This was super great information!! I almost cut those babies back today and because of your video and the fact we’re having temperature’s in the 20 all weekend I’m going to hold off.👍

I live in the Bay Area California. Our potted hydrangeas didn’t get pruned last year and bloomed. They’re now really leggy. When should I prune them and exactly how do I do that? Also the same with geraniums?

Do you guys compost? If so any tips?

Hi Ryan! 👋 We don't currently compost right now, but if you are looking to start composting, make sure to not to compost any protein, like meat, because it attracts rodents and other critters you might not want around. Also, a part sunny and part shaded location is good so it heats up, but doesn't bake too in direct sunlight. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 😉👍

@@SpokenGarden thanks! We do a bit of composting with our old greens and the leaves. Hard to do a sped up compost while in an appartment. Just curious if you had any suggestions.

Would February be a good time? I live in Michigan. After years of having hydrangeas, the last couple years I have finally been having good luck. But I couldnt remember which month I pruned them in spring. Do you think March? I've also learned they LOVE shade!

Hi Lindsay! 👋 Great questions. 😄 Pruning depends on soo much, including your coldest temps, is the hydrangea hardy in your area or do you need to protect it, and what your goal is for pruning it (the kind of cuts you end up making for that goal). Spring is good time also to prune them. We would recommend pruning them after the last threat of frost has past, to make sure that any exposed tissue from making cuts doesn't get blasted from freezing temperatures. There are some gardeners who advocate cutting your hydrangeas down to the ground to have them completely regrow, which is really stressful on them. To each their own, though. Hope that helps and thank you for watching. 😉👍

I live in Michigan and we had to 50 degree days and I went out and pruned all 28 of my panicle Hydrangeas. I will let you know the results.

This is confusing because I've always heard that you shouldn't prune hydrangeas in fall/winter/spring -- only after blooming (summer) and before Aug 1. My neighbor pruned their hydrangeas and they never bloom. I don't prune my hydrangeas (except a little in summer and removal of dead branches in spring) and mine always bloom. So I'm confused.

I have never pruned mine since 2011, and they are massive. Every time someone comes over, they ask me what I do to have them that big ( the secret is being a slacker, hahah). I was just looking if I could prune them because I need to paint my house foundation....and those massive things get in the way, hahah.

Depends on what type of hydrangea your neighbor has. The panicle hydrangeas in this video love to be pruned, they bloom on new wood.

Mine too. We inherited 3 big hydrangea bushes from the previous owner. All we got were just leaves, no flower. I desperately need some advise
