Everyone always says "And I'm Javert!" but no one ever says "How's Javert?"
Javert is one of the most damage characters of the novel/movie, imagine living the world where you thought what you do is right and reality just slap you harder than puberty
Everyone always asks to hear Javert sing but no one asks if you want to Javump into a river 😔
he's pretty dead
U so silly...
People often forget that Javert is one of the misérables as well.
thanks for the comment! i'm not aware of that!
Who isn't
Exactly!
Was he in the parade at the end when valjean died? I don't remember seeing him...I know it was alot of people but they zoomed in on everyone
@@orangejalisa no, but he should've been
Javert: *is spared by Valjean*
Javert: *commits suicide and dies anyway*
Val-Jean:Am I a joke to you
He refused to do the Christlike thing & forgive Valjean for his crimes & to be grateful to him for sparing him
of all 'the miserable ones,' i find javert the saddest. he's offered forgiveness, mercy, and grace, and he can't accept it. he won't accept it. the others either accept it, aren't offered those gifts, or, in the case of the thenardiers, bring their misery upon themselves. he chooses to turn his back on the opportunity for redemption. the song is heartbreaking, and the way it's written in the book is absolutely gut-wrenching.
and yes, they're both enough to make a person bawl.
Wow. I'm currently re-watching all of these little snippets of the movie because in my theology class we watched it to learn about the sacrament of baptism... I am now writing my essay at 11pm and this helped my wording quite a bit, thank you! XD
I'm so happy to hear that! You're quite welcome. I'm now sitting here trying to find the tie-in between this movie and baptism. I'm curious as to what you ended up with. I hope it turned out well! God bless!
Well, one example is when Valjean ripped the paper near the beginning with his name or prison number (can't recall what exactly it was) on it and threw it in the wind, he was practically "shedding" and "cleansing" himself of his old life to begin a new one, like how in the sacrament of baptism, one dips themselves into the holy water to cleanse themselves of Original Sin to begin a new life with God.
There are many other examples, but that was the first one I wrote about XD
Vianna M love it! i'll give you an 'a'. :)
I should like to join the many, MANY people defending Crowe. Having only seen the film when it was on TV last week, I immediately started watching it again and again (on recordings) and was so impressed by his portrayal! Unlike the stage version (who, from the clips I've seen, is a bit more psychopathic than this version) I get the impression that Javert didn't actually know he was going to commit suicide when he started singing. Round about the last verse, he realised it was his only option, because all of his values and core beliefs had been destroyed.
you can sort of tell right after he sings "that granting me my life today" that he figures out that he has no other option. Russell Crowe's emotion in this song is amazing
with you all, ong live russel crowe, listening to the song right now
He honestly isn't bad, just that his style doesn't match the other broadway singers in this movie.
By psychopathic you mean Crowe won’t act
I think ”And the stars are black and could” was the final straw for him
I don't see why people disliked this scene, I think Russell Crowe did a good job at portraying Jarvet. Namely the speed and pitch of his words truly portray the feelings of fear and confusion Jarvet must have been feeling when he learnt that the law is not infallible and how that must have shaken his very core beliefs that he had clung too his entire life.
Adoss shall rule all
+Adoss shall rule all dislike? it's my favourite! especially "there is nothing on earth that we share! It is either Valjean or Javert!"
Ja aka Sztukmistrzzwarszawy Yes!! That was awesome but I also love Philip Quast's version where he shouts "It is either Valjean or Javert" instead of singing it....
Russel crow has one of the best voices I had heard and the Broadway people dont like it because it is too musically the folk rock genre. When I went online I was shocked to see how much shame Russel crow got for his style I had
Aden Michaelson I agree strongly!!!👌
I love how sinister the music turns when he decides that he is going to jump.
creepy lady
Dud yess
I love how the funny the sound is when he jumps and cracks his neck
And then.... da crunch! >:D
@@engineergaming5989 i think it was his back XD
The instrumentation is incredible. 2:20 really sells the feeling that he’s truly losing his mind, that the internal conflict is becoming too much for him.
It truly is unsettling how fast the music changes
After having my friends say they hated his performance then going over a TON of other actors do the part, all I have to say is he puts more Soul into it rather than just trying to belt out the lyrics as fast as he could. Its not about the quality of his "Singing" but the feel it lets off. Well played Russell Crow. Well played.
"There is nothingness earth that we share."Earlier:"I am from the gutter too!"
oh shit
Ben Beckstrom But in his eyes he chose the right side of the law. He made himself a "new man" while Valjean stayed a criminal. Therefore he doesn't consider himself anything like Valjean. That's how I interpret it.
I smell conflict lol
@@christopherlavs1698 I agree, but what about nationality? What about gender?
rose yuen YOU’RE A FUCKING IDIOT.
I cry every damn time watching this part: I feel like Javert is the most realistic character, a man who has nothing else than the law, and he thinks what he does is following the Lord's path. He is so obsessed by catching 24601 because he thinks no one can change, who steal once will steal forever: there is no way to be right and wrong at the same time. Saving his life, Valjean did something right but Javier can't understand why he did it because, as he said, "It is either Valjean or Javier"
Javier, a man who tried to be as perfect as the law is in his vision of the world suddenly understands he have to make a choice that could change his whole vision of life, a man who suddenly understands he is the villain who thougt to be right. Javier is not a hero, but neither a villain, just a poor man, a misérable who needs to escape from his life. I think Crowe was great, I love his voice but he is also a great actor and his Avier was just so real. I love it.
Am I the only who cried at this part in the movie, even just listening to it makes me tear up.
I still laugh at his singing throughout most of the film but he really shines on this part but it is mainly due to the excellent soundtrack.
I too shed tears.
I full out sobbed at this part
What really got me was the ending scene. I was bawling like a baby with no candy.
Sabrina Johnson Though i didn't really cried, the first time i saw it i spent the next two days pretty depressed. Javert's life was so sad when you think about it :(
Singing wise, crow isn't doing anything wrong. On it's own his voice is actually quite developed and is excellent for musical vocalization. I think the main issue people have with him is the fact that he doesn't sound like the others. Which is true. But i don't see that as a valid reason to necessarily hate him. If he was a legitimately terrible singer, than it would be an insult to the character. But he's really not, just think of this as a cover song. Different artist with a different style. Not bad, but not the same as the "original". I'd rather he sing the way he can than try and force himself to do something he can't.
I completely agree
I don't even get what people are saying, it sounds nice. Is he an Opera singer? No, but that's the point, no one really is...I think....maybe the Priest who I think was Jean in the Live shows. Russel's voice in my opinion was better than Hugh's.
It isn't 100% his singing people make fun of, it's the phenomenal miscasting. He sings folk and country, and they chose him to sing like a broadway actor.
EXACTLY!! I dont see how people hate it
Edward Morris I think his voice fits great with the others. It adds a nice contrast. He is very gifted musically
I was so afraid that the sound of his body hitting the edge would be included. So glad it's not. I wish he hadn't jumped.
Javert had to jump. He was a man of black and white, and was shown shades of gray. He couldn't handle it, so his choices were either commit suicide, or go insane from doubt and regret.
thorntail01 Not really, it was very accurate about Javert. He was a man who believed that the law was always good and that criminals were always bad... Usually there are few exceptions to that rule (enough that Javert could do his job without guilt), but in the case of the French revolution everyone was just trying to survive, which put strain on him as he had taught himself to think that these people were "bad". And then Valjean showed him (and many others) mercy.
I think in a situation like that, any "man of the law" would be put in a difficult situation.
I love this scence
everyone has there own version of "right and wrong" i personally believe that there's is no such thing that the path that we take is just that a path a journey a choice that there is no wrong or right just a choice everyone is allowed to believe what they believe it's just the wall's we put on our mind to make our mind clearer in a world where nothing is known to give a purpose in a world where we have non a reason to live.
I wish he didnt too
It must suck for Crowe to be compared so much. It's not about extravagant notes in stuff like this, it's about character. Quast was more brassy and angry it seems, and Crowe was more somber and depressed. Just because Quast can sing with more flourish and vibrato doesn't make him a better singer, or a better Javert. It just makes him a different one. (Not saying that Quast is bad though, as he did play the role wonderfully, but it's worth pointing out)
I think Russell Crowe was perfect for the role. The worst casting was Eddie Redmayne as Marius. After watching the Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary quite a few times Alistair Brammer would've fit the role perfectly.
@@deidreshand4641 It's been three years, but THANK YOU. Eddie Redmayne was miscast? Yes. And while I'm here, Hugh Jackman sang off key in so many instances in the film (but he got the benefit of the doubt said it was his 'acting') and Amanda Seyfried's super soprano tones was so technical and un-emotional (though I usually like her).
"That granting me my life today, this man has killed me even so." My favorite line in the song
Comments=
1% omg I hate this because Russel Crowe can’t sing
99% OMG WHY IS EVERYONE IN THIS COMMENT SECTION SAYING HE CAN’T SING HE IS AMAZING
😉 Javert is my favorite character in Les Mis because of Russel Crowe
2:32 Damn, that intense orchestral version of Stars hurts me, but I love it.
People say that he cant sing, but I can think of no one that could portray the role of Javert better!
The worst and best part of this is how the instrumental to stars plays right before he falls, because the song that redeems him to us also condemns him to death and I think that's really meaningful.
I love this song so much
Same
Damn, your bitmoji is sexy ;)
Aw thanks!
I love it too!
I normally don't watch musicals, but this movie was pretty amazing and Russel Crowe did outstanding.
Yes, every word is correct
@@flintlockwood25 It was a movie, so it'd have been recorded again and again until it was correct... it's not like it was a live production where you only have once chance to get it right.
Ugh. I hate this scene. I mean, don't get me wrong. Beautiful music, wonderful lyrics, and I won't even begin to rant about how much I love Russell Crowe's voice. It's just that through the course of the play I fall in love with the complexity of Javert's character and I desperately want to see him change. The line "the stars are black and cold" sends chills down my spine every time because it's like the last bit of proof that Javert has no idea what he's doing if he's not carrying out the law. He has bred every shred of humanity out of himself, just as Valjean did before the play even started. Valjean is given forgiveness and wants to share it with the world, including Javert. Javert has never been forgiven for anything before and feels he has had to prove himself from the second he left the prison in which he was born. Arresting/killing Valjean after he came out of the sewer would have been the only way he could possibly prove himself, and he never would have been able to live with the fact that he let his worst enemy go free. I don't know if this was brought up in the book, but I bet Valjean was greatly saddened when he heard of Javert's death. Valjean had an open and honest love for everyone, and Javert had no idea how to deal with that fact. He couldn't deal with the fact that he had been wrong about Valjean for the past 30 or so years before he died. I wonder if Javert's suicide can be considered his forgiveness of Valjean, considering that he even says "There is nothing on earth that we share; it is either Valjean or Javert." Could he possibly have meant by that "you were right this whole time, so my death is really all that stands between you and true freedom"? Just my thoughts on it. I love Javert and hate that he has to die.
That was very touching and well thought out but he says "It's *either* Valjean or Javert" so if he was thinking that then what was the other side of his way of looking at it? What other way of looking at it could he have possibly thought about? I agree he may have been thinking exactly what you said but if "it's either VALJEAN OR JAVERT" then what's the JAVERT side he was so desperate to keep that he jumped off and killed himself just so he didn't become a part of the Valjean he wanted to kill for so many years?
Les Miserable really makes you think, whoever first wrote it was a bloody genius....I wish I could write stories as good as that...even without the limitations of real world realistic-ness I wouldn't be able to make something nearly as great as this...oh well, some things are just too crazy to see yourself being able to do, just those who go for it anyway that make it there but I don't think I can really see myself as a writer at all really.
The only other way to figure out what Javert was thinking is to look at the golden fact about written characters, they are often based on the writers personality and maybe even their experiences are mixed in so if there's something that relates to Javert's suicide scene then we could find the answer there sadly as I am 15 I was not around when this was popular and first came out.
Do you know of what the answer could be?
I am 15 as well and I have recently read the book. Victor Hugo, the original author, said that Valjean and Javert were based on a police officer who spent time on the chain gang as a teenager then decided to become an officer. The only character Hugo admits to basing off himself was Marius. My idea behind the "either Valjean or Javert" line is kind of like what J.K. Rowling did with Harry Potter: "neither can live while the other survives", but I like where you're going with the idea that Javert had to kill himself to kill his inner Valjean. It makes a lot of sense when compared to all of his other actions throughout the play and the book. Thanks for your thoughts; I hadn't considered some of those things before.
Grace Hanson No problem (Late reply eh? I blame Google+ for not telling me you replied) I'm just blurting out ideas that could be the answer. We could just be looking too deepy into this but if it did have a meaning then...well, who knows what it could mean! There's so many different ways to interpret the one line that it's hard to draw an assumption, it's like Chocolate Rain in its own way, nobody knew what it meant and people still don't (but apparently it was just the idea of raising questions which is quite smart but it took a whole song to get that message across whilst we're analyzing a single verse.)
PS: Where would one get the book and is it costly? It sounds like one of the few things I would actually read!
+Gamesfan34260 It depends on what version of the book you get. I got an abridged version for about nine dollars back in May. If you go for an unabridged, it will probably cost a lot and it will be hard to get through (I kid you not, there's at least 13 chapters at the beginning just dedicated to the Bishop. Not that he isn't great; it's just a little intimidating).
Also, what's the purpose of poetry if we're not over-analyzing it? I feel like this book/musical is the reason I'll pass English this year.
Joey, ths is coming 4 years too late, but your observations are perceptive and beautiful. I certainly agree that Javert has deadened his internal moral compass almost entirely, subordinating it to externally enforced laws and accepting them as absolute, to the point that his own morality has become weak and uncertain by lack of use, like the shrinking appendix.
Everyone thinks actor have to be super good at singing but I think sometimes actors over dramatize singing , like marius. People didn't think russel crowe was good for this part but I thought he was amazing... he isn't the best singer but his emotion was perfect
when i was younger, i hated javert. but now, i pity him in a way.
"I'm reaching but I fall, and the stars are black and cold. As I stare into the void, of a world that can not hold" God, those lines crush my heart. So powerful. I love Russel
he was just so menacing as Javert in a way that Russell just brings to the screen in every role
Les Mis the movie is just that, a diferent medium than the stage. Russell Crowe brings a new demention to the chacter of Javert. He does an amazing job! I too cried
I love how you can hear the confusion in Javert’s voice as he questions everything he has believed for his entire life. I’m sad it ends with him dying but it makes sense because sometimes a person just can’t comprehend the truth and go mad just by thinking about it. Kinda like how people couldn’t comprehend the monsters in Birdbox (Yeah, remember that? No? Don’t blame ya) and kill themselves as a result to escape the madness. This is a pretty similar scenario but more realistic/believable. -Also yes I love Russell Crowe’s Javert, stop giving him so much hate. He did a wonderful job and is a beautiful singer-
Finally a version without that crush sound as he falls.
My favorite part of the movie, Les Mis was a fantastic movie, but Crowe's performance was probably my favorite element. I love how he represses his emotion until this scene where it all comes pouring out. Horribly underrated.
I think that him being in strict times shows how he's trying hard to keep it together, but in reality he's falling apart. In the movie when he sings "There is nothing on Earth that we share!" he looks and sounds so broken and almost near tears. On "Shall his sins be forgiven?" he looks so lost and confused. Same goes for the last two lines, and when he falls, he just falls forward. He doesn't make a big show of it. He's just like 'Goodbye cruel world!' and falls with a nice, satisfying crack
Who is this man?
What sort of devil is he
To have me caught in a trap
And choose to let me go free?
It was his hour at last
To put a seal on my fate
Wipe out the past
And wash me clean off the slate!
All it would take
Was a flick of his knife.
Vengeance was his
And he gave me back my life!
Damned if I'll live in the debt of a thief!
Damned if I'll yield at the end of the chase.
I am the law and the law is not mocked
I'll spit his pity right back in his face
There is nothing on earth that we share
It is either Valjean or Javert!
And my thoughts fly apart
Can this man be believed?
Shall his sins be forgiven?
Shall his crimes be reprieved?
And must I now begin to doubt,
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is stone and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow.
Is he from heaven or from hell?
And does he know
That granting me my life today
This man has killed me even so?
I am reaching, but I fall
And the stars are black and cold
As I stare into the void
Of a world that cannot hold
I'll escape now from that world
From the world of Jean Valjean.
There is nowhere I can turn
There is no way to go on!
I love his singing.
I actually mostly cried when he put his badge on Gavroche. I was bawling. I didn't want him to die after that. I normally don't mind, but after that I was like...NOOOO. HE IS TOO NICE! And then I sobbed more...
my God, why Russell Crowe wasn't nominated and won the academy award?
***** In this case, I agree. Hugh's voice was really weak.
***** How in the world can you say that Javert is a simple character???
Right, but he's viewed as the antagonist of the show. He really isn't. He's just a complex character because in any other setting, where Valjean is not the hero, Javert would be the real hero.
Still a better love story than Twilight! ^_^
The Seine and Javert?
Agnieszka Chorabik Javert and his one-sided love for Valjean.
ulol
When I was watching this movie I felt I could actually get emotionally invested in this scene
Then a cartoon sound effect killed the mood
i love his voice. i got Stars and this one on replay!!
I loved his voice, I listen to the tracks he's on all the time :) He's my favorite Javert
There are lots of people that don't like Russell Crowe in this film. Yes he might not have the best voice compared to other People who have played Javert but I thought he played the character really well. In fact I quite like it. In some ways his singing makes it seem more emotional and add that to the acting he showed his character off really well and that is sometimes forgotten over the person's voice. You hear the words more and in this song you can hear his pain and misery. Sometimes that is more important then the voice. You can have the voice but if you don't have the character spot on to me that makes a difference. They tend to swap characters around some are very good at some characters but not as good with others. There is usually one that they are best at. It's rare in my opinion for them to be brilliant at 2 characters unless they are from different musicals.
hes so talented!!!
I love his voice ♥
I love this version. I had no idea Crowe had a real voice, This and Stars, are awesome. (So are the other songs.) And this upload is even better than my original CD! Crowe redeemed himself from all his other silliness with this. Awesome. THANKS!
I had just watch Reichenbach when I first watched Les Mis. Javert was my favorite character just like Sherlock. The both jumped off of a very high structure and broken a lot of bones in there body. You do not understand my pain.
I read your entire response (which is perfect) in Bravo's voice. Thank you for making my day.~
everytime i watch the movie, is this the only part i cry in the whole movie because he is my fav character
" *Look* *down* Javert"
"And the *stars* are black, and cold"
I've watched this part so many times
Don't you worry. This scene tugged at my heartstrings too. I was growing to like Javert throughout the movie, and just when he sees the light, he commits suicide. I didn't cry, but I was plenty shocked and sad
I agree! He was one of my favorite, I loved all of his parts.
My eyes were filled with tears before that scene, after I saw it.. I just couldn't stop crying, it was soooo emotional. And Gavroche is one of my favorite characters
OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS MAN
i love both versions, except Russel Crowe has a very strong opening.
You could of done one with less lyrics. But, glad to hear you did this one. Awesomeness. :)
I find it really annoying that some people hate russel crowe's voice because of Nostalgia Critic. This voice was perfect for the role.
Thank You. Couldn't have said it better myself.
Damn, Russell Crowe can sing
Funniest comment I've read in a while.
You must have your volume at 0
Javert is my favorite character and I love this scene/song because it perfectly goes the song at the beginning when Jean Valjean does his song at the church, both men at those points choose death. Jean Valjean's is a metaphoric death so that he can start a new life and Javert's is unfortunately a literal one.
Russell Crowe has an AMAZING voice :)
Rusell was perfect for this role. And his voice is amazing.
Let's just say....I like Javert....Russel did a good job....
Thanks very much for posting this, my one problem with the movie is that they put that cartoonish sound effect in when he hit the stone and basically ruined what was a great performance - without that sound the song and drama is just right! Thanks again :)
I really like his song, you can hear his feeling...
I love this video
^.^
Love how Stars works its way back in as Javert falls, he’s rejecting redemption and clinging to his destroyed values, and the return of his song at the end affirms that he will not change, and cannot go on
Australians seem to nail these jobs. Good job Crowe, you obviously dont need to do opera to get the job done.
I think Valjean wanted him to start a new life. One where he could understand others, why they do wrong acts to the law, for the good of others. I don't think he ever intended for him to do suicide. He was not that type of man.
Ah Russell Crowe looked, acted and sung perfectly for Javert! I love it whenever he popped up on screen with his strong authoritative voice rwwr~~ XD Brilliant job!
Ah! But all the actors were AMAZING! I cried from so many emotions all the way through! MASTERPIECE!
Love his voice. Raw, great and simply soulful.
I love Russel Crowe's version. Something I have learned when watching these remakes and what not, you can not compare them to anything else you have seen or heard before because it will not be the same and you will find the differences as faults. You must take everything new and as it is without comparing it to something else. This applies to anything, not just this.
I think that the reason why Russel Crowe was cast for this part was because of his imposing stature, but gentle, peaceful figure. They didn't try to depict Javert as a mere despicable man. Javert is a man always in conflict with himself, not only after Valjean sets him free. That is only the moment that puts an end to everything. Javert is a man of the law because he is trying to raise good to perfection, and is totally lost when he finds out that good and bad are not always dictated by the law.
Best character
That "reprieved" and that "on" are just so.... Mmm
i watched les mis and i was into it. i love most of the songs. i remember that i went to london with my family and i saw people dressed up in old clothes and i found out like a few weeks later that it was them shooting les mis. :D i will never forget that !
Quast is incredible, I could listen to him all day :D
My favorite part is from 1:55 and onward.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE! His beautiful voice and brilliant acting stole the whole show
love this song and the scene in the movie ♥
Russell Crowe is so handsome ^^)
Powerful scene. Great movie.
wow amazing
What I always wondered was why didn't Javert just escort Valjean and marius to a hospital, let valjean leave marius there, then arrest Valjean on the spot....
Cause Marius is his enemy.
I concur with this statement! He was my favourite!
ABSOLUTELY AGREE! His beautiful voice and brilliant acting stole the show! :)
my fav part is "there is nothing on earth that we share!...its is either Valjean or Javert!" even though i think of it in two ways, i still love that line.... great job russell! love this song even though its sad. but then again most of the songs in this movie are sad.
i loved the orchestrations on Javerts songs in this movie
I really loved his voice and singing parts D: I honestly don't know why everyone dislikes it so much :'3 His acting was also great. He did a great job as Javert.
I think that Russell Crowe was the best actor in the whole movie singing & acting if people think that casting was terrible I think the worst was Eddie Redmayne as Marius after watching the 25th Anniversary of Miss Saigon on numerous occasions now makes me think that Alistair Brammer would've fit the role perfectly.
What he can’t even sing😂😂
It really surprises me when they hire people who aren't professional singers or haven't sung in a musical and yet they are brilliant singers and really should be on stage in the musical
This was one of the most emotional scenes of the entire film. I knew what was coming, and i still worried about it. I still hoped that he would stay. I still hoped he wouldn't go through with it...but he wouldn't be Javert, if he didn't do it.
he sounds like guy muttering to himself while having a breakdown. this will always ring more true to me than the way it was done in the stage performance, regardless of how amazing the other guy's voice is.
"French Dredd isn't real, he can't hurt you?"
French Dredd : "Je suis le law"
its just that he comes form a different kind of musical talent that was different form the others and I thought it was really good.
God...the character development of Javert was one of the best I have ever seen anywhere...Les Miserables is an awesome opera -and- movie
From I've heard, I think Russel Crowe's weaknesses are what gives his songs a raw sound, which is what I think the director was aiming for.
I noticed that this song and valjeans bishop song have alot in common. Valjean mentions staring into the whirlpool of his hate, and mentions a dark void, Javert is literally looking into a dark whirlpool while contemplating his death. Valjean and javert were both given a second chance by a person who couldve pretty much ended them. And both say theyll escape from the world of Jean Valjean and do so in two drastically different ways.
I love this song
Yes, thats my favorite line of the song
When Javert jumps off the bridge at the end, he hits a divider in the water and you hear his body basically crack in half.
First foreshadow: It's either valjean or javert
"I will escape now from that world"
from the world of jean valjean
No, the first shadow is "and if you fall like Lucifer fell you fall in flames" in Stars. Note that it *falls*
Gotta love the line "There is nothing on Eath that we share, it is either Valjean or Javert"
