I have been listening to the recorded work of this man since I was in university in the 1970's. His singing goes far, far beyond skillfulness or talent alone -- Fritz Wunderlich is the lost poet of the operatic world. No one I have ever heard does what he did. I feel that he touched us with a glimpse of anguished, yet heavenly grace in this magnificently written (THANK YOU, Tchaikovsky!!!) aria -- a few blessed moments of transcendence that words truly cannot describe...
Bravo ! Vous avez bien exprimé la perte irréparable que l'on éprouve en entendant avec une grande émotion l'incomparable et élégante beauté de la voix de Fritz Wunderlich.
i have to say that 5:16-5:40 is some of the most beautiful music making i have ever heard. +1 tchaikovsky +2 for Wunderlich. it's a shame he had to leave this world just as his career started to unfold. =(
So gorgeously interpreted, and so much to learn from and enjoy about... but the Russian adds an extra layer of pain and foreboding that the German just doesn't translate.
