This is a true Story! It happened to me. I was a third mate on a ship called Cape Franklin bound for Murmansk to load Iron ore. Murmansk is well within the Arctic Circle and it's still rather cold even at the height of Summer though you still get hot days as well. As our ship was travelling north towards Noord Cap at the northern-most tip of Norway, naturally the days were getting longer and the nights were getting shorter. We had a new crew onboard who were all Somalis, straight out of Somalia. Only a few of them spoke English but they were a very willing work group though poorly educated and none of them had ever been inside the Arctic circle. Anyway, the ship's engineer used to phone me each night to ask what time sunset was and of course I would give him the time of Astronomical Sunset. Naturally I got curious and asked what this was all about so he quietly revealed that it was Ramadan and we had a haj aboard with a red beard. This guy was demanding that the rest of the crew obey the rules and wait until sunset before eating. He was a bit of a bully and a right pain in the arse. I learned all about this from my watchman named Jama, who was not at all devout and used to tease the bully unmercifully. Inevitably as we steamed further and further north we arrived at the day when the sun would not be setting. It simply passed along the northern horizon then started to rise again. Anyway, on that particular evening when I told the engineer that there would be no sunset the shit hit the fan amongst the muslim/Somali crew. At 0030 in the morning just after 'midnight' a deputation appeared the wheelhouse door demanding to know when sunset occurred. It was no use trying to explain that we were now so far north that the sun wouldn't set until we sailed south again. I just shrugged and told them there would be no sunset for at least three weeks until we left Murmansk and returned to Newcastle. Their reaction became first frightened and then hostile so I explained to them that they were welcome to leave one observer on the bridge of the ship to see if I was telling the truth. Having suggested this I then went off watch and the second mate took the watch. Naturally, the superstitious idiots accepted this idea and Mr Haj of the red beard decided to spend the rest of the night watching the sun slowly pass along the northern horizon. Eventually at eight o'clock he gave up. When I came back on watch at 8,a.m., Jama, my 'not-very-devout' muslim watchman offered to get me a bacon sandwich so I heartily agreed and he promptly slipped down to the galley to ask the cook for two large egg and bacon sandwiches. He returned with the delicious sandwiches and we stood on the starboard wing enjoying our sandwiches while Mr Haj (of - the- red - beard,) eventually gave up and retreated down below. Because it was now 'sun-up' in every respect, he could not eat again until the evening so the idiot actually fasted for 48 hours. The captain eventually took him aside and told him the ships rule was six am to six pm but the man never got over it. To add insult to injury. When we got to Murmansk, the Russians would not accept roubles in the seaman's shop because it's only there to earn western money. Talk about testing his faith. Russia; where the sun didn't set and they didn't accept Russian money. He paid off voluntarily at the end of the voyage! Islamic ignorance; you couldn't make it up!

I think the purpose of fasting is to establish societal symmetry. In the sense that during Ramadan Zakat ,Lillahi ,fitrah ,saddaqah are often paid ie the wealth tax and other voluntary charity. Then during the 2nd Eid ,meat parcels are disbursed to poor and needy who can at least replenish their meat supplies for a fair few months. So just Ramadan/Eid and the 2nd Eid ie Eidul Adha would ensure that many needy people have money to survive and food for the 2nd half of the year.

You cant prove that there is alla( as per your belief and described in Quran) and atheist cant prove that there no god or allha. Yes defiantly there must be some power/ powers who is/are running the universe. But defiantly not the same as described in any religion. simple logic is in nature have u ever seen any herd in animals which have two leasders or any kingdom which have two kings.
its not necessary to call the creator ALLAH if u just say there is only one GOD u r half muslim.

its the only book which has 77340 words and these words can be memorized in perfect sequence by millions of people which do not even speak arabic.
no other book has this miracle.
if a group of people try to rember an essay of 1000 words still they cant do that perfectly.
QURAN challanges the whole human kind in 2:23 that if u have doubts about QURAN then write a chapter like QURAN from 1400 years many tried but no one can write even a verse like QURAN.
QURAN has no imoral verses as most of other religious books have
no errors no contradictions and QURAN has verses which have such scientific information which is impossible for illitreate person Muhammad (p.b.u.h) to know there is no one arround him who can tell him that except the creator.
and most of all QURAN gives a very good way to live life

If you were to live in Venezuela for a month, you would definitely lose weight. the exception is perhaps if you have friends in government. it is difficult to find food in a grocery store in Venezuela and if you do it anyway it is Expensive due to hyperinflation and other things. The people of Venezuela will weigh much less today than they weighed before the empty food shelves

Hi bro I from Penang nothing like what you mentioned. Only Muslim shop is closed until 3pm. As non muslim we got non muslim shop to have our food .

I think the purpose of fasting is to establish societal symmetry.
In the sense that during Ramadan Zakat ,Lillahi ,fitrah ,saddaqah are often paid ie the wealth tax and other voluntary charity.
Then during the 2nd Eid ,meat parcels are disbursed to poor and needy who can at least replenish their meat supplies for a fair few months.
So just Ramadan/Eid and the 2nd Eid ie Eidul Adha would ensure that many needy people have money to survive and food for the 2nd half of the year.
If Islam was the true religion, there would be a social safety net to take care of the needy all year. Maybe there wouldn’t be any needy.
@Relevant Brother, what you have pointed out is the other stuff besides fasting during Ramadan. Fasting itself is just refraining from food and water. Allah could simply have left out fasting and kept everything else.
