The music totally encapsulates the vibe I got when watching this movie for the first time. Every character is just so emotionally shallow and detached in their interactions. No one tries to get to know Patrick or even show an ounce of sincere concern for him. His fiancee, Evelyn, clearly is only with him for status which is deliberately shown when she faked crying when they breakup, followed by her look of frustration that she couldn’t manipulate him to stay with her. His friends clearly don’t care about him enough to talk to him beyond a surface level. Of course Patrick isn’t immune to this emotionally numbness and therefore becomes a psycho himself. The whole movie felt like watching a bunch of sociopaths interacting and it really nailed the message that Patrick is a product of the materialistic and self-centered society he lives in. Patrick is a tragic character who reminds us of the importance of preserving our morality and maintaining a keen understanding that we must protect what we value doing most in life. Because without these qualities, we too will eventually end up like Mr. Bateman: An empty entity, something illusory, which simply is not there
