  • Sowing tomatoes is a simple activity, but necessary if we want to have tomatoes of a specific variety, which we will not get seedlings in stores. I personally prefer to sow rather than buy ready-made tomato seedlings. The selection of varieties in seeds is huge compared to what shops or garden centers have to offer. I always sow a little more than I need to then choose the prettiest seedlings and then tomato seedlings for further cultivation. The timing of sowing tomatoes is important. I sow the tomatoes in mid-February and put the boxes on the sunny windowsill. Sowing tomatoes too early will mean that in April you will have a forest of tomato bushes on the windowsill that will have to be propped up. Late sowing will delay the harvest. Seedlings quilt when they have min. 4 leaves and the plants become elongated. Leaves on a thin and long stem make the plants lie down over time and it is better to avoid contact of the leaves with a moist substrate.
