Ever wonder why we're here?
It’s one of life’s greatest mysteries isn’t it?
I heard it was due to teleportation:
1) Pelicans flying in have to coordinate with air traffic controllers. Any infected humans would not be able to coordinate, and something would have been clearly wrong, and permission to land denied.
2) Flood spores would take time to reproduce, and a properly-designed spaceship would be like a submarine- it can seal off areas to prevent the entire vessel from being destroyed. The spores would have to either bide their time to reach critical mass, or get extremely lucky and infect the bridge controls team.
3) The humans on the ground had already made contact with the flood, and their radio chatter wasn't scrambled. So the humans on board would have been watching out for flood-infected vessels
4) Low orbit is several miles above he ground. At that altitude, the air is too thin for humans to breathe, so the vents would be closed to avoid de-pressurization. It would take some while for anything that wasn't in a flying machine to float/fly up, and we already discussed how the infected pelicans would stand out to the flight controllers
5) The Gravemind teleported both the Chief and Arbiter

I'm actually suprised you missed something in this. In the lore after the UNSC beat the Covenant on the Ark there was a new rule set in place to avoid this type of situation in the future. The rule was and i quote...

No, it was a set of rules:
1) don't park your Frigate directly above the Library or any other flood infected facility
2) don't hesitate to remove reclaimers about to be forced to activate life ending Forerunner weapons
3) give your troopers an actual rally point

Totally agree. But I will say that the addition of Spartan 4s kinda diluted everything. The 2s and 3s were trained from kids and were pretty much one of kind. The 4s are like "anyone can be a Spartan."

Spore theory valid, gravemind teleport theory valid, infested pelican theory valid. I'm partial to the pelican one myself. Keyes and crew were operating on Halo 1 intel, so could not know the effect a gravemind would have on the rest of the flood; keeping aircraft and In Amber Clad out of jumping distance was probably considered sufficient. Staying close minimizes travel time and maximizes firepower against the infestation, not to mention reduces the chance of being spotted and swatted by the covy fleet (before it got busy tearing itself appart in civil war). If a bird gets shot down, oh well write it off, not like they can fix it. Oh look, that one survived after all...

@@fredrick1043 CE magnums are more effective at mid to long range, CE Shotguns instantly fuck them up at close range in 1 to 2 shots with a 12 round mag and 60 rounds instead of 6 and 30 of later games *(god I miss the Halo CE Shotgun)*

I had always assumed that it was infected due to the Gravemind’s ability to teleport. If it had the ability to teleport the Master Chief onto High Charity, then the Gravemind had the ability to teleport infected soldiers onto In Amber Clad.
Wow such a good theory
But gravemind specifically sent them to locations known by the profit of Regret and penitent tangent, his other captives in the cutscene. Perhaps he needs specific knowledge of some sort.
Though neither of our theories address why gravemind needed the In Amber Clad to infect high charity then.

@@alphabet2238 this would make waaay more sense, maybe even too much sense. one of the known flood containment protocols is setting teleporters into a local loop configuration, so we can assume that the flood is teleportable by forerunner tech and that teleporting someone who is infected does not screen the flood out as a cure. it would make even more sense if they just didn't allow flood teleportation at all, or if they had the scanning resolution to be able to pick out what's infected and what's not.
@@shadowblood95 It may be that the teleportation capacity is limited, we only see the Gravemind teleport two individuals to two separate spots, so in order to infiltrate High Charity with as large of an initial force as possible, an entire ship might have been a better insertion method.

Third Theory: A pelican landed to drop off troops or supplies in the infected zone. Then a Infected Form or two crawled up too and attached to the bottom side of the pelican without anyone seeing it. The pelican then returned to the ship and the madness started.
But that’s my opinion of what could have happened.

The Flood sent direct flood forms to the In Amber clad via the Halo rings teleportation grid. After all, when High Charity was compromised, at a certain part in the mission you begin to see HUGE tentacles form out of practically no where, giving the idea that the Gravemind teleported parts of his body to High Charity it-self when the infection started.
@@Nighterlev Except no flood forms are seen being teleported during gameplay. Only Arbiter and Chief are teleported. It wouldn't make sense for a forerunner teleportation network to be able to teleport the flood.
@@Nighterlev Unless the arbiter shutting down the sentinel wall shield allowed gravemind to utilize the teleportation network for the flood. Gravemind may also been helped by its precursor knowledge and the fact that High Charity is made from reverse-engineered Forerunner tech.

There could be a sort of third theory where a pilot or a few marines was infected by flood spores and because of their slow infection nature went to In Amber Cald for treatment, but transformed in the medical bay or hangar which would sooner or later spread throughout the whole ship.

Yeah really, @@ItsButterBean1020. Though you would think the human medics would of quickly identified "Oh fuck! You're Infected!!" then promptly run out of the medical room then immediately have their ship's AI put the medical room on lockdown to await for the ship's few remaining guardsmen to come in and incinerate the medical room. The teleportation idea holds the most water in this. How would a few Infected Marines easily bring down the entire ship with what I described most likely being the new medical procedures involving the Flood.

Imagine how terrifying the situation must've been on the ground for those marines. The dark atmosphere, flood screeching in the distance. Only for even of your heaviest equipment to fall to the flood.
I don't think it was stupid put the in amber clad on low orbit, humans have only one ship, against a covenant cruiser is dead, against a fleet and high charity, there is nothing they can do, no camouflage, no mines, no back up, nothing. They do the only play at their disposal, go where they wouldn't, to orbit. And use that frigate to suport their men on the quarantine zone. And after recover the index evacuate faster to the ship and jump to hyperspace to human space

In Amber Clad was just a distraction, along with trying to quickly stop the prophet of Truth from leaving.
I agree with both of these, seeing as the only UNSC local presence was the In Amber Clad, they are forced to hide most of their presence, thus taking risks, subsequently causing the loss of the frigate, her crew, and the coordinates to Earth (most probable source unless otherwise detailed by canon sources). Either the pelicans or the Gravemind's access to the teleportation could easily spread the Flood to the frigate. And if it only took a day for High Charity to fall, how much easier for just one small frigate right above the quarantine zone?
@@fleetadmiralchompa Tbh the reason why High Charity seemed to fall so fast is what I speculate, the Halo teleportation grid. The Gravemind was teleporting large parts of his over-all presence over to High Charity, and in doing so he probably lost access to Halo's teleportation grid.
So when the Elites started glassing the ring from Flood infection, he couldn't exactly teleport even more Flood forms to those ships in key area's. It could've also been because the Elites ships were out of range, because they mostly did it via plasma bombardment.
High Charity on the other hand was practically right next to it..so when the sentinel wall/shields were shut down, the Gravemind went all out and tried to infect as many places as possible to get off the Halo ring.
@@Nighterlev Not to mention that the Gravemind already had in its possession a prophet (San shayuum (spl?)). All of these factors contributed to the very efficient spread of the Flood!
Besides the fact that the b/c the Flood operates on an intelligible level, thus above purely epidemiological distributions, but also b/c they're coordinated, suggests an active and concerted effort to infect all living organisms on High Charity (this is the obvious conclusion 😅). I can't even begin to imagine what it must've been like trying to escape the increasingly desperate city; something akin to Deadspace, or worse!
I like this. If Keyes wants to not die to the Covenant fleet she has 2 options, hide on the outskirts of the system, behind a moon or something like that. That doesn't really leave any option to then do really anything on the ring.
The other is go into low orbit so close to halo the Covenant would not risk bombardment for damaging the ring. They could try to stop her by boarding but it's harder. To minimise this risk you want to be there as short a time as possible, so being very close to her mission of the index gives her the maximum chance to get the index and run before the Covenant can stop her.
Regarding the flood she may not have known the extent of the outbreak (she 100% could not anticipate infected pelicans) until she was already committed, after all the flood were way more contained on the first halo so why expect anything different. If she did know the risk then the library being an active combat and flood infected zone makes the Covenant putting a big fleet nearby way too risky for them.
Over the Library is the only place she can get any real safety form the Covenant and she isn't going to expect the flood infection to be as bad as it was. It's a gamble but it's basically her only option if she wants to do anything.

Now that I think about it, Miranda's capture by the covenant actually saved her life! If she hadn't had that confrontation she would have boarded the ship only to find the crew was completely infected, neither she or Johnson would have stood a chance, regardless of Johnson's slight immunity to the flood.
I believe that because of the grave mind and the fact that they had infected UNSC that the pelican theory is the best

Actually, all pelicans in the level quarantine zone are piloted by humans and you can kill the scorpion marine being carried by one near the beginning of the mission.

Her one-liner at the beginning of Halo 3 drives me ballistic. For those who might not remember, a marine at a comm station requests a rally point for the troops, asking where he should send them. Keyes just says, "To war."
I know it's just to look cool to the player, but I'd have much preferred if she gave some sort of contingency order or something. Like, c'mon, it's ridiculous
@Melissa Waterman Tbf, both her amd Johnson got that short end of the stick, with him getting captured and then killed by Guilty Spark. In the end, they served as "friendly NCO and Officer" for MC in Halo 2 and 3.

Unless a planetary body is without an atmosphere, low orbit refers to any roughly circular orbit outside the atmosphere. For something like the Earth, that would be anywhere from roughly 100km to 2000km above the surface.

Now that I think about it. Captain Miranda Keys single handedly took down the galaxy's largest non Forerunner structure: High Charity. By mistake, lol. I mean I know it was the Flood but they couldn't have down it without her. :)
my theory has always been a pelican, since the amber clad was so low, not really the spores, I believe the spores usually affect unsc or covenant will weak immune systems, basically through the fact many instances of flood vs covenant and human vs flood, there wee many instances were both groups were exposed to heavy amounts of spores yet they didn't turn but when the spores reach there ships non-combat personnel did, The evidence I place my theory with comes with the many survivors of all the outbreaks in game and some books, john, sgt Johnsen, many marines, arbiter, and surviving covenant that retreated away from high charity during its infection

The fact that so many marines were down on the ring, as evidence by the number of human combat forms, is a great clue as to how it was so easily captured. A frigate wouldn't have a huge complement of marines to begin with, and losing so many before the flood even breech the ship, however they do it, would be an instant death.
I really doubt spores had anything to do with this. Keys had Cortana access all the intel Chief had gathered on 04 and I would hope that included intel on the flood (if not, no reason for Cortana or Chief to not warn them). If the UNSC Navy operates anything like a real life Navy, standard operating procedure while in combat would have the ship set to condition Zebra (basically making the ship airtight and isolating compartments from each other to stop the spread of fire and flooding (pun intended). This would make the ship airtight and force a switch over to air recycling thus prevent spores from entering. As for the pelican theory Im sure at least 1 Marine or a flying pelican had to have radioed in saying "Hey guys they can use our shit! look out!" As a result of that the ships CIC would have been monitoring for pelicans to be squawking IFF and keeping track of downed birds in flood controlled areas and even possibly have orders to shoot down or at the least deny landing clearance to non responsive pelicans. This is all crap that a basic combative ship would have done in this situation in real life.
In order for a spore to have entered they would have had to ignore the most basic shipboard survival procedures which I highly doubt they would have being that they are a highly advanced space based Naval force that chronologically follows our basic real life time line and therefore lessons learned in naval combat.
In order for a pelican to get on board the ship would have had to 1) granted landing clearance to a non responsive pelican or at the very least maybe one that still had a working IFF signature but no comms (most likely but very stupid of the crew) or 2) have missed a commandeered pelican with all their point defenses and then said pelican crashed into and breaching the hull of the ship (highly unlikely).
My theory is that the In Amber Clad became infected from either a sheer lack of common sense and training resulting from budget cuts, or because the flood has plot armor
A pelican crashed into the In Amber Clad isn't that far fetched, it's "only" a frigate, also it was probably understaffed so either comms/tracking/weapon systems is bound to get understaffed as well. Misscommandeering in such a situation is also not unfeasible, I mean at Cairo station Harper wants to engage the Covenant Battleships head-on. xD But yeah I imagine they would be recirculating air at the very least.

The Flood sent direct flood forms to the In Amber clad via the Halo rings teleportation grid. After all, when High Charity was compromised, at a certain part in the mission you begin to see HUGE tentacles form out of practically no where (suspecting this might be the Gravemind him-self judging from the talking alone), giving the idea that the Gravemind teleported parts of his body to High Charity it-self when the infection started.
In Amber Clad was just a distraction, along with trying to quickly stop the prophet of Truth from leaving.

The Real Jeff I concur with the plot armor theory. Had a UNSC commander really paid attention to the intel, she would have stayed far away from the quarantine zone. Also I think when she mentioned the index, chief should have chimed in like, “hey going into the library is a terrible idea. Believe me I’ve been there...” in Halo 1 Cortana was very concerned with the flood. Halo 2, she forgot to mention the gravity of the parasite to her commanding officer, and so did the chief.
As someone pointed out elsewhere. The Gravemind had access to the telepot system (It teleports the chief and Arbiter later). All it had to do was infect one person that knew the location and layout of the ship.
Then teleport an overwhelming force aboard. Job done. And naff all that Keyes or anyone else did could have stopped it

I always had the theory that the frigate entering low orbit happened after a Medi-Vac of one of the ground teams (we see plenty of infected marines and dead marines down there) who had flood spores, turned then parked it in low orbit to make infection easier | and that partially infected spore marines started calling down pelican supplies and support to rapidly drain the defensive capability right before they began sieging the ship

How long do you have to be exposed to a room full of Flood Spores to be compromised? Arbiter was walking around in the complex with no mask or helmet for an hour or so, and was not infected. Surely it wasn't his armor's energy shields which protected him?
Arbiters energy shield may actually be what protected him from the spores.
Arbiter had a much older shield than the rest of the covenant it could be that.
I do not believe energy shields would be sufficient, you would need your own atmosphere. Must be proof those areas weren't filled with spores

I'd just like to bring up how incompetent miranda Keyes was, she was not a good commander in fact far from it I'm guessing it's because she wasn't able to get the leadership training she needed and since the unsc were dealing with a missing gap in their fleet (aka Jacob keyes) they needed to fill in that rank and why not do it with his very own daughter who happens to be in the military herself, she left the amber clad completely defenseless considering she needed to use every available combat unit to secure the index which could turn the tide in humanity's favor, but she was a poor leader because of this I'm glad she died off due to her negligence, good riddance
Buuuuuut, I will say in halo 3, the story at least tried to make up for her poor leadership but all those amber clad deaths will forever be in Vien due to her actions, the sad part was she tried to redeem herself in halo 3 mostly by trying to rescue Johnson in the mission covenant but died in the process by a psycho perverted goat alien, she deserved a little bit more of a hero's death

ok what else could she have done in that situation, you have several Fleets of Covenant ships above the halo ring, plus the closer the ship is to your troops the faster it is for them to get supplies. Another thing how do we know it was defenseless, we never went into the ship during the library level so how do we know if the ship was attacked i mean we are talking about a near endless tide of space zombies numbers can overwhelm even the best of defenses, and plus she was a Navy Captain, she is trained for a completely different kind of warfare compared to marines, you don't send a Navy Admiral to do an Army General's job
