- What causes a water leaks in car? How do you fix it? How do you even check it?
In this follow up to the Lexus that cranked without a driver, we are fixing the water leaking into the dash and front floor of the vehicle. Always check your vehicle for water leaks by feeling the carpet in different areas. The best time to do this is either after you wash your vehicle, or after it rains. Catch water leaks early so they don;t cost you a fortune in damages. The customer informed me later that this was an on going problem with the carpet getting wet after a rainy day.

My wife has a 2002 RX300, she started to notice water on the floor boards on both the driver and passenger sides. Took it into her local auto repair she's used before, they showed her that it was those drain tubes, but they "don't do that sort of work." We'd have to take it to a body shop. Asked both our Lexus and nearby Toyota shops about it, they don't do the work either. They recommended a couple of shops, but after calling them, again "we don't do that work." One said they'd look at the car, but then said the interior was likely moldy (which it was a bit), and will only work on a "clean" car. Need to have a clean car to work on the tubes, but clogged tubes caused the water to back up into cabin, causing a mold problem. Dammit, this is central Florida in the summer, it rains practically every afternoon. Anyway...
Looked thru a number of RUclips videos, the work itself doesn't look very hard, I can't do any worse than letting the problem fester. Opened the sunroof, found the drain holes. Ran a little water into them, didn't drain from the bottom of the car, found dribbles going into the cabin. Tried a couple of different ways to clean the tubes, including a thick trimmer line, and blowing air down the tube. Still clogged, so removed the interior door trim and panels and found the tubes like in your video. Pulled them out to see the bottom end, and it was pretty clean. Ran the trimmer line down it, and it went completely through. Put a bowl to catch water, and ran some warm water down the tubes, the water ran fine and clean, including the "slurping" sound at the drain hole. So what the hell?!...
Poking down under the car behind the front wheel well, I found the opening where the water should come out. There appeared to be a compartment that the tube end hangs down into. The compartment has a little panel held in by two bolts. I had to remove some cowling to get to the bolts, but after all that, was able to open up the panel enough that a whole big mess of compacted leaves, sticks, and even some small rocks dropped out of the compartment. At least two large handfuls of stuff fell out. Got the water hose up into the compartment to clean it out, and noticed the tube end just barely visible once I pushed it back into place. Ran water down the drain hole again, and the water ran freely: poured in a cup, a cup came out! Put everything back together, ran water again, and again it all poured out. There is a similar compartment on both sides of the car for each drain tube, both should be thoroughly cleaned out.
TL;DR: it might not be clogged drain tubes, but rather the small compartment the drain tubes drain into is full of compacted material. I found likely 19 years of stuff in each compartment, once cleaned the tubes ran free. Sorry about the essay, but I thought it worthwhile to point out my experience with "clogged" sunroof drain tubes.
You are correct, many times you will find debris at the base of the exit. I sometimes have to go further as I did in a video of the Ford SUV.
Thank you so much I have the same problem. The essay is appreciated!
thank you for sharing. I'll check that for sure.
Unable to find this compartment…Could you describe in a bit more detail please?
Fixed my problem -- perfect! Thanks. Also, I poured some diluted bleach down the tube since that is what is recommended for other drainage tubes or pipes. And I used a compressed air can that you can get at office supply areas (wal-mart might have it) sold for cleaning electronics/keyboards. The advantage is it has a small tube you can push into the drainage tube to clear out more of the area over and through the initial bend in the drainage tube.
John Beaufait i see this post is a year old but has your car remained dry since you did this procedure? Hoping thats all that is wrong with my 2003 rx300 with sunroof going to try the drain test tomorrow
@@iamkazie9401 Yes it has. I expect this will be needed in the future though as dirt and sediment accumulate. I only wish I could do this with my sinus....
Thank you so much for this video! Who would have imagined that the leak on our driver side floor by fuse box would have been due to the clogged drains in the sun roof!
My husband searched and searched for the issue and I began to help by searching online. I found a myriad of reasons that water could be coming into the vehicle (driver side) and we did fix the packing around the driver side window, but that didn't fix the issue entirely. I showed him this video and in his engineering mind, he said, "I doubt this is the issue!" After another day of purposely pouring water on various parts of the front portion of the Lexus where we thought water may be coming in, we still couldn't identify the area. Admittedly, our faux pas was not concentrating on one area, and waiting for 10 minutes to see if water fell down by the fuse box again.
I mentioned that we should consider checking those drains in the sunroof (as indicated in this video) because sometimes the issue can be where you didn't look. Once we understood how the drains worked as explained in this video, it sort of made sense how water could be passing down from the sun roof to the floor on the driver's side. When he finally opened the sun roof, the front edge was full of water. He ran a very long, strong wire through the tube to try to clear it until the water drained from the bottom of the car. Then, he checked the passenger side and that tubing was clogged, too. He surmises that since the drain tube was clogged (car sits under a tree!), water collecting in the sun roof area had no place to go, hence it was going around the tube and falling down the fuse box around the cables and onto the floor.
You never know who your videos might help and we are both very grateful for your explanation of how this particular clogged drain would cause a massive water leak in the driver side floor. Thank you so much!!! :D
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. You are the reason I started doing these videos. It made my day to come home from the shop and read this. You really have no idea. God bless you. PS you need to be careful using wire to clear the tubes. You can damage them and cause another leak.
@@JoesAutoElectric Thank you so much for that tip about the wire! It wasn't a wire with an open tip but was capped. I will mention this to him, though. I am not sure where he got this wire, but he installs elevators, so our basement is filled with odd things. haha You certainly bring up a great point, though. :D
Thanks again...and keep making videos...you never know who you may help - and who may be close enough to bring you his or her vehicle!
@@JoesAutoElectric Good vid, another one I watched recommended weed eater line. I opted for compressed air and it did the trick! For those that don't have compressors tho...
This helped a lot in prep to fix my father in laws leaky Lexus. But I could watch you fix stuff correctly and talk smack on shops that do crap work all day! Thanks
On one hand it's good when a shop knows there limit. But it makes extra work for the good shops like you. Best of luck on getting more subscribers. It can be a fun trip. Your in a good community here. I've learned tons from other channels and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Thank you. Means a lot to us.
You have a good attitude on getting the tough ones that nobody
else wants/can repair Keep up the good work and great videos,
I always learn something new, thank you.
That is very nice of you to say. I edit out the bad words :)
Always asks questions indeed, that's the issue that happened w/ me. I brought my car in for leakage, and lexus priority service never asked me any question. Very disappointing. Thx for this.
Joe, just keep doing good work your production quality will get better too the more you get comfortable in front of the camera lol.
Thank you very much for uploading this video and for the amazing tips I will need to try this out asap! Thank You.
Thanks for watching
Really good video Joe. My Lexus IS 250 has been getting water inside the car on the floor boards and I couldn't figure out why after it rains but figured it had something to do with the sunroof. I'm hoping by trying this it fixes it. It's never done this before and started out of the blue. Mainly on the drivers side but on the other side too a little and there were damp spots on the panels of each side of the front windshield where the side airbags are between the windshield and side windows. Very strange. Everything seems to be sealed and I can't figure out where the water was getting in from. I'll try this.
It happened to mine also
How much do you charge for this? I’m on Staten Island.
GREAT JOB JOE
I HOPE YOU CHOPPED IT ALL OUT // I CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE
Although this video is 3 years old, if anyone can help me, id be grateful.
How many drains are there in total and where are they located, or are there just 2 drains both located in the sun roof, as shown here in the video?
Also, could this be the reason why I’m getting so much water / moisture building up in the inside of my windscreen during mild winter months? The amount of moisture seems unusual. BTW i haven’t noticed any water ingress within the cabin although I could be wrong. I’m just assuming if the drains are blocked, there’s no air flow and therefore lack of fresh air may be causing this?
Any advice would be grateful appreciated, thanks.
Thanks for the useful video.
Info on the back drains pretty please. A thought to check the antenna drain too. A little white grease from the gears in it plug the hose antenna drain hose and fill the wheel well..
Nice video on cleaning the sunroof drains because I always have water on the passenger side on the floor but now my sunroof is stuck closed when I press the switch I hear a noise but it's not opening so if you know how to get that open appreciate it thanks.
Did you ever get that fixed? I have the same exact issue. The passenger floor gets wet when it rains like crazy but my sunroof doesn't open. So how do I go about fixing it?
@@driveruws there may be a method to reset the sunroof system using a combination or sequence of buttons. Have a look on the forums for this.
Thanx for the follow up. 👍👍
On your outro, I might suggest noting how people may find you! At the very least, perhaps put this in the description where it is easy to locate. I see on your logo that you are in NJ (shame that you are not in this area!) and there is even a phone number, but most consumers would likely never see that. (I certainly didn't until I decided to write this!) At any rate, just thought I would mention that because you seem like a "find" of a mechanic. Cheers!
Thank you very much. I will see what I can do.
Joe THANK YOU for posting this video i have a 2003 Lexus RX300 with 154000 miles in very good condition i bought from a family friend one owner earlier this year and i noticed water on the passenger side front floor board while vacuuming i too have a sunroof and will try this method. I have a tiny craftsman compressor good for airing tires and i have a squeeze nozzle with thin tip for blowing dust or airing pool floats i may try that or even a can of compresssed air for cleaning computer components since its only the passenger side getting wet im going to start by testing drivers side drain first and see how it drains at bottom then ill test right side one quick question CAN YOU SEE THOSE DRAIN TUBES STICKING OUT OF UNDERSIDE OF CAR? wish me luck and you gained another subscriber!!
Thanks for this heads up. I have an appointment for this problem on a 2015 RX the car is certified so I will let them handle it . Only had it 6 months . It will be interesting to see what they find.
jmik50 did they fix it for free for you? We just took our 2016 NX200T in with this issue and they are saying it’s gonna be $800 to fix. I told them no thanks I’ll figure it out myself. Def doesn’t seem like $800 worth of work
My drains are clear. Frame is not clogged. Hose is not damaged. On front drivers side under some relays you can literally watch the cavity fill and overflow into the floorboard. Any tips on routing of the drain hose. I have extra I can connect if needed. I am even using a snake camera looking around in side the frame. Its drains out the bottom fine hut a lot of rain will fill the cavity and make it overflow. If I pour a half a bottle of water in quickly it will overflow.
I have a 2006 Lexus ES330 and both the front drains with one totally blocked and the other was almost closed up. My service manual shows two rear drains also that I haven't even looked for yet. When it rained I would get a couple drips from the seam on the headliner on both sides of the car. DO NOT USE any high pressure liquid or air because it will blow off the drain lines leaving the water to flood the car.
Thanks for this! I think it corrected the issue but when I was getting the compressed air nozzle into the drain, the spring attached to the black piece that moves up and down popped off one side and I can’t figure out how to reattach. Can’t find any tutorials.
Thanks man! Fixed my dads car today 😁😁
What about water in the rear passenger floorboard?
good video. i just went to check my drain hole.
Can you make a video of the back drains?
Great job ! How much would’ve cost to do it on a Lexus GS 300 ?
Great video. Keep it up
I have an issue where water is leaking in my trunk and it’s causing my stock amp to cut off so i have no volume or control of the volume. Any idea where i can go about diagnosing the leak?
Hello brother..! i try to find out engine sound proof and smell smoke in my cabin Lexus rx300 please tell me why.
Good job!!
Thank you, you just helped me 🇸🇪
Great!
What happens if the tube is blown off? I can see where the water enters the car.
My problem is with the rear drain holes. Need to know how to do them
Video is awesome thanks my dude!
Great video! Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
Awesome 😎
what if we block the drain on opening at roof?
I can’t find these draining holes on my sunroof ad my floor still gets wet. Anyone experienced this too?
Hey good evening, I tried the compressed air method and some water came out from those areas however after a long night of rain I found water on the inside of my windshield any idea of where that water can be coming from. (on my 2008 Lexus RX 350)
Make sure you did not knock the drain tube off for the sunroof.
@@JoesAutoElectric where would I look to see if it was knocked out of place?
Pull the pillar molding off. Though I do suggest having a professional do this work. You may do more harm than good.
@@123zalmy hey did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? I’m getting massive amounts of condensation on the inside of my windscreen too 🙁
It doesn't have drains in the rear of the sunroof
Mr Joe. I seals my sun roof with silicone..there still water on floor.
Well ..
@@JoesAutoElectric I took out all seats. Complete carpet console. Every thing. Seal sunroof. I'll take my time try to figure out.
👍thanks
Thanks heaps
Thank you!
Next, how do you get the smoke smell from your cig out of the car....LOL
Well, being that I wasn't inside the vehicle smoking I figure that is not an issue. Nice name.
Why leave the car engine running while doing the video?
Are you for real? Go hug a tree clown
Draino
What kind of cigarettes do you smoke. Lol
Make my own, would you like one?
Joe i sent you an email
Where is part one?
ruclips.net/video/nyKrQzQYGp4/видео.html
would not appreciate a mechanic with a cigarette working on my car
Well if the cigarette offends you, it would seem your issues run deep. bu-bye snowflake
I get it because I hate cigarettes BUT hate shady mechanics even more. He can smoke all damn day if he's a trustworthy mechanic!! He seems like a great guy and this video helped me tremendously!!I'm a woman, it's not that deep lol 😂😂
Seeing the water flowing out made me want to pee.
Really really bad.
