EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES
MARIUS:
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables,
Now my friends are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about tomorrow,
And tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn.
And they rose with voices ringing.
I can hear them now.
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Phantom faces at the window,
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.
Thanks for watching!!! Видеоклипы
"My friends, don't ask me what your sacrifice was for"
That's where I break. That is where the song crosses from mourning to despair. It is no longer just the pain of losing brothers that died for a cause. He must also face the reality that they failed.
This was the last of the barricades. The people did not rise. It truly is a grief that can't be spoken.
"Let otheres rise
To take our place
Until the earth is free!" -Enjorlas
Everyone in the theater / entertainment world really liked this........but you guys don't realize how well he truly nailed it. I returned from Afghanistan in late 2011. No I wasn't fighting with muskets in a civil war but everything from the lyrics to his delivery....
I can't NOT burst into tears every single time. He did such a good job......helping me say what I don't know how to.
I love how he sings this song. what an in depth voice he has!
Everytime I watch this movie, I cry within the first 15 minutes, and when I reach this scene I bawl my eyes out. This is one of my favorite movies of all time
omg, I thought I was the only one!
Same here
I break everytime the part "Became their last communion. On this lonely barricade at dawn. Oh my friends, my friends forgive me...." It stabs me in the heart every single time.
It's sad how so little people can relate to this song. After typhoon Yolanda, I was one who survived. And some of my friends died while I lived. When I heard this song, I couldn't stop crying and I repeated it day after day as a memory of my good friends.
+Silvers Gamz strength to you, bro...
"Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me what your sacrifice was for"
I always lose it there. They sacrificed themselves for nothing :'(
I love how the music doesn't start with his voice: it illistrates how alone he is.
As a Combat Wounded Marine Veteran and survivor of Vietnam. I am now the lone survivor of my buddies I served with. Now consumed with Survivors guilt this song goes to the depths of my pain. Semper Fi
Oh... There are no words I can think of to encompass that feeling... All the best to you and all others..
Spot on acting, wonderful scene and voice, couldn't stop the tears falling down my cheeks at the cinema. So much raw emotion!
It's impossible to listen and see this without tears.
Can't even start to explain how much I cried this scene. Through the whole film I found Eddie kinda weak, but he redeemed to no end in this scene. Was beautiful, powerful and ridiculously emotional, and I cried my eyeballs out.
I cannot say I would have that courage but all of Europe is looking at you in admiration!!
This is the song that made me cry the most... he acted it so well.
i always thought it was "empty chairs AND empty tables" woah
Fabulous, as was the whole film, I was blown away! Incredible film.
What a voice so full of emotion FABULOUS
This version of this song gets me every time I hear it. Eddie Redmayne is the only Marius that brings me to tears.
I probably look so stupid singing and doing faces while listening this.
When I was young a lot of my college friends fought against military junta and never be seen no more just like the lyric of this song.
When the movie was finally released to Korea I was one of first to go see
Les miserables and cried like little baby remembering my friends gone and never be seen. This is my most painful memories I should carry it to my last breath.
And further Korean are not enjoying that much of freedom nor democracy as our young dream has gone failed
wow...I honestly think that this character really brings out how well he can act...its amazing how emotional he got and how he fixed the audience to the screen...nearly made me cry but I just wanted to go up to him and give him a hug!!!! :(
OMG! I cried like a baby during this song. He was so incredible. I have watched the DVD many times since buying it last week. I could watch it over and over. He is my favorite Marius. Samantha is the best Eponine for me.
Oh Lord how can I stop this feeling of grief! Eddie you make my eyes pour tears that never happen before in any movie that I watched... Even thought the French revolution did not succeed, but the words sang in this musical film is so powerful - Enough to break the stone-heart and let every man pour tears in their eyes.
I actually cry every time I hear this song. Just the power in voice sends shivers down my spine, he is a wonderful singer and and amazing actor. This song just makes me wanna find him and just give him a BIG HUGE HUG!
So far as you remember them, their lives were not in vain. Sympathies from Finland, my good man.
I cried so bad at this part. The song is just amazing
Me too!
This is the best vocals for this song I've ever heard, but then you add his elite acting to it and .... it is just the most powerful scene in the whole movie.
What got me about the whole of the movie, was the people that could sing and act, and those who could act but not sing, still carried the emotion and the story with their songs without having to be carried on those areas. I agree many here were not singers, but their portrayals were above par and excellent. Yes Eddi did a fantastic job on this song, but I think they all did as well. Fantastic show!
I love this song!!! I can't help going on listening to it again and again...
Thank you Victor, you've helped us in understending our own nature!
Oh my gosh! Eddie Redmayne is extraordinary I love him so much he's so hit he's like perfect and he did an amazing job! Les miserables is my favorite movie and musical ever!✨❤
Oh my gosh when he sings 'yet, tomorrow never came' I just BAWL
He's great! One of my favorite singers in the musical
this part for sure as well as when Javert looks over the dead bodies, pauses on the little boy just as the musical part corrosponding to "he's like the the son I never knew" plays. I broke down like a little baby in both sceens.
This song is amazingly gripping and emotional on multiple levels. I love that you have more than just this one done up and in the description. =)
What an incredibly heart-wrenching song
Eddie did a fabulous job. I cannot listen to this song without crying. Heart wrenching song and he did it so well.
i cry my heart out every time i see this part
For me it just made it so much more heartbreaking. Because I was waiting all through the song for them to appear and they didn't and it just made me sort of realize that they were dead and I honestly felt just like Marius.
My friend thank you for pointing out the reason for people like me who cried through movies like this are not weaklings or wimps, but have actually had lost in past and still have a memory and care for our fallen friends(family for me).
this song makes me cry every single time i listen to it. I love it so much. This man is unbelievably talented.
How can you not cry listening to this?!
I break down and get chills everytime he sings "oh my friends my friends dont ask me what your sacrifice was for"
This performance makes me cry everytime. He definitely showed feeling in this performance.
One of my favorite moments from the film. Brilliant, he is.
I saw this in the cinema last year. Although you can pick fault with the movie (ie Russell Crowe), Eddie's singing and acting of this song is brilliant. I'm not surprised he's just won major awards in other movies.
Imagine just getting into character to sing this. The unbelievable pain felt. You hear it in his voice and it never fails to make me cry. Crying even now. I couldn't handle it when I first heard it. I had to leave. I went on for hours crying.
OMG, my heart broke, again and again.
He sings this song so amazingly. And although I don't like most of the covers from this movie, this has to be one of my favorites. He's a great singer.
Thank you SO MUCH!
Yeah, it was awesome. You could really feel the grief not only from his voice but also in his face
the part i break when i watch this movie :( but it's a great song! he's great!
Why does everyone hate on Russell Crowe? I personally absolutely adored him
me too love him so much
This isn't Russell Crowe, this is Eddie Redmayne
thank you very much for this video.
I love his voice and him acting in the movie.
I love this song and his voice totally sells the emotion of the song
It always made me cry! So beautiful.....
I've seen the movie about 3 times and I always cry, I don't usually cry when watching a movie but this one has so many feels it gets me every time...
I just can't bear it, listening to Eddie Redmayne(Monsieur Marius) singing such a beautiful song, sooo emotionally(crying) HE'S THE BEST EVER
i loved his voice. precise and flows like melody itself.
Same here i love this musical so much.
i hardly cry for songs but this makes me cry like hell...:S
Standing ovation for him!!!! Amazing job! That kid can blow!
these words cut deep..... deeper than any blade could.
I love most of the sings and this is no exception
I'm talking about Eddie Redmayne. He's so flawless. :)
It's amazing, think of the fact that he has never sang professional before
all the miserable's song are awesome
i love this song
Esta cancion me emociono muchísimo, Eddie tiene una de las voces mas puras y perfectas que eh escuchado,
I died about dozen times.
Unfortunately, people who can't sit through "movies where people sing" don't know how much they miss in their own emotions
HIS ACTING WAS AMAZING.
this song gets me everytime
this is a great scene!!
I can relate to this song a bit........... I knew 6 people who died in one year, even though I wasn't really close with any of them. Recently, my childhood best friend was shot and killed--she was one of the kindest people I ever knew. Sometimes I think "why do I deserve to live, when she and so many other great, kind people are gone?" Love this song so much.
I agree, It's a beautifully powerful scene in a powerful movie
this gives me chills
that is so true i love this movie so much
A lot of my friends and I have come from not so great households and have attempted suicide and we have one friend who seems a bit stronger than the rest. We're doing Les Misérables as a play this year and he got cast as Marius and I cry every time he sings it because sometimes I feel like one day he might relate a bit too much to this song
God, I'm crying like... So much! Every time I watch this, I cry a bit more... Or a lot...
thanks
I agree! the lyrics sum up marius' story so well.
This was definitely one my favourite songs of the movie/play.
Though Eddie did one superb job with this, I personally think Michael Ball has the best version of this song in the Complete Symphonic Recording.
I'm not crying.. There's something in my eye like a branch or a tree.
Oh yeah that is such a sad moment when all the dead bodies are just in a row, so cold and still! I cried loads too :'(
So beautifull :-)
I always loose it when he says "my friends, dont ask me what your sacrifice was for...empty chairs at empty tables."
crying so much right now
I loved the seen but wish he had shown the other part of the emotion. There is grief and pain but there is anger in Marius, anger for the waste of his friend that died for ideas that nobody followed, anger at himself for being alive. Michael Ball on the dreamcast version gave this mixed of emotion and gave in my view a more complete sense of the feelings of Marius. Still love this version
This character is not my favorite, ever since I read the book. Every musical I see I hold a grudge, but this movie, when he sang this song, it was like my heart was being ripped from my chest. I know I wasn't the only one in the theater bawling like a baby.
I realy like this guy
I agree with you. fantastic movie
god, I cried soo much at this scene.
If you'll excuse me I'm going to cry now.
Wow!!
I love him
"And I can hear them now." was the best sound I ever heard
I didn't truly connect to this character until this song. Half the movie I thought he was a flat, undeveloped character, and then this song came near the end. And I could see his character evolve into an interesting person. That's how powerful this song is.
This part has a special grief when we Brazilians remember the 240 young students dead in a fire at a nightclub last January. The place had no emergency exits, fire extinguishers and other safety items.
Thank you. ;,-(
i'm freakin cryin!
