"Send in the Clowns" is a song written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music, an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night. The song is a ballad from Act Two, in which the character Desirée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. Among other things, she looks back on an affair years earlier with the lawyer Fredrik, who was deeply in love with her, but whose marriage proposals she had rejected. The song is a metaphor for the moment in a play when things become farcical and the clowns are sent in to entertain the audience. The lyrics "Don't bother, they're here" mean that "We are the fools". The song is a show business reference, which is to say, "This show isn't going well, so let's start giving them our best jokes!". The song is a song of regret, and it's a song of a lady who is too upset and too angry to speak - meaning to sing for a very long time.

Amber saying the song is made for the stage... yes, literally. It was written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music.
In the musical, the song is performed by Desiree, an ageing actress whose career has been reduced to touring small stages in small towns. She's reflecting on her life choices and where they have led her. That's why the tone of the song is one of regret and melancholy.

My favourite versions and by actresses, who played the part and sang it, on stage, are by Glynis Johns (the original) and Judy dench (a UK production). Both on youtube and hit the pathos much better than this version. I don't mind Judy's work - just never bought any, as I preferred the originals of most of what she recorded.

    Lyrics:
    Isn't it rich?
    Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground
    You in mid-air
    Send in the clowns
    Isn't it bliss?
    Don't you approve?
    One who keeps tearing around
    One who can't move
    Where are the clowns?
    Send in the clowns
Just when I'd stopped opening doors
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
    Sure of my lines
    No one is there
    Don't you love farce?
    My fault, I fear
I thought that you'd want what I want
    Sorry, my dear
    But where are the clowns?
    Quick, send in the clowns
    Don't bothеr, they're herе
    Isn't it rich?
    Isn't it queer?
    Losing my timing this late
    In my career?
    And where are the clowns?
    There ought to be clowns
    Well, maybe next year...

There's a very specific meaning to the phrase, "send in the clowns." In the circus, if something is going wrong, they send in the clowns to distract the audience. The character that sings it in the play is an actress, so she would be familiar with this show business term and use it while discussing her relationship in shambles.

Others have made great comments, but none of the "Whales and Nightingales" album. "Farewell to Tarwathie" where she sings with humpback whale songs, is stunning. Another stunning one is "Albatross" from the Wildflowers album. Lastly , her tribute to Duke Ellington on the "Judith" album entitled "Song for Duke." I'll stop there.

Amber, this was written for the stage! It's from Stephen Sondheim's 1973 Broadway musical, "A Little Night Music". From the 1960's into the 2000's, he was arguably the most important, and certainly the most innovative, writer for Broadway (he wrote both music and lyrics). You could--I'm not necessarily saying you should--spend a month reacting to versions of this Sondheim song alone. Cabaret singer Bobby Short (you should check him out) first picked it up for his shows, and then Sinatra recorded it, and then Judy Collins, and from there it was covered by everybody from Sarah Vaughan and Barbara Streisand to Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, and Tom Jones. Other Sondheim musicals include "Sweeney Todd", "Into the Woods", "Sunday in the Park with George", "Follies", and my favorite, "Company".

Once again Amber has nailed it! This is from the Broadway Musical " A Little Night Music" written by Stephen Sondheim. I watch everyday and honestly look forward to your posts. My only thing with you guys is you're dipping occasionally into the true classics and you're missing the really good stuff.
Before the 60's almost every recording artist sang songs from "The Great American Songbook" and they were the best songs ever written, why? Because they were there first, the melodies they wrote were the purest and the most beautiful. Once they wrote a classic song that combination of notes was gone.
So please, more Crooners, more 40's and 50's (Pop), and more tradional Jazz like Ella Fitzgerald, more Frank the greatest interpreter of the songs, more pre-rock music from the "Lounge Music" era of the 50's. Here's a female friday for you, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, and J.P. Morgan! There is an entire planet of music you've barely touched, and it's more complex, more emotionally charged, and the best music ever written.

The one thing that surprised me was when he admitted to using a rhyming dictionary all the time.
