  • What is it like to be an autistic woman who has not been diagnosed as autistic? Comedian Fern Brady spent years being misdiagnosed, self-harming and self-medicating until a doctor finally told her she was autistic. Something she had told her GP 20 years earlier and been told she couldn’t be because she had had a boyfriend and could make eye contact. We now know that autism presents very differently in different people but particularly women. This book has trigger warnings at the bottom of this description box!

Adding this to my list. Love her comedy and have seen several interviews with her on the topic of her autism.

She writes about it so well - it’s really enlightening on how autism presents in girls and women

Brilliant coincidence that we have both uploaded a review of this today. Such a good book. She writes really well.

This is a book that I need to read! Terrific review. I have been reading more and more recently about young women being diagnosed with autism as adults. Jack, I also wanted to tell you that I have tagged you on a short video that I posted earlier this week on a poem about teaching: "Did I Miss Anything?" by Tom Wayman. I tagged in the notes a bunch of book tubers who are or were teachers. (I'm a recently retired English teacher.) I just wanted to call your attention to it as I think you will appreciate the sentiments expressed. 😊

Hi Pat! I loved this book and I’m sure it’s becoming a more common issue these days as we understand more about autism in women, so may strike a chord with people! I loved the poem video - thank you for tagging me! 😁

I read it as soon as it came out, I’m Scottish and autistic so I really identified with it. I listen to most of it on audio but I had to switch to the ebook because I was so angry at the way she was treated by doctors, for some reason I don’t get quite as irate when I’m just reading.

The doctors, particularly when she was young, were appalling!

I think it was part of the booktube prize octofinals- don’t know if it made it into the quarterfinals though. (I haven’t paid very close attention 😑)

I also haven’t paid close attention to that prize this year - I hope it did make it through as it was great!
