- Στο βίντεο αυτό σας παρουσιάζω τον λόφο Φιλοπάππου. Εστιάζω με τα πλάνα μου στο ταφικό μνημείο του Φιλοπάππου, που από αυτόν πήρε και το όνομά του ο λόφος. Επιπλέον παρουσιάζονται και πλάνα από τα μονοπάτια τα οποία επιλέγει πολύς κόσμος για περπάτημα καθώς και πλάνα από την Ακρόπολη που είναι ορατή από πολλά σημεία του λόφου !!
PHILOPAPPOS HILL
This hill is the highest of the 3 hills located west of the Acropolis. It was originally called ΄΄Muses΄΄ Hill which according to the ancient traveler Pausanias, it was named after the ancient poet Museos who lived, taught and was buried in it. To the north east of the top of the hill there are some finds that are presumed to belong in the Tomb of the Hero of Moussaios.
However, a more likely version for this name it is the identification of the space with the mosque of the Muses to which the hill must have been dedicated.
In the 2nd century A.D. Gaiuw Julius Antiochus Philopappus, prince of Kommagene in Upper Syria and benefactor of Athens, erected on the top of the hill of the Muses his grave monument, 12 m high, which from then on dominated the area and gave his name to the hill.
The monument, built of pentelic marble over a porouw-stone base, is divided into two zones. The lower has a frieze showing Philoppapos in achariot with a retinue of rod-bearers and the upper has niches, of which the middle shows an enthroned Philopappos and in the second his grandpa. In the right niche, no longer, was depicted the founder of the dynasty,΄΄king Antiochos Seleukos Nikator΄΄.
The monument, intact up to the 15th century, has gradually fallen victim to vandalism and natural phenomena. It was partly restored on 1904 by K. Balanos.
The towering and commanding position of the hill over against the Acropolis served, in the age of myth, as a stronghold of the Athenians against Amazons and was later used as a strategically significant fortication in important military operations.
Philopappos Hill is one of the most popular hills in Athens for walking, as it has beautiful paths and from many points it has a view of the Acropolis.

Great place, a little out of the way from the touristis. Amazing view of the Acropolis.
Yes it has a very nice view over the hill! On one side you see the acropolis and on the other side your gaze reaches the sea! In the afternoon you can enjoy a fantastic sunset!
