I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Our laundry room is right above the layout and one day a wash was being done, the vibration of the washing machine caused the container of detergent to fall to the floor and split open. When discovered about a half gallon of detergent had leaked out. It found a crack in the floor that allowed the soap to leak down onto the layout. I was able to rinse off the scenery and get rid of the suds, but it will still foam if I do any more rinsing. Very nice layout, Will look forward to seeing the fix.
You have the coolest layout, awesome locomotives, and awesome scenery. Great video. Sux about the damage but even if you didn't fix it your layout is still awesome.
I subscribed, I'm from BC and don't have space for a layout so I live vicariously through youtuber layouts. I love seeing one that models our area of the country.
Sorry to hear about the bad luck Grant. The downside to being in the basement. I had a close call a couple years ago where a jug of liquid tide fell off the dryer on its side, busted the nozzle off and flooded the laundry room floor. It poured into a nearby vent and then down onto one of my reverse loops. Luckily, it was still under construction at that time and wasn't fully loaded with trains. Good on you for looking at the dishwasher incident as an opportunity to improve the scene. I look forward to see what you do with it! Have a great summer. -Ben
I was almost thinking “what damage?” Until you started poking the layout. Wouldn’t have been so bad if you didn’t have the track and clearance issues. Glad you have a plan to fix. I remember reading about a modeller who had a similar situation and because he paid attention and replicated the culverts and drainage that the prototype did, when the water leak happened, all the water drained through the layout’s culverts and onto the floor and then into the floor drain. I can’t help but think he had similar damage to his scenery. Take care Grant, see ya at the next Ops, whenever that happens.
Thinking we might have to have an op session with a slow order before the track gets fixed Jon. Yah the first flood when the house still had Poly-B piping ended up landing in the lake and all the water ran under the bridges and off the edge of the layout. That seems like a lifetime ago... long before this layout was built. Cheers Pal!
Very sorry to hear about your leaking dishwasher and the damage it caused on the layout. Nevertheless, I sincerely appreciate your stance on this situation, which you take as an opportunity for improvement, rather than a setback. Aren’t familiar with many North American dishwasher models, know more about European models. Have seen a lot of damage over the years especially from built-in models and inaccessible drain hoses. Don’t know if you have access to a drain for your dishwasher in the basement? As the main issue with dishwashers often is that they’re placed as low as possible for ergonomic reasons. This almost always entails for the drain hose to be connected up to a higher point in the drain under the sink. However, when the possibility exist to connect to a lower situated connection, then the hose will be emptied after every dishwashing circle. This will significantly increase the longevity of the flexible connection. Which in most cases remains filled with the organic waste and detergents, which can truly affect the consistency of those hoses. Cheerio
Thanks for your comments Vincent. I try to treat setbacks as "do-overs". We don't necessarily learn from success but rather from failure. I appreciate your insight on the dishwasher drain hose. I hit the basement this morning after reading your comment... to plan on where to drop the drain hose through the floor and tie it into the main drain line!! Great idea that I'm sure not many think of. Cheers. -grant
Grant, Sorry to hear you had problems'. Great that you aren't distancing yourself from the problems' and heading into them with a plan. Saw you guest hosting on The Second Section Podcast. I feel as you do that there is way too much emphasis on the underbody details; most (99%) will not see them! I think if they focus (as you do and others') on the mechanism and the details that count the $ / unit will drop, thus, introducing more to well running models for the beginners in the hobby; increasing the retention factor. Take care.
Can't fix a problem unless you confront it Colin as I'm sure you well know!! I appreciate your comments on the podcast and your takeaway from it. You've hit the nail on the head. Give people a reliable product first to mitigate the frustration factor. Most of us got into the hobby during a time when detail parts were a thing and you could dress up your locomotives to your hearts desire. The key being the base model was decent quality to begin and we didn't end up with shelf queens. Cheers. -grant
To be honest, I was expecting worse visual damage. I would have considered gluing the raised edges and rescenicing the repair as a start but understand you wanting to just remove, inspect and replace. Look forward to the upcoming repairs/changes. I must say the rock face wash does look good, though!
Because of the curling I would have top re-soak the Celluclay to soften it and then it wouldn't bond. Best to tear out the affected area and start over. Shouldn't be too bad once I find some time to get at it. Cheers!
Certainly could have been worse. Here in Alberta we tend to measure summer in weeks instead of months so I'll be at it sooner rather than later!! Cheers. -grant
Really, do you relly need to do all those changes/repairs as it looks fine to me and if anything glue the scenery back on the rocks, paint the overhead, and it appears the train runs fine over the track. All looks great to me.
The track is fine for a MOW train but the kink is noticeable when longer cars pass through. It will be better when the changes are made I promise!! I appreciate your input. Cheers. -grant
Haha... There would be too much swearing! I think this place was designed and built by monkeys. It's no longer a re-modelling project but more of a rebuild. I'll show you guys what I'm up to one of these days soon.
You'd think builders would have figured out something to prevent something like that from happening. Maybe, something like the catch pan under the washer with a drain, so it wouldn't overflow that and prevent an ecological disaster. At any rate Grant, chalk one up to another Life experience! Cheers 🍻 and Happy Trails!

Good day friend, hows everything going with the layout????? Any up coming videos it has been a few months since last update, can't wait to see what is to come!!!!!
Been a busy summer V. Hoping to get into the basement in the next few weeks. I'll post an update vid for channel members on what I've been up to over the summer soon.
Ok honestly I was expecting more visible damage. But on the other side, who knows what lies beneath the scenery... 😐 Fortunately you use 3/4 plywood if my memory serves me well so this is sturdy. MDF likes to sucks water in, expands, and then it's done... Is the kink inside or outside the curve ? Can't really tell from the angle in the vid. Seems like the glue didn't survive the soak... Have a great summer and take care Grant 😊😉
Track pulled inward on the curve. Shouldn't be any damage to the sub roadbed because of the plywood. I remember seeing someone using MDF as roadbed and cringed!! It will suck up water for sure.
Had a pipe break on the last layout so this is pretty minor in the big picture. Still a wee touch frustrating but will come out on the other side looking better. Cheers! -grant
Hey Grant. Do you have any Freight Cars painted in your road on your layout? I ask because I would like to paint some up for my layout as if they made it here from yours.
Most home road cars are patched and are in captive service. I do have cement cars that might make an appearance offline. I'll find a picture and send it your way.
Maybe someone can help me. I recently discovered this channel. The trackplan is in the November 21 issue. But unfortunately it is not available on their homepage. Not even the digital version. Greetings from Austria.
I'm going to try to get a track plan into the next layout tour. The one in RMC is now out of date anyway. The whole west end of the layout has changed since the article was published. Cheers. -grant
