Umpteen times I listen to the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, the inner urge in my heart to listen to this increases umpteenth time ! Still, the inner urge in my heart to listen to listen to him remains insatiable ! The great Khan Saab had an uncanny ability to render the tragic and romantic nuances of the Urdu couplets with equal proficiency and consummate ease ! The agonies and ecstasies of life got fully reflected in his renditions, owing to his mellifluous voice and inimitable style of gayiki ! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab had given ghazal gayiki a pedestal, which will be very difficult to surpass ! Thankful to Mois Saab for having provided this opportunity ! During his illustrious career spanning over almost six decades, as a singer of exceptional merit, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had mastered almost all 38+ ragas of the Hindustani Music ! The great Khan Saab had made even the most difficult of the ragas - like Raag Darbari and Raag Sahera - for instance - among others - look pretty simple - though their deft handling and appropriate application in his divine creations ! Perhaps, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the finest improvisation artist in the World Of Ghazal Gayiki ! What is even more important was the fact that the great Khan Saab could maintain the pristine purity of ragas, while having absolute control over lafz, sur, taal, and loy ! Such a resourceful singer will ever tread this path again in the world ! How right was Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab in his assessment in saying - "No one can wear comete with Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over sur is concerned !"
Nusrat sahaab (a phenomenon in himself) have listened more number of hours than he sang and came to conclusion that there is no better surili voice in this universe than Mehdi Hassan. Not only NFAK, but also legendary Ustad Salamat Ali Khan treated Mehdi sahaab in high esteem when he sang raag Darbari in a private mehfil. Ustad Salamat Ali stood up and reached the stage to greet him with the message that “today I came to know you are also a gavaiyah(skilled classical singer)”. It is said that Salamat Ali Khan did not sing raag darbari for over 6 months after that event. It’s pretty much impossible to compose a ghazal or any song in Darbari without occasionally using notes outside the allowed ones, but only Mehdi sahaab could do it. I am a fan of rhythm than lyrics, so I enjoy listening to the master of rhythm and classical, i.e. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But Mehdi Hassan’s melodious voice, his raag daari, hitting of notes in kharaj, the aura that he creates when he sings, has captivated me. The same raag bhimpalasi I have heard in the form of rhythm from NFAK in his qawalis, the melodious rendering ‘zindagi mai to sabhi pyar kiya karte hain’ in the form of ghazal by Mehdi Hassan is in a different dimension altogether. Mehdi Hassan has forced me to be captivated by lyrics in addition to rhythm.
I am also well conversant with the style of gayiki of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab ! He was a phenomenal singer and infact, he himself was a phenomenon ! What's even more worthwhile and meaningful is the fact that the accolade for the great Mehdi Hassan Saab and his singing attributes had come from none other than Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab, himelf ! Sur(Notation) and Taal(Rhythm) are also the essence of the art of ghazal gayiki ! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab had excelled in keeping the right balance between the two, while maintaining the pristine purity of ragas, in his renditions ! The Height of Excellence, which the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had scaled during his illustrious career spanning over almost six decades, as a singer of exceptional merit, is not possible for a normal human being, unless one is not otherwise very highly endowed ! Perhaps, that realization might have led the great Latajee to say - "GOD resides in the voice of Mehdi Hassan Saab !" In any case, 'a living legend' could only realise the worth and greatness of a 'legend in his lifetime !' It goes without saying that everyone is unique, in one's own right, in one's own individual way, in the respective field of expertise ! Needlless to say that admiring one, doesn't necessarily mean showing disrespect to others !
