These are the best kinds of updates, imo. They flesh out existing mechanics that were interesting but underwhelming and turn them into something worth engaging with.

I feel like the dirt texture with the question mark does a way worse job at getting you to notice that a texture is missing.

I mean when these texture bugs happen in game, mostly with texture packs, it looks very awkward to have these bright purple spots poking out.
Though these bugs mostly can get fixed it makes the problem less worse I think.
I think that's kind of the point. Get it to blend in a bit more.

I guess the magenta-black one is good for troubleshooting, but the question-dirt one is better for people just playing the game.
These skins haven't been designed willy-nilly we can be certain of that and so here are my thoughts.
Base wolf - I doubt this texture was done looking at any specific grey wolf subspecies in mind
Woods Wolf (Forest) - an exaggerated brown of the brownish colour the grey wolf commonly has in europe
Ashen Wolf (Snowy Taiga) - Several grey wolf subspecies can be grey to white like this
Black wolf (Old growth Pine Taiga) - Several subspecies of the wolf are or can have a black coat black like the Alexander Archipelago wolf
Snowy Wolf (Grove) - All the white subspecies of the grey wolf, I'm just not sure why they've placed it in the Grove biome as, as far as I'm aware white coated wolves are only found in arctic and sub-arctic regions
Rusty Wolf (Sparce Jungle) - The Dhole, a canine that is native to India's Jungles and very unique in the fact that you can also find them hunting in the Indian rainforests
Spotted Wolf (Savannah) - Based off of the African Wild Dog or also called painted dog which is an endangered species
Striped Wolf (Badlands) - Striped Hyena/ Aardwolf both not actually canines as Hyena's are feliforms closer related to cats than dogs
can't wait for the advancement for taming all wolf variants
this does make me wonder what they would have done if the crab got voted in instead, or if this would've been added regardless. It's really cool that this got in presumably because of the armadillo, even as someone who voted crab
True, but this is a combat update so I would assume this would’ve been added regardless of what mob got voted for, so I honestly think the dog armor was just a bonus for the wolves
As a Crab voter, I am very happy they added so much with the Armadillo.

The new wolf textures are so fantastic! This is the type of super easy addition Mojang should implement for all the mobs. Such a simple thing as texture and skin variety enriches the experience so much and gives the mobs such unique character, just like with horses players begin to value them and grow attached to them for their unique skins. Amazing work, Mojang, please consider adding a greater variety of skins to all the mobs!

They're not dogs they are actually all based off of wild canines or in one case a hyena. I believe most of them are just based off of different variations/ subspecies of the grey wolf. The Sparce Jungle variant is inspired by the dhole, The Savannah variant is inspired by the painted dog, and the badlands variant is inspired by the striped hyena. These are all just my thoughts but I am pretty certain.
They’re wolves actually. But even if they didn’t fit some pedantic definition of a real world wolf, the new skin varieties are still a fantastic addition.@@kelimationbrew

I’ve been pretty upset with Mojang recently, but this is a welcome surprise and I hope they continue making small, but needed changes like this.

I called this! I knew that since the armadillos won that they'd be implementing different breeds. Wolf customization has been asked about for a while now.
The spotted wolf is actually based off a real wolf species; the painted wolf! Really glad they added this just for that lol
Edit: now that I think of it, a lot of these wolf skins are based off real animals. For example: the chestnut wolf (if I’m remembering the name correctly) is probably based off the red wolf. The fact that it’s rare and red wolves are endangered irl is a nice detail
The striped wolf is probably based off the striped hyena. I know it’s not a wolf but neither is the painted wolf technically. I think this because it spawns in mesas
And obviously the snowy wolf is the arctic wolf

Super kudos to Mojang for listening! ❤ Please also give wolves a new behavior state where they will roam around and guard a “home” territory designated by a player, like around a player bed, or a doggy bowl, so they’re not just sitting around frozen forever.

I think it’d be pretty cool if the baby was a mix of the two parents breeds. Of course, I don’t expect Mojang to do that, as it’s a lot of work, but it’d be cool
This is by far my favorite feature of 1.21. I always stood by my decision of voting for the armadillo but now I'm even more glad that I did which I didn't think was possible. I mean it was obvious that they would eventually add more wolf variants in the future but this still caught me by surprise
i think it'll be out before 1.21 along with the armadillo (1.20.5), if so we'll be seeing them even sooner
I voted for Armadillo, and I never regretted it since.
The rusty wolf looks almost exactly like my childhood Labrador which was also named Rusty, I can't put into words how happy that specific variant makes me
To be totally honest I'm happy to see that the armadillo feature is getting better with the wolf, but I'm so worried about the next update. It's already march, and we still haven't seen any news about combat, exploration and automation.
Something tells me they're using 1.20.5 as a smokescreen to buy themselves more time for 1.21 features, otherwise there's no reason I can think of for having a weird pre-update segment

Oh yeah not many of those yet 😨 hopefully those don't turn out bad and ruin the update in any ways.
This is like when the glowsquid won and mojang had to back up and add dye to signs for the original feature to make sense in the first place.
i dont think thats a fair comparison. its clear the dog updates are just because mojang decided to revisit wolves, not to make up for armadillos. they gave exactly what they promised and then gave us more on top! glow squids were just half baked, not even close to this
Now that we're starting to get some good features, I'm imagining something must have changed management wise in Mojang. It's possible employees are getting more freedom with what they can do with the game in recent times.
also at last minecraft live they talked about doing stuff behind the scenes that would make it easier to develop new features

@@BDsigns like 1rt pistons aren't even a thing on bedrock... they really need to fix that. I can imagine that they're planing to -at somepoint- do a redstone update 2 and they're holding off doing it till then like the combat. It's probably something they'll need to do a buuuunch of boring engine stuff for.
mob variats are always welcomed by me. i loved that for cats, now we can have that for dogs! :)

Tbh the Savanna Plateau spotted wolf, with his black muzzle, looks like a pug. Which is awesome! Even though maybe they were going for a wild dog of Africa idk. But I love all the new dog variants!

The wolf armour sparked an idea in my head, they should add the colour customisation to wool and concrete(powder).

I'm not ashamed to have voted for the crab, but I am happy to say the wolf armor is now MUCH better than I anticipated and I'm glad
As a Crab voter I am still sad about the crab not winning, but I am no longer mad about the armadillo victory. It would have been sick if they could have updated the animations along with the new textures, maybe like the wolves panting with their tongues out or just a simple new walking animation. Might be too much for Mojang to do all in one week so here’s hoping to the future!

The wolf textures look like an old mod, in a good way
Wolves or other canines based on real life: african wild dog (spotted), hyenas (striped), alexander archipelago (black), gray wolf (pale), red wolf (rusty), arctic wolf (snowy), german shepherds (chestnut), and husky (ashen).
They re dingos on Australia and they look like the rusty wolf.

It's also interesting to see that these wolves are absolutely based on real species too. The short eared dog for the jungle, the timber wolf, clearly the striped one is a hyena, the spotted one is an african wild dog, etc. They definitely put some thought into making this realistic to some extent. And as for the breeding, it seems to work the same as cats. You breed two of different coat types and the baby matches one of the two parents

I love the wolf so much, I’m glad that there’s more customization, if we can get more customization like biomes, custom Superflats, more customization to mobs, and other customization to other things, mojang would be making the perfect Minecraft game!🙂

Ok hear me out but these 9 varients could be useful for bedrock players,since you cant see exactly what biome your in like java you could use the wolf varients to see what kind of biome your in

It's super cool, mojang added this as well as dyeable wolf armor. This sort of thought-out implementation in the outcome of a mob vote is what I hope it will always be now. But I guess whether you get exactly whats in the animated mob vote videos or more has always been kinda inconsistent I feel the sniffer got one of the simplest implementations of all. But anyways, horray for dog variation! 🎉

You can dye the wolf armor, but can't dye the armadillos like shulkers or sheep. 💀

So many changes I love it, even down to the water bucket thing, I always wondered why it was so different between the versions bc you couldn’t really spam click to mlg, you kinda had to time it… on bedrock

It's interesting that you said that the original variant is going away. According to the video Wattles made on the new wolves he said that the OG wolf will still spawn in certain biomes
I’m so excited for the new wolf textures, I’ve always wanted to have a dog like that black and tan one in the game
I am starting to get worried about world sizes with how much mojang wants us to explore lately. My world is already more than 2Gb, i can't even create a backup because theres not enough space to store the world.
Now this is actually a good update, having different variants of different mobs in the world gives it a very realistic and cool vibe, I like the fact that they’re adding different variants of wolves, since wolves usually come in different colors. Would love to see a black wolf in the game and be able to tame it. They should also do different variants of pigs, cows, and other mobs too.
Now all we need left is new Pigs, Chickens, and Cows!
Maybe more mobs too.
Also duck could be a different varient of chicken.

It'd be amazing if they still implemented dog breeds, but had it so that like after x generations there's a chance for 2 bred wolves to make a dog instead of another wolf.
For some reason I'm betting there's gonna be new achievements revolving around the wolves and armor or the armadillos.
The new textures resemble mostly wild Dogs like Jackals, Dingos or African wild Dogs which is the spotted variant 😄
Fun Fact: The family of the "canidae", the "dog-like", includes wild dogs to foxes and are closely related to Wolfs.

If this is going to be a dog update, they need to add an option for dogs (and cats and parrots) to not follow you but not be stuck to the ground. I think an easy thing to do is add a pet bed (simple 2 wool on either side of a carpet) and bird cage (5 sticks in the shape of a helmet and a wooden plank at the bottom middle) that when you bring a tamed pet animal around it, they will link up to it like a villager and a bed and they'd stay within a radius around it, able to freely walk around, sit and get up, and even lay down.
That's actually a good way to implement pet beds.

I have a thought because there is less wolf variants than cat variants, maybeeeee they will do a community vote to add somebody’s dog to the game similar to jelly (RIP)
As a crab voter (still think it should’ve won) but this is a damn good implementation of the armadillo feature and if it means we have to lose the crab to get the wolf variants than it may have been worth it

No one, not even I, was expecting this feature! I thought we'd have to use mods forever if we wanted variants, but I guess not anymore! I find it cool that a lot of the biomes the wolves spawn in I most of the time never even go to, so now it gives me a reason to go there now I guess! Also, doesn't the spotted wolf look like a hyena? Surely I am not the only one? Anyways, this is really cool and there will be so many combinations of dyed wolf armor and wolf variants! My favorite have to be the Ashen, Snowy, and well, all of them! (Cats are still better tho ;)

Just like multi coloured beds, this is an awesome update and will be loved by many. But again just like the multi coloured beds, how the red bed is still the overall and “most safe” bed. The og wolf will remain the fan favourite I think :)

From what I’ve seen on Twi- I mean X, it’s a load of “just reskins” and “why did it take so long”.
I’m not scathingly negative about it, just not interested in this feature. I’ve never cared about the wolves, imo they add nothing to the game, however I’m happy for the people who are excited.

I wonder if this feature would be added if it was crab or penguin that won. I think that Mojang have different update paths per mob, eg: if penguin won they could’ve have done a stony shores/ice update.
We need new bosses that create tiered challenges like in other games. I want to explore more and do dungeon raids etc but i think raiding would be more exciting if we could collect materials to summon a boss in those locations like we can with the wither in the nether fortress and how we have to go to 2 dimensions to fight the dragon. Theres the elder guardian too but after that thats kind of it. We can do pillager raids but it feels more like an event than a boss and the wither is too destructive to want to do it all the time. I dont want to destroy my world but i still want a good and fun fight. Especially if it leads to cool loot like magical items, which i think minecraft also needs badly
I love the striped wolf most. I know it’s based off of a striped hyena, but it looks similar to my dog, Tazi Mae. Who was a pitbull with a brindle pattern.
Just hope that in future updates or to this feature especially even with the wolves and cats if i breed both of them and they're both different types of cats or wolves that it'll make a different type of wolf or cat type i think thatll be awesome ❤🎉
As much as i wish the Crab was added im loving these features so far! Wonder what we wouldve gotten with the Crab or Penguin, who knows.. Will they ever be added in the future?
