  • Since "Oppenheimer," has hit theaters, I thought it appropriate to show off Noodler's Ink, "Manhattan Project fountain pen ink. "Dark Matter" is my favorite, and most used fountain pen ink. It is a menacing black that can fade out to gray. It is Forge Resistant, and Water Resistant. This ink was based off the formula Oppenheimer, would have used during The Manhattan Project, at Los Alamos, and is one of Noodler's "Vintage" inks.
    I used: Onion Skin Paper, Tomoe River Paper, Kilk Camera Laterna Fountain Pen, & Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pen.

    It's a bit of a dubious honor, I suppose, but both of my paternal grandparents worked on the Manhattan project in Los Alamos, my grandfather (James K. Gore) was a chemist and grandma was a mathematician, and consequently, they were neighbors and friendly with (though I don't know how close) Oppenheimer. My father was born on the base in Los Alamos while it was still a secret location, so his birth certificate was falsified to show another city. Anyway, I haven't seen the new movie yet, but it's on my list. I do own the ink, though, and it's a good one!

      Then you will love the fact that the owner of Noodlers ink is antisemitic and had a label showing a jew with devil horns (similar to what the nazis published in the 30's before killing 6 million jews) on one side and a helicopter (the method south amerian dictators used to kill their enemies) on the other. He had previously had a similar image on a bottle of ink involving jews and devils horns too. Then the owner made a half assed apology, said he didn't realize it was an antisemitic image (despite bragging about how well versed in history and how deeply he researches his label designs) and basically lied through his teeth when he realized people weren't happy. Anyway, it was great ink for drawing swastikas. Enjoy!

      His birth certificate was NOT falsified. Birth certificates at Los Alamos carried the post office box number of the University of California office in Santa Fe, NM. All of the mail to and from Los Alamos went through Santa Fe and that was the official address.

    Have you read Truman, David McCullough’s biography of the president? He discusses Truman’s decision to use the atomic weapons after George Marshall estimated a million US casualties if the US invaded Japan. A million Japanese deaths were also estimated. Truman never second guessed his decision.

    This ink was reverse engineered from an original bottle of the ink that was delivered by Sheaffer to be used by the Manhattan Project and had elements in the ink that could be traceable by the FBI if information was leaked from the base as this was the only ink allowed on base….

    In the same vein, and got a bottle of Dark Matter to experience Oppenheimer in my pens. Went with the Monteverde Ritma Carbon Fiber, as nuclear containment uses graphite rods, pairs well with black inks.

    This ink was developed for document verification (security measure) Noodler’s uses the original formulation with the blessings of the DOE. Arguably one of the rarest inks. It was only used for a short period of time at Los Alamos,the most secretive weapons project to end the war- every signature on the documents that led to the next step toward mankind splitting an atom. I geeked all the way out. Been using it almost exclusively for about 5 years now.

    Hi Logan, I have recently discovered your channel and really like your videos. Quick question: over the years, nibmeisters and others have commented that Noodler's inks can be harmful to fountain pens. I am discovering that you like Noodler's inks, and black inks especially. Do you ever worry that Noodler's inks harm your pens? Do you do anything special to ensure your pens stay unaffected by Noodler's inks? Thanks for considering.

    • @curatedavalon
      @curatedavalon  Год назад +2

      I haven't had an issue yet. As far as making my peace with potential issues over time; I use the inks I love the most because they make me happy and productive. I adore my pens and would love to keep them in collector shape but they are my tools first and foremost. The pens I use the most often never have ink sitting in them for long without getting a rinse every week or so. Hopefully, I won't have an issue, but I do love Noodler's Ink and it's worth it to me to use them. I actually had a large object fall on my Vanishing Point Fountain Pen the other day and dent the outside. You just never know what might happen but I hope my inks won't be the first issue.

      There was one particular nibmeister who was on that crusade, barry. I don't believe that it is a general consensus, though I may be wrong. On the fountain pen subreddit a user did tests with vintage rubber-bulb pens over the course of a year and was not able to identify any issues.

    • @ronwoch
      @ronwoch Год назад +1

      Heart of Darkness is more similar to regular Noodler's Black than to Dark Matter. Dark Matter, for me, definitely has a noticeable gray tone to it once it dries.

    • @curatedavalon
      @curatedavalon  Год назад +5

      I have! It is a nice black with brown tones instead of the gray like in Dark Matter. I use white paper, so I think that is why I prefer blue/gray tones. If I were using cream paper I would definitely want to lean to a more brown/black.

    I don't know how your video popped up on my feed, but I am glad it did. This looks like a nice ink! How is the dry time using the Vanishing Point? I really like several of Noodler's Ink colors, but ran into a bit of bad luck with them. Several inks I purchased never seemed to completely dry, smudging on the paper even 24 hours later. If you have any suggestions about how to deal with this, I'd be grateful for some advice. Noodler's Zhivago was my absolute favorite.

    • @curatedavalon
      @curatedavalon  Год назад +1

      I ADORE Zhivago! Dark Matter is one of the quickest drying black inks I've used. In the Vanishing Point it really matters what paper I'm using as to the drying time. Moleskine paper absorbs and spreads so it's pretty instant. Tomoe River is pretty quick and Onion Skin paper takes a second. Drying time on this ink hasn't been an issue for me.

      I haven't had an issue with them being dry. The inks have been wet and write well for me. For whatever reason I love writing with these inks. The only pens I've had an issue with ink being too dry/drying out have been Lamy Al-Star or Safari pens. I've had Diamine, Noodler's Ink, and Ferris Wheel Press Ink all dry out in those pens. They have to be used more regularly in my experience.
