Probably one of the most underrated FPS's of the 90's. It came out at a time when Quake was out for over a year and Quake 2 was on the horizon so the idea of a 2d/3d shooter just wasn't as enticing and seen as wrongly inferior. But damn has it aged like fine wine. Unlike Quake 2, the amount of atmosphere, ambience, humor and gorgeous pixelated art really made it stand the test of time where replaying the singleplayer is always fun.
Also the humor. Reminds me of a time when comedy was actually fucking funny because people were more interested in being made to laugh than they were in calling things racist.

Awesome review. Shadow Warrior is by far my favorite Build Engine game, primarily because there were so many unique settings, making me look forward to each new level, wondering what it was going to look like and feel like. I particularly enjoyed the many different outdoor areas, some of which gave me a mild case of vertigo. I also loved the color palettes throughout. It was truly a beautiful game. And yes, it was a difficult game, but I managed to finish it, which is saying something, because usually if a game is too difficult, I just give up on it after a while. But the unpredictable level design kept me pushing onward, eager to see what was around the next corner. Extremely fond memories. I really need to give it another go.
Holy cow this is the first game I ever played as a kid and I had forgotten it's name. Recently I saw Shadow warrior 3 in some upcoming game videos and then started watching gameplay videos since it looked so good. And then this came up in my feed. God bless the youtube algorithm. This brings back so many memories, thank you !
I find Blood the most difficult of Built Engine games, it is down to how bloody quick hitscanners are in that game. Shadow Warrior has many traps and level gimmicks that made it difficult but enemies in general aren't as evil as in Blood. Ion Fury is very much like Shadow Warrior, and that is why I like it so much.
Played this a couple of years ago. Never heard of it back of the day. Great game. Lots of fun. The build engine does something for shooter game that's quite unique.

Cool review! My cousin and I spent dozens if not hundreds of hours making levels in the build engine for DN3D, throughout several years. Then we were very excited when I got SW, mostly because there were new effects and advances in the Build engine. But we ended up under the impression that the game showcased some effects that weren't possible to replicate in the Build software. But we were kids, internet wasn't what it is today, and we didn't even read English at the time. So I mean, who knows.

as a 40+ year old with wonderful memories on those old school shooters i have to say: i fucking love your channel man! keep up the great work.
10:32 Flaming rock from the volcano killed you
It is so crazy to have a rematch with the snake and Sumo man, but end up being killed by the volcano
But you cant denied that fighting on volcano isnt badass
@@nguyenthenam1657 Zilla could never ask for pizza, but put envy in the hearts of many Bond villains.
Badass vulcan fortress.
1:01 ah yes i too talk by moving my teeth up and down
Conrad Pooh and his Dancing Teeth!
Shadow warrior felt tighter than duke3d
I remember getting this when it came out, totally blew me away, still have the big box version.
Much preferred games from this era. Glad to be old enough to experience them first hand
OG Shadow Warrior is one of the greatest of all time! I just finished a play through recently and, yeah, its brutally difficult, but so fun.
i played this everyday after school this takes me back wow
This game give you so much testosterone, by the end. You'll look like 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger
That opening line is one of my favourite in all shooters. That and DOOM 2016's opening line
ehi gman what about a look back to the first reboot of Shadow Warrior of 2013? i would love to hear you get more in detail into it , btw great video as always
@@rubz1390 yeah , that is why i was suggesting to update it , i would like to hear a more in dept analisis
@@whirligig_saw with all respect, gmanlives not good in deep analysis. But yea, SW2012 review is kinda biased
Hey if you're not playing the dos version, landmines sometimes are hidden underground. Like their physical sprites are hidden underground - they are sprinkled throughout and meant to be visible/shootable
"...And I challenge anyone to find a fault in a weapon that lets you fire small nuclear missiles"
Some cases you get yourself blown away if you're not careful unless there's a conveniently placed wall to go behind. I was about to bring up Turok & Bloons Tower Defense since they also had nukes.
The Classic Complete version is free on GOG. They also gave away Shadow Warrior 2 about a year ago.
Shang Hai'ed Heist. Tokyo Showdown. Brooklyn Botanical Gardens of Badassery. (unofficial name ideas for future map packs).
I just found John galt the voice of lo wang passed away yesterday rip
Old is always gold.
Love all old games
Couldnt even finish the first level when I first played this. 8 or 9 year old me didnt knew that you had to aim with the mouse. But I beat the first level after awhile with the arrow keys, ctrl and space
The railgun firing effect is the same sound effect as used in vehicle shooting rockets in the PC game, Total Annihilation (TA). Also, the humming sound is from the TA home screen.
Always a good day when we get an honoring of one of the finest FPS of the 90's.
And Lo Wang is larger than life, what a Chang!
Shadow Warrior is really funny, finding the secrets in this game is a must for new players
One of the best FPS games of my youth. Right up with Dukem Nukem 3d, Heretic and Hexxen.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STEAM: if you just use the shortcut on your desktop to play the combo edition you won't have access to the expansions, you need to press play game from the steam interface to get the options. I actually didn't know the expansions were even bundled until years later when Civvie covered the game.
Ahh, better than acupuncture.
The build engine does something for shooter game that's quite unique.
one of the things that I liked in the game (that you didn't mention) was that you can regain health by punching the wooden Dummies
10:30
It was the sheer badass-ness of the game that killed you. You'd be surprised how often that happens.
Nice work gman, I'm a huge (french) fan of your work. We need a 《most annoying enemies in fps games》 video. Im sure you want to do it anyway (mentioned it in several videos)
I'll patreon support as soon as possible
Good ol Shadow warrior, the beat of the best!!!
I gotta go to jail this evening but I sure am glad I got to see this first. Thank ye, Gman. I love ye.
I am loving the improvements to the channel, making less reviews but more quality ones is really nice, I love the channel but some older videos aren't (IMO) as quality but damn dude you make great vids
Maybe my favorite bit has to be the fact every weapon is not just good for something, but has its own actually good thematic gimmick too. Particularly evident in the first remake too, geezus I love the sword and Ki powers in it
Imagine a Nuts.wad style level, but it's all hornets. *My nightmare*
when he had the heart weapon and the low wang clone said to him "You have no honor" i lost it. The guys that made this game had a sense of humor.
So I mean, who knows.
some of those deaths were because of the way the mines are being placed, Usually under the ground. Which means you never see them till they go off.
(some more names for creators & fans) To the Death in D.C. Yeah Ninja can fight anywhere, Lo Wang Ninja on Vacation, No Surrender in San Fransisco, Shadow Warrior Deadly Combat in the Caribbean.
Played thru shadow warrior recently for the first time and really enjoyed it! It held my attention well and had me hungry for more and I also played thru all the additional episodes and expansions. Highly recommended
