This game really felt like a horror game up until Alpha 3. Once Alpha 4 came up, the game felt less like a horror game and just kind of like a puzzle game. And wow, never knew that this game was in development since 2014.
Yeah. The finished product is shite
Agree
Alpha 3 still sucked shit, just because it's night doesn't make it scary.
Alpha 2 is decent and should have just been slightly improved instead of, yknow
Alpha 1 is so good and I wish it was built upon
@@QUBIQUBED You do have a point. The Neighbor's AI in Alpha 3 was still mostly advanced. Once Alpha 4 came out, and its successors, the Neighbor became very easy to avoid which really didn't make it feel much like a challenge trying to avoid him.
Is just a fact they make the art to Cartoony
Kind of incredible that a game that went through so many different builds, each one looking rather promising, ended up becoming a broken, messy designed disaster that somehow ended up making 5 other games and a show!
Don’t forget the book series 😂
5 games?!!! The only games I know are Hello neighbor, Hello neighbor 2, and secret neighbor
@@No_king1143 and hide and seek
@@JamesDora234 the books are necessary for the story
The graphics are really bad.
I don't know why, but personally, my favorite version of the game is Pre-Alpha. This is the first version I've met. This version itself is not so complicated like new ones, Neighbour's house looks realistic and the atmosphere just perfect.
What about protoype imo it's the best that's what pre alpha and alpha 1 builded on
My Favorites in Order:
1. Alpha 1
2. Prototype
3. Pre-Alpha
4. Alpha 2
We'll pretend the others don't exist.
Very Early
Early Prototyoe

My favorite hello neighbor games
Alpha 2

Remember when the neighbour had a normal house, a normal adaptive ai, and doesn’t just stand there when you’re staring at him?
yea, the good ol days, when the game was actually fun and functional
And actually good graphics
Well, he never had a normal house but yeah I agree with the other stuff
@@redguy2lads479 true, who the hell has a coffin in their house anyway??

Let's admit it : animations in pre-early stage are better than any other versions of Hello Neighbor.
Yes

@PixelBK no they weren't
@@sophiaganesh4666 it’s ok
I think alpha 1 is peak and pre-early is a second, but yeah, everything went wrong at alpha 3 and arguably alpha 2
There are 4 elements that, in my opinion, made the earlier versions scarier[Prototype - Alpha 2].
1. The Atmosphere - It had a more realistic art style and was sending a message to the viewer that it is a horror game. The ambience and the emptiness really sells the game and gives off a vibe similar to liminal spaces.
2. The Claustrophobia - The tight hallways and the house being relatively smaller in scale is what made it scarier since you could run to the neighbor at any moment. Not to mention that screwing up when being chased will end up in you getting caught.
3. The AI - Yes, the AI was so much better back then. The neighbor wasn't an annoyance and actually made sure that you wouldn't repeat the same tactics. Now, you can just abuse the bugs and even disable the traps that the neighbor sets up.
4. The Blank Face - The neighbor's emotionless face makes him creepier in my opinion. It makes him look inhuman, as if he really is a psychopath hiding something. Now, with the emotions it's like he's just some normal guy who is annoyed with you repeatedly trespassing his property.
@Kitelonga i played the pre-alpha and alpha 1. the games before alpha 3 were so much more psychological. you're at a constant tension and don't want to get caught cuz its so sinister. the other games, being caught is just annoying and you barely even have to worry about it when you get to certain levels, making it boring. in alpha 4 it was just like a puzzle game, palatable to all audiences, but playing it was just fustrating.
@@ssf1470 agree
my evolution will be even more interesting :)
oh yeah also in pre alpha if the neighbor thought you were inside or was suspicious he could go outside,go to a window then jump to see if you are inside. (he still can do it in pre alpha btw)
@@MaxwellE985 they should rename hello neighbor to "entering and breaking simulator" lmao
I haven't noticed until now about how amazing the game was back then, feels like actually running for your life against a nightmare that is chasing you..
Remember when this game had potential to be exponentially terrifying? Yeah me too...
They should have kept the prototype-alpha 2 artstyle.
@@Cosmicmorales That’s exactly what I think. They should’ve also just kept the original basement idea as well because it was a lot scarier than what we were provided with.

@@specialevolution619 shut up
hello neighbor 2 is good
I will never forget alpha 1 and alpha 2, those were the best versions of the game EVER, it got so much worse after
What do you mean? Graphics wise or just the AI? Cuz the AI was a lot better in the older games
@@mr.killjoy4753 I'm talking about just overall gameplay, story, and scares. I'm not talking about alpha 4, the latest version, I'm talking about the one with the cutscene, the one where everything didn't look so wonky.
@@kitelonga8408 if I’m gonna be honest, I can agree with that, they should add a feature that’s changes the textures to alpha 1 textures, sure that may be really hard to code but it would honestly be better
Umm i like full game and hello neighbor 2 full game
@@mr.killjoy4753 The latest version with the house being like 50 stories high and having to jump with an umbrella just isn't scary anymore. The lore is stupid and isn't as cool anymore. I remember when the game first got hype, it was the one with just a few rooms down stairs, a room with a remote shark at the top floor, and just trying to get into the basement, THATS WHEN IT WAS SO GOOD. but then it has this whole plot with the neighbor and some random shadow kids we don't care about.
search up 8bit ryan's or (maybe idk) markipliers videos when the game had come out, it was amazing.
Prototype is my favourite with the design and graphics and the fact instead of the glass breaking when you throw a tomato it would actually be realistic and squish.
The tomato getting squashed on a window is a feature in pre alpha and alpha 1
@@Tenzlaand HNOS :)
... that first version is one of the most frightening things, despite the graphics. Huge
Hello Neighbor is honestly one of those games that had no idea what it was doing.
It's development changeed so much, and it's core gameplay never remained the same. I think this is why it became disliked, the final product was literally a puzzle game, not even a horror game. While the first version, the neighbor was actually intimidating. Also, i don't think the first build was real, it seemed like an animation. the "Live development" thing doesn't make sense. Why is the quality so different in every other build? It's almost like they were releasing old builds instead of actual up to date builds.
It was also disliked because in act 1 the neighbor can glitched inside of the red key room without the red key
The first build is a animation from what the game was supposed to be, of course it looks way better from what we have currently
They should of sticked with alpha 1 and built on that
Hello neighbour 2 gives me hope for HN so far there’s only some little things that have gone wrong and now the neighbour can actually scare you to death tho that ai makes him so easy to avoid he actually is scary
@@sackbanana9746 yeah
The 2014 one is just horrifyingly eerie, the way it looks the music the absolute blinding whiteness. It feels so incredibly lonely
Yea
Early prototype plays relaxing music while the player is running for his life
It's honestly sad, how the earliest version of Hello Neighbour basically a Pre-Alpha, not even fully textured or animated yet, has better neighbour AI mechanic's than the newer versions. The fact that you could set up traps, push drawers in-front of doors and all of that to try and keep the Neighbour out as long as possible, was honestly much better than what we received in the full game. It's such a shame how they focused on lighting and the neighbours house, more than the neighbours AI mechanics.
I loved the vibe around the prototype so much more it just seemed so much scarier and the whole style more than the super cartoony one they chose.

I'm sorry, but the *Prototype will always be my favorite.* This was the game at it's scariest imo. The compact house and lighting not only made it scary, but more challenging. Add that along with the sound design and you have something special. I mean just listen to the footsteps at6:50when you're found. It let's you know that you're in danger even when the music isn't playing!
Wish the prototype was the full game, there's always custom maps, I recommend old artstyle mod, it's in the hello mod kit
the music only playing AFTER you see him, and the footsteps playing beforehand is such a good way to make horror. this was by far the best

can we just talk about the very early gameplay for a sec? that was so cool and would genuinely be so scary, the way he barges in through the window when you lock the door, and also the way the player can move things around like that? itd be so much more scarier if it was finished and textured. i hope someone remakes it.
oh yeah, and also the mechanics for the neighbour, he was actually smart and did things to stop you, while i think pre-alpha, prototype, and alpha 1 and 2 were scary, this wouldve topped it. he closes the door, blocks entrance ways, ect. he was actually realistic, this would make the most sense for a horror game.

I liked everything through alpha 2. The pre-alpha was a bit of a disjointed mess when it came to puzzle solving, but showed off the then impressive AI for the house design. Alpha 1 expanded on the house and puzzle solving, creating a large, but still believable exterior, but a world of fun and wonder inside, especially the unknown in the basement. Alpha 2 had a story expansion, and while gameplay wise, this is where things began to take a turn for the worse, the lore admittedly had me intrigued, and I liked the much more realistic approach to the house. Everything after that was just too unrealistic for me to a point where it just wasn't as enjoyable, especially with all the bugs and poor gameplay.

I love how the very early development of hello neighbor came in 2014, along with fnaf
Alpha 2 was the best, it was nice and simple and it really was just seeing what was up in your neighbor's house. Not find out what's going on in your neighbor's thousand feet high atrocity.
No alpha 2 is the worst build
Alpha 1.5 better
The game looked really nice until alpha 3. The pre-alpha, alpha and alpha 2 had good animations and 3D models. Then suddenly alpha 3 was a glitchy mess with weird animations.
There was also alpha 1.5 where you can explore the secret basement room from alpha 2
I wish the first real prototype was still playable today! Even though it didn’t feel like a horror game after alpha 3 or 2 I still admire tiny builds work and the evolution of this game, this game inspired me to start game development. this game and the past alphas ARE always going to be great! Thanks for making this video and bringing back old memories!

bugs, and the non-existing horror
I share your opinion with you. I don't see this game as a horror either, for me it's just a puzzle with an enemy. I saw it in the very first versions.
The older versions were better for us older fans because it was actually tense and challenging.

The ["_PROTOTYPE_"] of the game is actually great it’s very scary like the footsteps of the neighbour is so scary and how fast he is the music the graphics and the lightning, sound effects and the AI how it runs wow.
Nice.
This game before alpha 3, had everything to be a great game, its suspense and terror was incredible in the pre alpha and alpha 1, all that was lost from alpha 2, what bothered me was the fact that I wanted to expand so much that there was behind the basement, although since alpha 1 it was already something fictional a door that had a kind of road behind, Not like in the Alpha 3 onwards what if you went in was in neighbor crying or after that a super battle against a giant neighbor.
The early gameplay is so terrifying with the loud noises and the neighbour
Это только добавляет отмосферы

Man, something about all the alphas just gives me a lot of nostalgia, I used to play alpha 4 all the time and eventually I actually beat it, it was the most fun hn game for me. The lore makes it so much better though when you know it.
Did 2014 even have a basement?
Tbh the full game should have been a finished pre alpha house with a finished basement. Would have been more scarier and make more since compared to the madness full game
Ik everyone keeps saying the early alphas were the best and more scary and I do think that but I also like the way they started to approach hello neighbor transforming it into their own style and story that when u see anything from the game you can say that’s hello neighbor! Not that I don’t love the early versions as they looked more realistic I think what they have now really boosted the games popularity and difference from any other games you’ll see. Also the grafics are becoming much better as they move onto hello neighbor sequels and prequels with better Ai and stuff that really show through pc and Xbox versions of the game :).
No man, the game has gone down in popularity. Alpha 2 was literally where the cartoony style started but it still managed to be scary. Now it isn't scary, puzzles are crap, story is crap, graphics look good tho. But still
but the thing is, you can make a cartoony style, a different style. Like little nightmares, and make it horrific. But they just, lost the horror on the way, the AI in the official release is absolute trash, and I hope they'll fix everything for HN2
what own style? it's just fnaf minigames but worse
Don't you have the slightest idea just how much bullshit you typed into this comment?
@@jelly_lori sadly they didn't
hello neighbor is a nice example of things you should never do in game devolopment
1. DONT CHANGE THE GAMEPLAY,
If your game is about stealth and horror KEEP IT like that, Dont try to fit in things like Platforming or puzzles inside it, because if you do, it will always end up breaking the gameplay core, (LIKE JUST LOOK AT THE ALPHA 1 FLOOR PLANS)
2. Dont change what people like about your game, if people like certain thing about your game, LEAVE IT LIKE THAT, if people like it theres no reason to change it unless you wanna fix something you dont like about it, (LIKE FOR EXAMPLE, DONT CHANGE THE ARTSTYLE DOCENS OF PEOPLE HAVE SAID THEY LIKED, IF YOU WANNA IMPROVE IT, BASE IT AROUND WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE)
3. if your Objective is to make players feel dread and fear, dont give them WEAPONS or ABILITIES to face off against the enemys it breaks the inmersion you are building, which will make people not take the game seriously anymore
4. make the game challenging by actually making a good AI, Not making it horribly tedious by adding nonsensical puzzles,
challenge should always be hard or easy depending on the players ability on how to go trought the obstacles, which is the whole point of the games AI,
5. BUILD UP YOUR STORY FROM WHAT YOU HAVE, If you already have a storyline in mind and you feel its not enough, DONT CHANGE IT, EXPAND ON IT, Changing storylines should only happen before or early in devolopment, never in mid or late devolopment, because if you do that you are basically redoing the game from the start and basically wasting time,
sigh, im kinda sad of what hello neighbor became,
it went from a humble fun cool indie stealth horror game,
to a corporative family friendly, childrens mystery game that doesnt take itself seriously anymore,
Most of the stuff i have said in this comment also apply to Hello Neighbor 2,
Which is simply sad,
I simply wish for a hello neighbor fangame that finally sticks out to the orginal ideas, and is fully made and polished,
most fangames that try to do this, are either Mediocre, or Dont stick out with the original ideas and visions, and end up being just inaccurate or nowhere as interesting,
I love how the neighbor just walks without using his legs in the very early version
Ngl the devgamm looks the most realistic and is really cool
Its cool to see how far this game has come
Yeah, went from a game that was interesting and creepy to a game that's for dumb kids who think they're cartoony excuse of a Hello Neighbor game is "scary".
Yeah, they've truly come far. Too far.
@@piner5231 a pretty shitty one if you ask almost everyone minus the kids
@@piner5231 bro what?, I wasn't even talking about your opinion tho💀
The fact that the prototype coming out before pre alpha has better graphics more mechanics better aptmosphere, better sound design and so much better animations than THE ACTUAL GAME shows how tragic this game is
Personally, I quite like the game that Hello Neighbor became. I personally do believe it went from a horror to a puzzle game, but I love the puzzle game that it turned out to be. The game certainly was buggy but they must've patched it because I went back and played this game just this year and I barely ever ran into a bug except for the occasional crash that happened during long play sessions, and even when the game did crash, the auto save function would prevent me from losing too much progress. The AI isn't half bad either, it's not pre-alpha levels of insane but it is certainly better than your traditional "chase the player" enemy you see in a lot of games. The Neighbor can set up bear traps and cameras and can notice things like flashlights and things that are askew in his house and become more aggressive as a result. The Neighbor has a routine where he does things that any human would do, like sleeping and using the restroom. Sure the earlier alphas had most of this stuff but that's the point, this is some really cool stuff that they didn't cut from the alphas and is still very present in the full game. I do know that they cut stuff, but the stuff they kept with the new stuff isn't even close to bad, I would dare say it's great. One thing I've noticed is that in a lot of reviews they point out how not scary it is, and no it's not scary and yes they should remove the part of the description where they say it's a horror game, but if you go into it expecting a puzzle game with the occasional little scare, then I think you'll have a pretty good time! It's not a horror game, but that doesn't mean it's not a good game.
Alpha 2 had less bugs then the full release of Hello neighbour
Thats a certified bruh moment
Alpha 2 is the worst build of hello neighbor
@@WRATH_69 clearly you havent seen Alpha 4 or 3
@@RedGoji i played all of hello neighbor builds and i enjoyd them all expect for alpha 2
@@WRATH_69 well what was so wrong about alpha 2 and how did you hate it more than Alpha 3?
@@RedGoji because its certainly too easy like you can speedrun alpha 2 in few seconds and because it is soo easy i hate for what it was and neighbor is too fast even tho hello neighbor were going for that neighbor would be slower than the player but alpha 2 ruined the atmosphere and art style
Hello neighbor alpha 1 and 2 really make me feel happy towards the animations, and be honest, hello neighbor 2 looks amazing.
Good Music/Song! BTW Go Do The Among Us Version Of The Stabbing Game!
The nostalgia is actually going to make me cry, I even forgot there was a shark pool
hello neighbor is just amazing! you always feel the sensation in your skin of being hunted by someone (in the case of the game, your neighbor). I say stealth because it has certain elements of it.
The horror of the game is not even mentioned, this game is simply great!
In the pre alpha the neighbor spent like 40 hours on the T. V.
the music at the beginning of alpha 3 is amazing
You forgot alpha 1.5, Early alpha 2. The alpha 2 house with the old textures and art style, and a basement that didn’t end when you got to the first door.
I missed when dashie played the alpha that was so much better than now
Not gonna lie but this actually wants me to go to sleep so badly cause it's so relaxing 3:15
Till 2014 to 2016 was scary and gave me chills I still remember the beauty
