You won't be disappointed. I absolutely hate that I sold this lens some years back. It is the absolute best in terms of resolution and contrast for long telephoto length lenses, (or any lens really). Even Canon's newest RF 600, 800, and 1200 mm lenses do not compare. Just look at the MTF chart differences between the two. The 500mm mkii kills everybody else, even with extenders on. I took plenty of exceptional images even with the 2x on. I have the 100-500 now, but hate the high f-stop. Doesn't bode well for extenders if needed. Yes it is sharp, but not quite as sharp as the older EF 500mm mkii. Interestingly, even the 600mm mkii isn't as sharp and CA free. This lens remains CA free even when you put a 2x extender on it AND put it on a crop body. Not sure what sorcery they did to achieve this, but it's amazing.
@@benjaminmesa1089 so happy to hear that! I purchased the 1.4x tc and was wondering if I should get the 2x also so you just made up my mind, I’ll be ordering that one as well!
Great honest review and totally agree with your recommendation, I do feel your score on the value of this lens was way off, considering it’s still sells new for just shy of £10,000 getting this lens for less than half that price in excellent condition should score at least a 9 😎
The reason I scored it lower on price is because it is still a very expensive lens, although it is far cheaper than the alternative Canon prime lenses, the sigma 500mm is still far better value for money, although I haven't reviewed that lens and I don't know how good it is it is significantly cheaper than this Canon 500mm. But if you were just looking at the camera lenses, you're right it should definitely deserve a 9/10!
Such a high quality content, I hope you get all audience/exposure that you deserve.
Excellent review thanks for sharing your knowledge
One of my favorite Canon EF lenses. I really hope Canon releases a native RF mount 500 mm f4 (prime or zoom) in 2025.
I just traded some gear for a used one in like new condition. I’m excited!!

anti flicker mode that you have one will also slow the down the auto focus. Not sure why you would use that with a 500mm lens.
Please do a comparison between the 100-500mm and this lens 🙏
Loved the video! What about the 500mm f/4L is USM? (first version)
Slightly less sharp at F4. I've had every generation of this lens, all the way back to the nFD manual focus one....
This lens is as close to perfect optically as you can get.....
