Greg in a calm voice, "Well they drove this truck down the back face of that mountain over there and proceeded to destroy most of the underside. The owner wants me to fix it up and get it running again cause you know, time is money. I got this 2×4 and some nails and a couple screws, let's get to work.." Two hours later he's driving the truck back up the mountain... Man I can just listen to your voice and my anxiety level goes to zero. I wish I had your skills and knowledge. I'm glad this channel came in my feed!!!
In the various earthmoving companies I've worked for, we've had one or more teams of mechanics/welders on the work site, or working in our workshops. But when the repairs were too complex, we had to call in Caterpillar personnel, and that cost a hell of a fortune Man ! So my friend, I don't know what your rates are, but I hope you're selling yourself at a premium for your splendid work ! Rock on Buddy !!
I'm on your time zone down here at the South Pole Station as almost everything comes to us (including us) through Christchurch, NZ. I'll be touring your country for a few weeks once I leave the ice in November - sure am glad I'm missing all that heat he is in! Currently we have a nice cool refreshing -75 down here.
Like Adam Booth had on a shirt years ago . ..."MACHINIST.....because badass problem solver is not a job title." All while on the edge of heat stroke. Great video showing real log jams in the field, and winning against serious hurdles.
Thank you for the video once again. Regarding welding with gas outdoors, like yourself, I do it all the time and the wind has got to be really whipping before I have to back up and punt. And no, I don’t and will NOT leave a weld with porosity behind. I have always attributed my ability to do it to using Miller Roughneck guns with the long 1/2” tapered nozzles and tapered contact tips. Now that Miller, in their infinite wisdom, has chosen to discontinue the Roughneck guns; I am transitioning to the Bernard BTB gun that is essentially a Miller Roughneck look alike. Even has the blue trigger. And this from a diehard Lincoln guy. On another note, I would like to see you do a video on how you got your start. I’m guessing maybe you worked for Cat at one time.
My goodness I tack my hat off to you welding grinding and line boring I that temperature 105+ degrees and that before you start doing any of this work so please don't worry about the ending of the video we understand the resons why you forgot to film it, thank you for this video and in this temperature you do a fantastic job.
After a Very Long Friday trying to get as many jobs done as possible ?? I'm finally sitting down now, eating Dinner and watching someone else doing all the work for change 😉 Thanks for taking time out of your day to bring us along 👍👍
All of that always gets hammered out. That machine has a lot of hours on it. Peak stress, and horrible operating conditions. Keeps you in work for sure.
This is a perfect opportunity for you to manufacture a shop made tool that has the adjustability you need and fits in those small spaces. Great repair work!!
Difficult job in a tight space, too bad that the milling head didn't fit. But in the end all that countsis that it's been done. And it came out great! Thx for showing! 👍👍👍
Love your channel! I run my own business in central Missouri, doing heavy equipment repair with some incidental welding. Years ago I worked for a rock crushing company and even though I don't consider myself an actual welder, I burned truckloads of 1/8 7018 rod during my time there. These days I primarily work on boom lifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts...stuff like that. Seeing your videos gives me "flashbacks" to the bad old days when I always had dirt gritting in my teeth... working my tail off in the 100+ degrees Sonoran desert in the Phoenix AZ area. That work you're doing in that heat is no "effing" joke! Much respect to you!
Wow 100+ I desert and still working on the equipment….good on you. Like your videos, entertaining, educational, and interesting. Hope you drowned a 6 pkg of beer after that job.
Always sounds easy when you say just got to do this or that but in reality it's a whole lot more .. as usual it looks like more time spent removing bits so you can get to it and I'm sure it wasn't a comfortable area to work let alone in that heat . Another job racked up and finished and on to the next one this for sharing buddy time now for a cold one cheers
I bought one of those ArcCaptain hoods you showed on your video, I can't believe how good it is, 27 dollars on Amazon and it's better than the Miller I have, true color is sweet, we'll see how long it lasts
Awesome approach!! Greg, Could you have gouged out a relief area to provide clearance for your facing tool? When finished, perhaps re-weld the gouged out area? Anyway, I have never seen anybody so professionally dedicated to doing everything right!! I’m very impressed with everything you do!!! Thanks Greg!!
Just a suggestion. At those temperatures you might want to dress like a Mexican chopping cotton. Cotton tee shirt, Ben Davis full length arm shirt and cotton coveralls, perhaps a cotton hat. With three layers your body is moist but not loosing fluids at the rate with just tee shirt thus preserving fluids. Carry in the truck some electrolyte pills, carton of coconut water. You get your self in a jam, drink chocolate milk. My son taken to hospital off the fire line, they fed him chocolate milk. I did not like it when i got heat sickness, you won't either. I like driving with ac off windows down, lost fluids on 2.5 hr service call plus the work. I use the AC now. If the smell gets intense with three layers, then loose some weight, cut out the sugars, fast foods, etc. I like your videos!
That front hitch mount had an update to change it out from a fabrication to a casting on some serial numbers, massive job cutting the old one out and installing the new section.
@@OFW the job calls for the engine to be removed but i made our scrap cutters (aussie slang term for welders lol) get down in there and we only removed the retarder. Then they forgot to grind the face enough where the cab pins to it and the machine had a huge "knock" as the cab moved on its isolation mounts. Had like 10mm gap one side and could not fit a tally ho paper down the other side. Redo with cab off to fix grrrrrr
Turn up the pressure on the gas that you used to shroud the weld When I was working for somebody else I did they have to pay for the gas so it didn't bother me to waste their money😂
It seems like the manufacturer should have an allowable go-no-go % of base metal loss of the A brackets so you could use your boring bar to face the inside edge and inside diameter so you could use a bush insert with a shim face to accommodate the loss of base metal. 13:30 Big knobs on your boring tool head. Usually a desirable attribute... not today huh.
First i will like why they call you for stupid thing like that.i work in calgary alberta most esrthmover contractor is inhouse job never field and second pm planning for this.this very expansive and downtime the scraper must move dirt in summer not strip apart field.i hope good learning people watching.thank video.😮

Working in the field in that kind of heat, I take my hat off to you sir👍
Perfect timing for another video, just settling in for a quiet Friday evening in New Zealand. Love your work!

@@502bbb At South Pole station, has no videos. Dude, come on!! I know there's not much there, but still.
The thrashing these belly scrapers endure is pretty mind blowing.
*On Fire Welding* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.

Nice work around on the facing. Thanks for taking the time to film while dealing with that kind of heat!
Man a complicated job seem frustrating you knocked it out of the park see ya on the next one 😊
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. Great work!!💪🏻

Stay safe Greg, stay hydrated. thanks for posting on top of everything else you have going on.
Understandable. Good filming in some tough conditions. Being good ain't easy. Appreciate the effort.
Taking time to video your work in that heat and still do great work in such tight quarters, much respect to you bro
Again you are a master at what you do.
All of that always gets hammered out. That machine has a lot of hours on it. Peak stress, and horrible operating conditions. Keeps you in work for sure.
Impressive skill set to accomplish the work that you do in the field.
This is a perfect opportunity for you to manufacture a shop made tool that has the adjustability you need and fits in those small spaces. Great repair work!!

Great job man! Huge respect for the hard work you put into every project! Love watching your videos!!!
Awesome
A tough and awkward job done in difficult conditions. Wwll young man.
Great video, thanks for taking us along. Never seen a scraper split before. 👍
You are a hard working man, have a blessed day América
Thanks for great explanation of what your doing. I really like the content and the knowledge you share.

Got to be one of the top 5 most uncomfortable repair positions I've seen you in
Nice work

good morning Greg.....good to see you so busy.....cheers from Florida, Paul
real problems, real solutions. awesome content man
You do amazing work it must be a game changer not having to deal with rust id be heating all those bolts or or torching them out
It seems like a high wear item like that would be removable. Have a couple on your shelf and machine it inside.

Such a great feeling when you come up with a solution for a problem and it works out. Makes it all worth it. Another great video dude
Dont know how you do it in that heat (thats hot work without it being 115) you always show us the very best in workmanship ) thank you !
Nicely done on the site work, my knees hurt just watching you! haha
Great job love watching your videos
Bad A.. as always and stay hydrated out there!!!!
Thank you for sharing and i learn a lot ,your explanation are easy to enderstand, great job 👍👍👍👍

I don’t think gouging would be a good idea

That washer mark, maybe they put that in there to try to take up some of the slop
Ты молодец очень много интересного для меня в твоей работе👍

I have done the update once.

Life is hard in the central valley 🥵
Have you ever heard of a planner gage,I think it would make measurements easier, good job, socks to work in that heat

What's up with Milwaukee tools? When you gonna showcase the mighty Ryobi? 🤣
I don’t think Ryobi would last in my environment hahahaha
Вітання вам
I do a dual shield Flux core and gas
115°... are you based out of the Texas/ Oklahoma area? We get whooped when it's 90° in Michigan but that's a temperature swing from -10° in February 😅
Central California
👍👍
Man, what the heck does it cost to do something like this, 4 plus thousand?
Not even half that.
So after looking at your videos which are really interesting...are you a diesel fitter by trade ?
Just a welder
Man, that job looks like a pain In the rear end.
🇺🇸👍🙂
Maybe that washer was intentionally placed there to take up the slack due to the one face wearing out.
Maybe. You just never know with these old machines.
Have those grease zircs ever been used?
so how does it work when another crew disassembles something like this, you do a specialized repair and orig crew reassembles it ?
Correct. I do my job and they put it back together.
Line boring ain't fun too watch just the same old vids but it's your thing that you've to do it as well
Once again, separating the men from the boys! LOL Stay safe!
Mine are crooked...............thanks western states
All these years I thought it was align boring...
🥤
What kinda boots do you wear I feel like I have tried them all and I am lucky to get 6-8 months out of a pair.
Right now I’m trying out Brunt boots they seem to be pretty good. I still haven’t found a boot that last over 8 months.
115 deg, what part of the country is this? What state?
