When I started playing bass this was 1 of the 1st songs me and my guitar buddy learned to play. They are independent of eachothet yet complimentary w enough room to groove extra with. So sick dude
@@theramplocal Trying to figure out which bass he's using here...the official music video has an original pbass or telecaster bass. Flatwound strings a must.
lol people are complaining about the audio quality? I can hear the bass in my headphones...it's not amazing, but I'm used to washed out VHS audio from the 90s that's often far, far worse....thanks to the uploader and whoever ripped it! always loved CAKE's energy!!
I met these guys once, back stage on a tour with De La Soul and the Flaming Lips. The singer was really nice and fun to talk with. & They kicked out the jams. Great Show!
I saw that tour! Modest Mouse also played (so did The Hackensaw Boys and Kinky, but I got there late and missed their sets). Such a great show with such a diverse lineup!
3 years later after this comment was made, as I sit here after my shift at the local Walmart, I'm here playing WWE 2K23 and watching the same video as you, and I came here to say absolutely nothing. Hope you're well, hoss.
Your GRANDmother? You're 87 now and this came out 28 years ago. Even if both generations before you had kids YOUNG your grandma would've had to have been driving at age 90+, AND like Cake at that age, in order for this to be a true story.
I've been looking at live performances on talk shows for a couple hours and Conan is hitting at like an 80%. He has almost everything I've looked up on his show.
Haha. People complaining about the audio. It’s definitely no Shinedown “Save Me” from Kimmel, but it’s not terrible. The bass is still bumping. And this is from 1996. That’s eons ago in digital quality.
The guitarist is pushing the pace and actually embodying the song (he wrote it) and John is nervous. He's trying to shake him up and it works. Thats what makes great performances
Is it weird that I think the best part of this video was the VHS tracking line at the bottom of the screen? That reminded me of the 90's more than the song.
@@JohnMatayas yeah I'm not sure what he's talking about. The bass is perfectly audible. It gets drowned out in the chorus a little when it's synced with the guitar in rhythm, but it's still there
It's cool to see them performing this song when it had just came out. Sucks that the sound guy didn't give them a proper mix, I don't know WTF happened there.
I have to think that the vocal performance here is extremely difficult because of the off-key nature of the melody. Not many road signs in there to anchor off of.(?)
It's multiple layers of compression. These are exaggerated versions of what mp3s sound like. As many are saying, this is probably a VCR tape and they're a bad start. You digitize it then convert it at some point then it goes through RUclips compression as well. This is an extremely popular show in a golden age for for the format that had live music every episode. The sound engineer was likely amazing. Really doubt we need to be complaining here, especially when we only have access to this thanks to someone else's work.
i like how it starts semi awkward but they still hype up as the song goes on. that bassest is awesome
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force
(brilliant)
I was so disappointed to learn this wasn't written by them.
The drummer is kicking some serious ass!
Love what he does at 2:18!
dude's got serious skills he's underrated for sure, lots of nuanced playing
He was the drummer for the Sex Pistols
@@Strongasmeat Paul cook was the drummer for the Sex Pistols what are you talking about
@@Strongasmeat That's Todd Roper, he was never the drummer for the Sex Pistols.
Cake could never be confused with any other band and that is a special thing.
Simple rock n roll yet so unique and timeless.
Huge hip-hop element too
Oh no. This is funk!
Not THAT simple tho, you try say “ahAh” while playing those riffs
@@Grym0626 ok

Thank fuck we live in a world where this song exists.

What a great bass player, great guitar riff and fills

Seriously. An inspiration of sorts

They all could do with a renegotiation on this mix))
That bass player (Victor Damiani) left in 1997

I saw that tour! Modest Mouse also played (so did The Hackensaw Boys and Kinky, but I got there late and missed their sets). Such a great show with such a diverse lineup!
This video made me reach for the tracking knob on my non-existent vcr
Conan always had on great music. In the mid to late 90s as a teen i learned of so much great stuff from his show
I'm a metal and hard rock fan, but this song is a jam, no doubt. These guys rocked it.
Guys. It’s a 24 year old video probably ripped from a vhs recording. It’s gonna have shit quality
appreciate the warmth 🔥

Such an incredible song. Such an incredible band. Cake is second to none.
Im 87 and ive been listening to this song since my grandmother first played it to me on the car radio (56 buick)

This song always gets me fired up
no one talking about the guitar? that guy gives all the juice to the song 🤌
It makes sense, he wrote it
saw them a week ago in atlanta :) they played this song, of course. still sounds just as good. they're a really tight band, so consistent.
I still love and play this from time to time 😳27 years down the line.
Wow, that is almost half my life!
I've been looking at live performances on talk shows for a couple hours and Conan is hitting at like an 80%. He has almost everything I've looked up on his show.
I still like it.. live music on a TV show is quite different than playing in a studio.. where one can control the music via feedback. STILL AWESOME.
Saw these guys live once. Needless to say geniuses.
They will be playing in Atlanta in Sept 2024. Perhaps they will be on tour.
Cake is hands down one of the best bands of all time

I’m bet they’re amazing live
I went to see them a while back, and they’re awesome live. They gave away a whole ass tree at the concert too
I saw them live in AZ and their set was tight and groovy.

Conan with cake. I could ask for nothing more
world peace, i suppose
Best Cake song ever
The audio mixing here is definitely one of my favorites of all time. Well done
I'd do anything to get back to 1996
Bass and trumpet. Lo e Cake plus the trumpet man its great
This was almost 30 years ago. Enjoy it young ones, it goes way faster than you think.
The perfect song
Takes me back ❤
They are special. Oh my God
No lip syncing, Respect.
I love this song but he's basically just talking. Lol.
I think he means the backing vocals cause they killed it
love those guitar riffs
Victor Damiani & Guild Bass !
oh yeah, love Cake!!
wow they were so cool
No other band quite like them
2024 sound super fresh run every morning with them
I love how he was awkward at first but the more he got into it, the less he became

Even old, seasoned bands get the jitters sometimes. It's cool how it can still feel exciting even when you do it every night.
The guitarist is pushing the pace and actually embodying the song (he wrote it) and John is nervous. He's trying to shake him up and it works. Thats what makes great performances
Anyone else prefer this to the studio version?
The guitar is more forward in this mix and I like it.
Love ‘em .
Find me another band that sounds like cake. I love cake so much

I hear it pretty well. It's lost a tiny bit behind the other instruments when they ramp up, but it's definitely there.
A perfect song.

Just almost like the original, incredible
Excellent
