@xkc740 an average drummer wouldn't be able to play this, Dyers Eve, Damage Inc, Battery and Trapped Under Ice, amongst many other 80s era Metallica songs.
I think he was one of the best drummers in his earlier years for sure. Especially innovator and thrash music. I'm not sure what happened maybe he doesn't have the flexibility to do the things that he used to do. But I've watched other drummers famous guys that are fucking phenomenal. No matter what they say about Larsa, he has interesting parts and arrangements, everything is in its place and it’s perfect for metallica, he’s great!!! I agree that now it’s not so impressive at concerts and the sound is not the same, but before 1993 it was what was needed!
Sadly, I assumed this was gonna be a joke when I read the title. It's a pleasant surprise to see a positive review of his drumming because there's no shortage of performances from him that deserve credit.
Could you please break down what happens at 5:30 and beyond when he goes into the main riff a 16th note after James, and the whole interpretation of the riff shifts? Playing that syncopated mid tempo is one thing, but then the snare fills in the middle of it happen a 16th note sooner! That's the part I'd really like to see played. That is one of Lars’ finest fills, thanks for breaking that up for us!
This and the snare fills on One are probably his best.

AJFA was one of Lars greatest albums by far if you set aside the black albums popularity
I think that is the best, i don't know wtf he was eating at the time but the guy was insane
Dyers eve might be Lars' best performance. I wish Metallica played that song in 80s when the band was in its peak.

I like how you don’t mention Jason since the bass is non existent in the record lol

This part of blackened is the reason why I listen to metal
Cool. For me, the intro riff leading into the verse riff takes the cake as a guitarist
Blackened is up there as one of the baddest metal riffs ever … and blackened itself and the whole AJFA album is so wonderfully heavy
That breakdown after the solo gets me ready to run through a brick wall every time!
@@JusCuzz333 this is the correct answer. Lars changes the time signature, changing the way the riff sounds. It's the best part of the song.
