If they were to lie about a test, there’s no need to even notify the public. Amateur astronomers could easily decipher trajectory if NASA were to identify their “test” asteroid.
I’m willing to bet if the government had an confirmed collision, they’d notify the public to try and have as many people shelter as possible. Likely only after exhausting all attempts to change its course.

Imagine someone throws a rock at you right now and you can't move out of the way. Beside you, you have a drone with a tiny net on one side and a small pile of rocks on the other side.
It takes a lot less time, physical effort and mental calculations to pick up those rocks and try to smack the other rock out of the sky than it is to pilot the drone into the path of the rock and try to catch it with the net.
Both are extremely hard to do, but you stand a bit of a better chance by just throwing stuff at it.

What I am genuinely asking is... the long arduos journey and time it takes to build one, all the resources and funds spent to build one...just to crash into it without knowing immediately whether it was successful or not...is scary. There Is a waiting interval that must occur before they can even gather the data to say whether or not the impact was strong enough for the asteroid to be veered off course. God forbid we need this immediately or our planet will be doomed as a result of not getting vital information promptly.

This is perhaps NASA's most important and least appreciated mission. Deflecting asteroids isn't the stuff of science fiction any more and will likely prove critical to our future survival as a species. My one question though is, will anyone notice? And by anyone, I'm not limiting my self to any specific species.
