NASA Crashes Satellite Into Asteroid to Save Earth

- History was made when NASA successfully crashed a satellite into an asteroid. It sounds like a really bad mistake, but mission control has never been this excited to see a lost signal. DART was the first test of our ability to defend the Earth against an asteroid. A team at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory attempted to move an asteroid seven million miles away in hopes of being able to defend the planet in the future. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

Yea, it didnt. it was actually a satellite that hit an asteroid not to far away, to see if humanity can defend itself AGAINST asteroids in the future. The title seems a little like clickbait.

Finally something not so stressful
Never seen an asteroid with a rocky surface. Every picture I've seen in the passed looked smooth, unusual. 🧐 🤔
How does an asteroid hurtling towards earth, have its trajectory changed by a tiny, in comparison, satellite? Especially if it’s hurting towards earth at a rapid speed and also really heccin big?? Like since they only sent one for seven years into space to smack a space rock, how do we even know if the trajectory was changed? All we know is that they hit it.
Another question, how were they able to get signal from that far away? I can’t get a phone signal from 10 miles from a tower? How do they get HD pictures from thousands of miles in space? Serious question.
Magic.
They will know how much the trajectory changed by tracking its obit around the other asteroid. If the impact shifted the trajectory by 0.000001 m/s it could change the direction of the orbit by several thousand km over a long distance.
As for getting signal, there is not much to interfere with the signal between earth and the sattelite, and the sattelite has a MUCH bigger antenna than the cell phone. Your cell phone has a tiny little, weak antenna. And the signal is blocked by buildings trees, and anything else between it and the cell towers.
Thank you for your sacrifice, satellite! You will be missed! 🥹
