    Spent 15 months at Lajes Field mid Atlantic fuel stop as night shift NCOIC beginning Oct.3, 1991. Video brings back good memories... Concerning the C-17, I had the privilege of being final marshaler of the team that recovered the first two aircraft in the Air Force inventory at Charleston AFB in '93. Flew space - A on them several times after retiring... Superb heavy airlifter... Smooth, fast, & strong....even if they weren't built by Lockheed!!! 😊

    I'm an engine mechanic for C-17's in the USAF. They're quite a fun plane to work on, very well built! Glad you finally got to see one!

      chapsy1983:
      You say a "very well built" plane?My cousin was one of the Production Managers in Long Beach....it's well known in Aviation circles its Wing structure is very weak and prone to cracking like the C5s.....which is why a rigorous inspection is required and (what would be considered)"routine" flying-envelope maneuvers are strictly prohibited....the end-result; loss of hull and anything on board.
      Anyone but a complete idiot know the Russians with their Antonovs make better Wing-Over/Heavy-Lift Military Transport...which is why even our own US Military contracts them along with the 747 Freighters when serious work is needed.

    • @2ndNature

      Great aircraft to work on. Way better than the c-5s

      @@dmcnamara9859 Aren't there like 2 an124's and 1 225 and didn't the C-5's wing cracks get fixed with new wings.
      I don't think there are enough of any of those high wing heavy lift Russia Stronk aircraft you're talking about to make the US change its mind about not using them nvm that the 124 and 225's do civilian contract work not military at least for the US.
      I don't think the wing cracks are as much of a problem seeing that the flight envelope of the C-17 seems to extend well beyond the scope of the aircraft that are it's size unless you (Mr pilot who was debating with an actual maintainer of an aircraft like you built the thing yourself) have a source for that😉.

      @@koc988 :
      Putin's folks got the go-ahead to make more Antonov 124s a couple of years ago. The demand for them as Heavy-Lift Transport for Commercial enterprise never seems to end. Even the US Military contracts the Russians to fly their stuff around, because;not even the C5A,C-17 can do the stuff AN-124s can do around the clock.
      Russian don't use full- length spars, the outer-ends are bolted on to deal with eventual cracking which all Wing-Over fuselage Heavy-Lift aircraft suffer from.....Russians just unbolt the outer-spars and replace with new Ones.....C5A, C17.....grinding and patch panels are the fix. The Russian Heavy-Lift aircraft have much stronger(yet more flexible) Wing-Boxes and Rib Supports to transfer the load onto the lower airframe than do our USA Heavy-Lift stuff.
      US Miltary also contracts the Russian Mi-26 to fetch downed aircraft,etc......Mi-26 holds the world record for helicopters....not even the Erickson-Sokorski heavy-lift helicopter can come close to the capabilites of the Mi-26

    The C-17 is from McChord in Lakewood WA. I live a couple miles from the base and see them every day. Before the C-17 the base had the C-141 and before that the C-124. They also had the A-10's, F-15's, C130's and the F-106. My father was a pilot flying the C-124 and the C-141.
    That plane can take off in 3,500' and can back up.
    Nice video!

    Awesome bird to fly on. Was my ride from Ramstein, Germany to Tazar, Hungary back in early 1996 in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. Was carrying two 5-ton trucks with trailers, 2 or 4 HUMMWV's with trailers (I can't recall), and two more basick Hummers on the rear gate. 15 or 20 of us in jump seats. Very fast rotation, smooth flight, quickly dismount upon arrival in Tasar. Plane was back in the air in less than 10 minutes.

    C-17 pilots please weigh in! In my USAF days in the C-141 we taxied out with the flaps set for takeoff. At Delta once the push-back crew salutes you for taxi the first thing you do is set the flaps to a takeoff position. Even if you're expecting an updated load sheet during taxi out (which might change the flap setting) the flaps are at the expected take off setting. It's a serious deviation to have a TOFU (taxi out flaps up). The only exception is for contaminated taxiways- slush, wet snow and super-cooled standing water which could foul the flaps and the flap wells.

    • @c17nav
      @c17nav 5 лет назад

      The flaps are kept retracted until after the Electronic Flight Control System (EFCS) is reset in the lineup check to clear resettable faults, if any (some may be transitory).

    From billion dollar boondoggle to one of the greatest planes in the sky, I love the C-17 Globemaster. My brother worked on the Globemaster III with Boeing in Long Beach CA some years ago. It's amazing to see one fly in person. It took awhile to get this aircraft right but it was worth the wait and the money. Just one more reason why you don't mess with the US.

    • @keithfreitas2983

    • @loumac2955
      @loumac2955 4 года назад

      h did call it MD C-17 Globemaster. I know it took a lot of years and budget overruns to get it in the air. Hard to believe that it was once considered a billion dollar boondoggle. It was definitely all worth it. Hopefully, Boeing gets through all that's going on right now, my brother told me that the company is offering buyouts to many of it's employees. I agree with President Trump that a healthy Boeing is essential to a healthy US economy, best of luck!
