there isn't much size difference, I'll be using the julienne disc from now on. STARCH TIP: after the potatoes are processed, I put them in a bowl with salted water, which removed a lot of the starch. I then put them in a fine mesh strainer & rinse them off right before blanching. The blanching water is still extremely cloudy, but rehydration produces very little cloudiness. I also keep diced potatoes on hand.

I have a new dehydrator and wanted to try this. My husband is a big fan of these type of potatoes. So I got online and checked out pricing in our area for several stores. Kroger had 5 pound bags of shredded hash browns for $2.99 on sale. Walmart had 4 pound bags for $3.99. Since we needed to go to Kroger to pick up a prescription we picked up 10 pounds. by evening I had one bag all finished! Thanks for all the knowledge you give us Pam. We are 70 and 74 and trying to make meal prep easier any way we can. I do all the cooking around here.
Well, between this video of dehydrated potatoes & an your earlier one on dehydrating hamburger....I feel totally prepared for any event that would require me to live off my canned food. Thank you for your clear & concise instructions! Thank you for your "taste-test" runs too! lol
I've been dehydrating shredded potatoes for years, I use them in cream of potato soups, we especially love them in zuppa toscana soup. no more peeling potatoes just to make soup.
When rehydrating potatoes, or anything for that matter, you can have some additional fun with flavor depending on what you decide to rehydrate with! Do you have some potato powder that you want to turn into luscious mashed potatoes? Why not rehydrate them with chicken broth? You want to season your hashed browns as evenly as possible? Why not rehydrate with salty water? I'd like to explore the results of rehydrating different foods with different liquids more but these few examples are delicious!
I have dehydrated many foods but have never thought of hash browns. Thank you for not only dehydrating them but reconstituting them to see that it's worth it. Thank you again.🤗

Great idea to save time! I am all for saving my time and energy these days! Nice to see the dehyrating won out over freeze drying this time. I hear so much that freeze drying is the best for everything. Not getting one any time soon here. Thank you for this wonderful video.
I heard crunching and honestly that's all we need for hash browns :) ! Glad to know that the dehydrated ones came out with a bit of a better mouth feel.
Oh Thank you Pam and Jim. Love how you compared the two styles dried. Surprised and glad you liked the dehydrated ones texture better. I better get started on some. We love hash browns. I could never afford a freeze dryer but do love to dehydrate so am happy with what I am trying to do.

I was anxious to see your result of the dehydrated hash browns. I tried some a few months ago, and real upside the potatoes has an oil coating, and my efforts failed miserably. Maybe I should look for frozen hashbrowns that aren’t coated with oil.

Thank you for sharing this! (For making and sharing so many videos, really. We recently lost my MIL, whom I was going to ask for instruction in canning. [I don't know if her slapdash canning was safe. She would use old, rusty lids and rings and so on. {My mom didn't do food preservation so I wouldn't have known otherwise.} Not knowing better, I would've done it her way.] Thank you from the heart, you have one viewer that soaks up every drop of info like a sponge. Even down to parenthesis, brackets, and braces.)
mayhem: (We are sorry for the loss of your MIL. [From your description of her canning practices, it sounds like you are correct, she was not safe. {We are happy you have watched our channel.} And learned a safer, science based approach to canning.] The safety for your family and the others you present your canned foods to is our primary focus.) Jim
Very nice comparative experiment, demonstration and explanation of each process, finish product comparison, etc. The finish products being pretty equal, I prefer the dehydrator for these reasons: less processing time, I assume less energy too, and a denser storage foot print ... for these kind of potatoes anyway. I look forward to your future postings. Cheers, Thx!
I really appreciate your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all. I am planning on dehydrating some of the potatoes I'm growing this year and haven't thought about doing them from frozen. Good tip when you are low on freezer space!

Costco sells dehydrated hashbrowns in little milk cartons that are excellent. May be an option for folks who can't afford a freeze dryer ($$$!) or even a good dehydrator. Also, look for added ingredients in frozen hashbrowns. Oils and spices may be added. Thanks for all you folks do!
I found some Simply Potatoes on sale recently. I grabbed 6 packages and dehydrated them. I then vacuum sealed them. I would have loved to get more but there are other people who might want to get some too. I watch the store sale ads to see what they have cheap that I can dehydrate...frozen vegetables or fruits, herbs, fresh vegetables. etc.
Excellent idea! I was thinking about how I could get lots of potatoes and keep them long term. I am only able to dehydrate currently, but this is yet another option. This channel makes me happy. Thank you 😊
Hello 👋 I hope you’re safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness prosperity and love all over the world 🌎 I’m Doctor Christopher Johnson from New York and you where are you from if I may ask?
Confession: I cheat one more step. I buy the large boxes of dehydrated hash browns at sams which are what many restaurants use, then divide up into smaller mylar bags with oxygen absorbers for my prepper pantry. I also prepare a few small packs vacuum sealed for camping. Sam's brand is Idaho Spuds but Ore-Ida and other companies sell a similar product. They are 100% non-GMO potatoes and actually quite inexpensive, especially considering they are already dehydrated for storage, they rehydrate very well, and are quite tasty. I use them not only for hash browns but also casseroles or anything else I want shredded potatoes for.
@Sandra W., I was thinking about preparing for camping, did you include an oxygen absorber in your bag? And did you ever use the vacuum bags that come with the sealer or just Mylar bags? Thanks for your comment!
@@jenpetunia for camping or shorter term storage (< 6 mo) I just vacuum seal in a regular food saver bag with no extra O2 absorber or anything. I've kept them at least a year that way in my little RV with no problems.

A 2 pound bag of frozen hashbrowns fits on one dehydrator or freeze dryer tray. Freeze dried they weigh almost nothing and rehydrate quickly. The dehydrated ones shrink and get very hard they take a little longer to rehydrate. Doing the cubed southern style hasbrowns gives you more options.

I got some frozen hash browns for a good price and dehydrated them. I decided to powder them along with other veggies after watching another one of your videos. I hope they work for instant potatoes but if not maybe they will make good potato soup.
Thank you, Pam. In 2020,I dehydrated blanched potatoes, sliced and shredded. I added some frozen shreds as I found them. Potatoes are huge staple in my house. I truly appreciate you do both dehydrated and freeze dried. I'd love a freeze dryer, but cost is too much for me to justify, but also I have an old house that it would probably blow fuses like air fryer does. I also do can potatoes as well.
KY: It sounds like you and your husband are doing a great job putting all of the information from Pam's videos to great use. Jim
Well, between this video of dehydrated potatoes & an your earlier one on dehydrating hamburger....I feel totally prepared for any event that would require me to live off my canned food. Thank you for your clear & concise instructions! Thank you for your "taste-test" runs too! lol
shibui99: Thank you! Jim
I've been dehydrating shredded potatoes for years, I use them in cream of potato soups, we especially love them in zuppa toscana soup. no more peeling potatoes just to make soup.
Hello Patricia, how are you hope you’re staying safe

Great. Thank you. Love hash browns!!! With limited freezer space I’ll dehydrate the frozen ones. Yay.
Dehydrated 8 pounds of hash browns and 6 pounds of diced potatoes last week. Feels great to have them put away.
Since I don't have a freeze-dryer, it's nice to know there's at least one food item that tastes better dehydrated, lol ;-)
I will be dehydrating some hash browns. They take up less room in the jars. Thank you so much for the info.
I heard crunching and honestly that's all we need for hash browns :) ! Glad to know that the dehydrated ones came out with a bit of a better mouth feel.
Fabulous, I can save so much space in the freezer in the motorhome for more meat. thanks for sharing!!👩🏽🌾👍🏽🙏🏽🧡💖
Oh Thank you Pam and Jim. Love how you compared the two styles dried. Surprised and glad you liked the dehydrated ones texture better. I better get started on some. We love hash browns. I could never afford a freeze dryer but do love to dehydrate so am happy with what I am trying to do.
Patricia: Let us know how your dehydrated hash browns taste. Jim

Do not reply to Christopher J, he is a troll trying to scam someone. I noticed he sent 3 of us the same thing.
Thank you 🥔
I'm going to purchase the frozen potatoes and dehydrate them. Thank you Pam another successful experiment.
I appreciated the side by side comparison!!
I was anxious to see your result of the dehydrated hash browns. I tried some a few months ago, and real upside the potatoes has an oil coating, and my efforts failed miserably. Maybe I should look for frozen hashbrowns that aren’t coated with oil.
Ooo, that’s a good tip! Thanks.

@@sheila656 shame on you! Why would you make such an unkind remark!
✋🏻. Low on freezer space…adore dehydrating. I now have two, lol.

For the first time I understand the concept of dehydrating vs freeze drying from a scientific basis. Thank you Pam!

I watch the store sale ads to see what they have cheap that I can dehydrate...frozen vegetables or fruits, herbs, fresh vegetables. etc.
Thanks very much!
Excellent idea! I was thinking about how I could get lots of potatoes and keep them long term. I am only able to dehydrate currently, but this is yet another option. This channel makes me happy. Thank you 😊
I placed hash browns on my fridge list. It's my "watch for bargains" list. Two good videos this week!
TY Pam…this looks sooooo easy. I am going to try this for sure (dehydrating). 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Ditto - so much easier- Agreed, some things if the cost is right is less work & expensive to just buy it.
Thanks! @Sandra W!
Pam I would really love to have me a freeze dryer me and my husband has been talking about one but they cost so much Lord that would be a blessing to get one I love watching these video of yours I have learned so much from you and Jim you too are the sweetest and most loving person I've ever seen I love your videos I truly do God bless you both see you in your next video
Harvest Right has a Layaway program.
You 2 are the best. Thankyou so much.
I went to my local Food Lion yesterday. Whole frozen potatoes section empty. I love hash browns, looking forward to trying this.

Thank you- you are teaching me so much!
Hello Miss Rose I love your videos I'm learning a lot keep up the good work and God bless you and your husband
That was so easy. I need to make room in my freezer so I pulled out 3 2-lb. bags of shredded hash browns and dehydrated them. They all fit into 1 half gallon Ball canning jar. Now I want to make some more.
Geni: That is fantastic!! Jim
Thank you so much I have learn so much from you and i am just learning you have helped me so much and i think you are a beautiful lady God bless you

I really am glad you did the dehydrated potatoes I have been doing alot to stock up. Having potatoes in storage is great.

I have used dehydrated hash browns for years ore ida makes one they are sold by the flaked potatoes and come in what looks like a milk carton they are delicious and wonderful for camping i thank you for this information so I can now compare prices and make my own without all the work
Brenda: Thanks for the information. Jim
I'm trying to keep as much produce as I can. Keep these types videos coming. Nobody else, I've seen, rehydrated items afterwards. You're worth your weight in gold!
LjT: One of the reasons we show both is that a lot of people cannot afford a freeze dryer and a dehydrator gives an alternative method for storing food for a long period of time. Thank you for watching our videos. Jim
Great idea with hash browns! Easy peasy!
Another win! Will be heading out to pick up some hash browns!!
Thank you for all the videos that you do I'm learning a lot
I will try this in my dehydrator. 😁👌
Thank you and God bless. Can't wait to try. I just got my dehydrated this year and I'm really enjoying it.
Randi: That sounds wonderful. Jim
Thanks for the video! We have been dehydrating and using frozen hash browns for several years. They store well and taste great, and the process is, as you said, very simple and quick. One of the easiest things to prep and dehydrate.

Great Experiment, I can almost smell them. 😋👍
I've never seen Hash Potatoes like that in the UK. Ours come Frozen in little Triangle shapes, that you Bake.
I may have to make some from scratch, & then dehydrate them.
TFS RRH, & take care everyone. ❤🙂🐶
I really appreciate your demonstrations.
Thanks, that was a very interesting controlled comparison.
I have done both. I prefer dehydrated on these as well. That's good, because dehydrating is much faster. 😁👍🏻
Now I want more gadgets!!! :) Thanks for sharing this information!
Thank you very much. I know I'll get lots of recipes for these.
This is exciting! I don't have a freeze dryer but I do have a dehydrator. I'm happy to see the end result and they tasted great! I'll be doing this one this weekend. I need to go watch the whole dehydrator playlist now. Thanks as always!
Great class!! Thank you!!
Another winner Pam! I hadn't thought about dehydrating hash browns. In fact I have some already dehydrated hash browns in my on-line grocery cart to buy....$1.42 for 4.2 ounces!

Interesting? I like that you don't have any patience either. That was funny Pam.
Potatoes would be easy to add a handful to eggs while you scramble or a frittata. Another good job.
Hello Donna
Very easy and pretty quick too. I'm going to dehydrate hash browns also since we won't be able to preserve them as plain ol' potatoes in the Texas summer heat. Unless you have any ideas? Tysvmfs, and yep, I'm still learning. Stay safe 😊 👋

Hey Jo
Great video Pam 👍 I know I could never afford a freeze dryer but I know I can get a dehydrator soon and the fact that there's lots of talk about a potato shortage coming soon 😳 it's great to know how well the dehydrator worked. I plan on canning next week for the very first time and potatoes and chicken soup will be the first few things I will canin my new Nestco canner and it's all because of your videos. I trust you and I am so excited 😊.
Great comparison!! I'm loading my dehydrators tomorrow with shredded potatoes. I'll be using fresh potatoes, so shredding and blanching for a while.
YES!!! Thanks so much!
