Toyota s focus on quality is because of an American Charles Edwards demming. Who taught Toyota the art of quality control after the war. He was a US statistician that was an auditor and tried to educate the US chamber of commerce but they did not listen. So he went to Japan and the rest is history

I've heard that Toyota sent engineers to American junk yards in the 80s to study why their vehicles broke down. The knowledge gained from that experience allowed them to over build parts that encounter most wear and tear. Just impressed with that kind of interest and passion on building quality vehicles. Think this was mentioned on Top Gear years ago.

I noticed that when I used to live in Centroamérica, some Toyota over there are similar to the ones from USA (Corolla , Camry, Yaris) but different at the same time, thats when i noticed they built their cars according to the region. On the contrary american brands mostly built for the USA and export those vehicles overseas, they usually fall apart within a couple of years. BTW i read on a blog long time ago, H Ford used to send engineers to Yunk yards and check what parts of their cars were still strong and hadn't wear out so they can lower the quality of them on the next built..

The only obstacle is that he know no English and has to have a translator with him all the time. Unfortunately, some of the management come in and try to kick it out. Toyota: "Don't accept inferior quality from the previous process, don't make rejects in one's product, and if a reject has been produced, don't knowingly send it to the next process." This is quite different from the American style, the bosses only care about hitting the production numbers (their bonuses and evaluations depend on it). That's what we have final assembly QA and repair for. If they are too busy, just ship it to the customer. That's what warranties are for.

Scotty, The Woven City reminds me of a time when I had my young daughter with me at my workplace. My work was to create the physical layout plans for computer chips. On these chips, we have to put the company name to establish copyright for our product. I worked for Dallas Semiconductor. I had a 40" wide multi-color plot of a completed chip layout on a table. My young daughter looked at that, seeing the multicolor patterns of transistors, resistors, capacitors, diodes and interconnecting wires. She pointed at the word, "Dallas" and asked, "Dad, we are here, where is our house?" She interpreted the chip as a complex city map. Smart kid. Scary smart.

I totally agree! And I grew up in Detroit and all my family works for the US car companies. Ironically I was a loyal US car buyer until I went into a Chevy dealer to purchase a Caprice Classic. The dealer showed me a Geo Prizm and a Geo Metro. I bought both for less than the price of the Caprice. The Geo Metro I put 100k miles on it before I sold it. The Geo Prizm (which I found out after I owned it for awhile was actually a Toyota Corolla) I ended up putting 250k on it before giving it to my son. He put another 100k on it and gave it to a friend. Ever since then I’ve bought nothing but Toyotas and have never had a problem with them. Toyota Etios was a legend in india, we owned one that had around 300k kilometres on it and still worked good as new, was a really comfortable and cheap car and probably the best in its Competition

Toyota really is an incredible car company. Their competetiveness in everything they do is remarkable and unmatched. Good example of that is how they make mostly just cheap cars of excellent reliability but when Toyota puts it's hard effort in making a sports car or competing in racing they can make some of the best and legendary cars i these categories too.

I’m in one of those countries that gets the Toyota Prado, Hulux and fortuner , these things cost an arm and a leg brand new. A mid range prado is about 80k usd. While the big land cruiser is about 150k usd after fees and dealership price hikes

However, the 2azfe engine is known for oil leaks in the serpentine belt area which are hard to pinpoint and hard to fix. The leaks can saturate the serpentine belt with oil. Otherwise the Camry is a good car.

I remember what my favorite singer says...”my father has always taught me...you have to learn how to respect the public because they are the most important thing” that was when he started singing at 12, he’s now 51 and after 100 million sold albums later (without transitioning to English market like Shakira and R Martin) he still singing and selling out concerts. He’s never involved in cheap gossip nor he talks about politics. The best voice ever in Latin America. One of his nicknames is México’s Frank Sinatra.
Anyways, my point is, Toyota has learned that by prioritizing its clients and employees needs and wants, they can get very far. Something the US lost many decades ago when it made Wall Street its priority. It’s really sad to go anywhere and see a parking lots or gas stations dominated by foreign brands especially Asian in a country as big, powerful and with lots of historic car brands as the USA.
When you do things right, everything else will magically work well too.

I used to live in my country 16 yrs ago and in those days i remember seen large diesel CDL Heavy Toyota trucks for utilities and Cargo, they were noisy but they were also from early 70s still running in the early 2000s.. that's how you how crazy they are for quality

Ironically the guy that sold me my two Tundras worked at Ford. Praised the Toyotas and told me how he was sick of dealing with f-150 transmission issues. He felt that all the bragging about capability lead to people going right to the limits of the truck to their dismay.
