They're not translations, they're pun names. Nappa is Napa Radish if I recall. Bardock is Burdock, Gine is Ginger, Paragus is Asparagus, Broly is Broccoli, Brussel and Sprout are Brussels Sprout.

The monkey thing is actually chosen for a reason. Goku, in the original DB, was loosely based on Sung Woo Kong. He had his flying cloud, the power pole which could change sizes, and he was a shape shifting monkey. However, in DBZ all of those thing get abandoned as Akira Toriyama decided he wanted to take the story in a new direction so this fight here with Vegeta is his way of closing off that thread once and for all without retcons
Fun fact for people who never saw DragonBall. Goku actually DID hit his head as a baby, which made him forget the few Saiyen memories he had. This caused him to become alot nicer, whereas before he was determined to destroy stuff. The only reason he didn't destroy the world during his first full moon is his adopted grandfather Gohan (who agoku named his son after) was a good enough martial artist to beat him as a giant monkey. At least until Goku got old enough to understand, "Never look at the full moon."
Goku's backstory being retconned from "you were sent to earth to take it over as a baby but hit your head and forgot" to "your dad sent you to some nowhere planet because he was sure frieza was about to destroy your planet and he wanted to save something for once instead of destroying" is weird to me cause like, both are good, but why retcon it?
i think it makes more sense to give goku the superman treatment than to have it be normalized that sayans are sending their untrained infants to war without any kind of supervision.

it's really something to watch Boom being mind blown by the insanity of the lore while the others are like "oh yeah that's just part of the series, it's normal". it really put things into perspective, because anyone that has grown up with dragon ball probably doesn't realize how absurd these concepts really are from how ingrained they become.

Yajirobe is not THAT weak, he still had a strong enough strike to cut a 180'000 power level tail after all...but yeah he just caught Vegeta by surprise and he's by far the weakest. Maybe he could take a Saibaiman but I doubt it.

OK, as a 80 kid let me tell you, there was no DBZ filler, well not for me, it was more the American TV station only had the episodes where Vegetta and Nappa were coming to the Earth, and they would replay it over and over because they didn't have any more episodes for America after that, I watch the series about 5 or 6 times before they got new ones in the US. Soo for me not so much filler as repeats over and over, I never thought they'd make it.

I'd like to think that the Saiyan race was forced into genetic and psychological manipulation from the womb or during incubation and under Frieza's influence to enact the tyrant's galactic domination plans. Also, planet Vegeta may not have had an earth like moon to trigger the great ape transformation gene, perhaps the transformation was only discovered when Freiza showed up and had his goons experiment on an unwilling population. Freiza used the threat of annihilation and the Saiyan's great ape transmission to cover more ground in his conquest.
I'm so glad that they enjoyed this series from the first episode alone. 😅 TFS was truly a pioneer of it's time. They were so good that people are instantly hook even after over a decade sunce they started. 😂

The reason gohan stops growing his tail back along with vegeta and other saiyans is because toriyama hated drawing tails so he sort of took it out of the story over time.
Fun fact: the german voice actor of spongebob is also the first german voice of vegeta in the saiyan saga. Once they went to nake he got a diffrent voice for the better. But just imagine u watch some epic dbz but then the main villain sounds like someone who us befriended to a sea star and making krabby patties
It is kind of stupid how they don't correct misconceptions the upper right guy gets. Like everyone doesn't fly, especially at start. And ya know, reasons why Goku was doing stuff on Kai's planet such as gravity and training and stuff. Or how stupidly hard it would be to get the dragon balls without bulma's genius. They just talk about her being rich. Also they just continue the meme joke of Krillin being not respected, not actual to the shows reality. Or how they imply the super fast cuts to ppl losing or dying isnt an exageration. Or the badmouthing of Goku not caring about his child. The guy is dead and training to stop the aliens from killing all of Earth including his family. Its not like he could have done anything for or to interact with Gohan during all this. ANYONE that has properly watched DBZ respects Krillin. He might be weak copared to... most threats, but through pure hard work, dedication and talent, he landed the biggest baddie in the entire series. Oh also, he is BY FAR the strongest of his entire race.

Piccolo to this day refers to him by his family name (in the sub, dub changed it because Japanese and English are like opposite languages)

The reason gohan stops growing his tail back along with vegeta and other saiyans is because toriyama hated drawing tails so he sort of took it out of the story over time.

Fun fact: the german voice actor of spongebob is also the first german voice of vegeta in the saiyan saga. Once they went to nake he got a diffrent voice for the better. But just imagine u watch some epic dbz but then the main villain sounds like someone who us befriended to a sea star and making krabby patties

It is kind of stupid how they don't correct misconceptions the upper right guy gets. Like everyone doesn't fly, especially at start. And ya know, reasons why Goku was doing stuff on Kai's planet such as gravity and training and stuff. Or how stupidly hard it would be to get the dragon balls without bulma's genius. They just talk about her being rich.
Also they just continue the meme joke of Krillin being not respected, not actual to the shows reality. Or how they imply the super fast cuts to ppl losing or dying isnt an exageration.
Or the badmouthing of Goku not caring about his child. The guy is dead and training to stop the aliens from killing all of Earth including his family. Its not like he could have done anything for or to interact with Gohan during all this. They aren't acknowledging that everything is overly exagerated, acting like everything shown here is accurate. There is tons of hints of these character traits in the show, but the abridged dials them to 11, and they are letting that guy think that is how it actually is.

ANYONE that has properly watched DBZ respects Krillin. He might be weak copared to... most threats, but through pure hard work, dedication and talent, he landed the biggest baddie in the entire series. Oh also, he is BY FAR the strongest of his entire race.

Dragon Ball was initially based on Journey to the West, Goku specifically being based on Sun Wukong, who was a monkey. Son Goku is the translation into Japanese. Hence, giant monkey. OSP has a series recapping it going on if you ever want to check it out.
