    An astonishing amount of effort must go into this work of pedagogical genius. I am on lesson 26 and I am now reading full sentences in the Hebrew Bible! The only other Hebrew training I did was take Mark Futato's on-line course in Faithlife TV. With that minimal background I jumped into this and it all started to make sense. This is astonishing to me, and so gratifying. I love that you only speak Hebrew during the training. Thank you Beth and Abram.

    I think the presentation of beauty is one of the more difficult of your early lessons. Probably because the male and female adjectives for beauty that seem to appear in a construct state. I thought that the construct state joined two nouns. I guess we have a an adjective modifying it's proceeding noun that also functions as a noun in a construct. Initially it didn't help that - "appearance" is masculine but looks feminine because of the hey at the end of the verb to see. Also that no verbs- particularly the verb to be beautiful were harmed in the making of this video. Now it seems crystal clear but I initially watched it a number of times in a fog of miscomprehension.

      We do have one bird, Zedekiah, whom you'll meet in a future lesson :) However, back when we were filming this lesson and those around it, we didn't have any pets. We were actually in Spain in lockdown in a small apartment, and there were often birds singing outside the window, so that's why you hear so many birds in these lessons!

    Hi Beth, I know you aren't in much favor of direct translations. but a small question. Can 'hayyah' be translated as "was" and "had"?

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, היה is literally "was" (masc.) and if it occurs with a noun that has the lamed preposition with a possessive meaning then it would be "was to ___" and that would be translated "had." However __היה ל also sometimes means "became ___"

    For the bible readings, did you deliberately leave the name of the books untranslated as an extra exercise? I managed to read that this one was 2 Samuel and knew that Genesis was Beresith from seeing it in a Latin bible (Liber Genesis Hebraice Beresith) Others may not be so fortunate.

    Then in Hebrew they say Iššā yefāt mar'e, not Eššet yafe mar'e, as I would expect. Also, the adjectives agree with the subject in this ''partitve'' construct, Idk how should I call it. 🤔

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  2 года назад +2

      Right, because yafeh/yafah is an adjective, not a noun, we can't have the noun 'ishah in construct form because it's not followed by a noun. However, interestingly the adjective is in construct form! So you can think of this literally as "a woman beautiful of appearance"
