Converting Bi-fold Doors to Double/French Doors

  • Changing my bi-fold to double/french doors.
    I wanted better access to my pantry, so I converted the existing bi-fold doors into double doors or french doors. It was a fairly simple build: remove the center hinges connecting the two doors in the center. Add new door hinges to the outside, new knobs and a magnetic catch to keep them closed. Fill the old knob hole with wood filler, sand and paint.

    Nice video. I did the same thing with my laundry doors and a couple closets. Note for anyone wanting to try this: you end up with a wider gap at the bottom than you have on a typical door. Also, you can add strips of wood around the inside of the closure to create a door jamb. This helps to give your door something more to bump up against than just the magnet and can help minimize the "this used to be a sliding door" look. I think I used 1/2" (or 3/8") x 2" strips of wood.

    This is beautiful. One thing I will probably add to mine is a thin strip of one by at the top. The magnetic latch is good, but you want a little more support in case someone leans into them by mistake

    Been looking for something like this fo a while. We have French doors on our pantry that are individually 15x80 that we used to mark my kids’ heights with over the years. We are selling the house so they’re coming with us and the buyer wants the same doors. Can’t find the French doors in that size. Going to go to Lowe’s ASAP and get the bifold and just convert.

      I would like to do it too (girl by myself). But I don't know if the hinges will fit. Doesn't it have to be done like a regular door - where there needs to be an indentation for the hinges? I have molding around the border of the closet. Would love to do it myself. The doors are very heavy.

    • @teastep4720
      @teastep4720 5 лет назад +4

      Tea Step Thank you! My doors are a very tight fit so I’m not sure there is the tiniest room for hinges unless I shave the door. I will look into it! Thank you!

    I've been wanting to do this too. I am noticing, it doesn't look like your hitting solid wood when you are drilling in the drywall as the drill suddenly lunges in to the hole, indicating it isn't hitting a stud. Just make sure you hit wood when you all do it yourselves. Also I noticed that I would probably have to flip both doors inside out so that the hinge holes that were between the doors are against the wall side now with the new hinges. I guess you could fill them with putty and paint though. I like that music too! Just trying to be helpful. Thanks!

    • @happymanadam
      @happymanadam 3 года назад +1

      Wood Fillter/Paint is the way to go - If you flip the doors I think it looks awkward with the big space in the center.

    For me it gives an idea of what can be done and how. I am sure with some common sense you can ask someone at Home Depot for additional information. Stop being mean some of you and say thanks because you didn’t know how to do it or that it could be done.if you knew then keep moving the video is not for you. If you got better then make your own RUclips that we can view and get something from you. Some of you smh 🤦‍♀️ .

    I have one question. What did you drill the hung hinges to? It looked like there was nothing behind that drywall when you were predrilling those holes.

    • @Suavissimo
      @Suavissimo 2 года назад +2

      Guess we'll never know… I suspect his doors fell off shortly after he posted the video. Maybe it was more practical to put them back on as bifolds than to add a frame around the doorway so he could properly mount them on wood. 🤷‍♂️

    My opening is 24 inches but the bifold doors are 11 and 3/4 each. I am thinking there will be a space that needs to be filled.

    • @timhood2690
      @timhood2690 4 года назад +2

      You could cut a thin 1 or 2 inch door length strip of wood and over lap one door and glue to the other door so when you closed it looks like the doors are fully closed. Similar to how some fridge doors have that 2nd internal lip that allows for a more tight close. Only downside is you will always have to close one of the doors before the other to close them.
